“Bayou, Unexpectedly Delicious Food ... A Diamond in the Rough!”

New to DC, but luckily we discovered this local gem. Enjoyed another great meal at Bayou. It's not just authentic Cajun food like great Po Boys and Jumbalaya. Most everything on the menu is delish. The atmosphere is very casual and "bar" ish, so one doesn't expect the food to be so good! But it is. My personal dinner favorite is the Fish Out of Water - rare tuna, blackened on the outside, with a light wasabi cream sauce ... Delightful! The pork chop is thick juicy and grilled to perfection, served with collard greens. And, I can't forget to mention the fried chicken - crispy, juicy and very tasty. Chef Rusty's daily specials are a real treat. Look for his short rib ravioli and special smoked pork. We love the salads and can't resist the biscuits and sweet butter. Honestly, we've tried most everything on the menu and have not been disappointed. Even like the brunch ... And I' m not a big fan of Brunch - I mean, how much can one do with eggs! Bayou's " deconstructed" quiche was a nice surprise; the eggs were cooked slightly runny, as requested; and my son said the bacon tasted great and was cooked just right. For surprisingly good food and friendly service in the neighborhood. Lots of regulars, particularly at lunch, because it's consistently good and well-priced.

“Perfect for Lunch...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2014

We sat outside for a quick bite before returning to afternoon conference--each of the three of us had salads and iced tea served soon enough once we let the waitress know that we were speeding along! Agreeably delicious after savoring a bite from each other's plates.

“Who Woulda Thought?”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2014

We were visiting our niece in DC and she suggested a late lunch at Bayou on Penn. Cajun in DC? We walked down and when we entered it smelled and looked like a Cajun place. We had an order of fried tomatoes for an appetizer and I ordered the Catfish Po' Boy & a Abita Jockamo I.P.A, and yes, I know that I.P.A.s are supposed to be hoppy but I have yet to have this experience and the Abita was not at all hoppy. Everyone else ordered a salad. The Fried Green Tomatoes were great with a very nice sauce, I'd consider a double order with soup as a main course. The Po' Boy was very large and also very tasty, my niece was happy to take the other half for a later snack. The others enjoyed their salads but who in the hell orders a salad in a Cajun place?

Give this place a try and if you don't know what something is, try it. BUT don't settle for a salad!

“a really lively and loud place with extraordinary menu entries”

the portions in this place are quite big, as most US restaurants. the service was efficient and I would say it offers interesting southern style dishes, with items like alligator soup
