My family and I decided to spend a day in Washington on our road trip back to Canada from our summer vacation in SC. I'm a frequent guest and have grown quite loyal to the Fairmont group of hotels and was excited about our first visit to the capital. The service we received was "world class" from the bell desk, to reception, concierge, and all the staff in the Juniper restaurant on-site. The location was central with access to the popular sites as well as the local fare (its also near the G.W. University). We had such a great time visiting the sites and attractions that we plan to return to Washington for several days next year - there is so much to see!

We booked and paid for the Fairmont in advance to get a good rate. On checking in, the reception was exceptional - we were upgraded and given an extra bed for our son (only hotel in U.S that did this tour), and the Fairmont continued to excel throughout on all counts. For the fitness inclined there is an option to use either the Fairmonts own gym (free) or an extensive heath club for only $10. The hotels location is very good (for Georgetown in the evening, but even for the usual sights)

I generally choose hotels depending on whether or not they have a pool. This hotel advertised that they have a pool, but they really don't. What they have is a for-pay health club, a very nice health club but the health club runs the pool.

I paid the price because I wanted a workout. Got a good workout, and tool advantage of the hot tub and the steam room. But when I left, the hours had switched to the members lap-pool time. I saw a woman trying to get her daughter in for one last swim, and the manager was basically saying that if there were any members swimming laps, the she was out of luck. In his words "WE are not a hotel, we are a health club".

Really? If that is the case, then why does the hotel web site list that they have a pool? I don't think just because they house a private health club, and the health club has a pool, that the hotel should be saying they have a pool -- particularly when you have to pay extra, and they treat guests as a lower life form.

Again, this is a good hotel, but it is not a great hotel.

Room Tip: We chose a king suite. Furthest room from the elevator.

Wcrosby, thank you very much for your feedback. It is extremely valuable. As you probably know, eyes that see the same sight too frequently can sometimes become blind to what is right in front of them. We have undergone extensive renovations and made changes to our fitness center and gym this year. You are absolutely correct—Balance Gym owns the pool and we are fortunate to have them on-site. Thanks to your note, we have gone through our website and made the revisions anywhere that could be misleading. If you see anywhere that could be improved, please contact Keely Carney, our Internet Marketing Manager, at keely.carney@fairmont.com. She will see to any revisions immediately.

Thank you again for the valuable information!

Exemplary service at the Fairmont Washington, DC made us feel as though we were the most important guests staying at this lovely and well-located property. From the warm welcome at reception to the kind greeting at breakfast every morning, we were made to feel special. On more than one occasion, even the housekeeping staff stopped to smile and ask how our day was going. Among the many helpful, friendly faces, our bellman Adem, and concierge Rob, far exceeded expectations.

After delivering bags to our room, Adem called us by name each time he saw us, and told colleagues we were celebrating a wedding anniversary. Rob made helpful dinner recommendations and reservations and patiently answered our many questions ranging from public transportation options to how best to navigate the Smithsonian museums. He also arranged for an anniversary remembrance and personal note that were delivered to our room.

Based on previous positive experiences at Fairmont hotels in Canada, we transferred here from another well-regarded 4 star hotel in town where my husband had business for a couple of days. Since we only choose to review places that really stand out, the other hotel will go unnamed. If you prefer a genuinely memorable experience to something that is adequate but rather generic and in the same price category, look no further than the Fairmont, DC.

We stayed on the bed and breakfast package, which we highly recommend. The beautiful buffet included full American hot breakfast items as well as European style meats, cheeses and olives. Fresh fruit and French style pastries and breads were plentiful and delicious. The atrium and garden areas are lovely, and we enjoyed dining outside in this oasis within the city.

Tips: Trader Joe’s is within a couple of blocks and Foggy Bottom Metro station is 3-4 blocks away. The metro card saves time and money when using public transportation.
Georgetown is a short walk from the hotel and has many great dining options. We enjoyed Filomena and especially La Chaumiere.

The Fairmont Georgetown is a nice hotel in a very nice location. The rooms are nice, and the lobby is nice. The hotel is located right next to excellent restaurants and shopping. It is also a short distance to the attractions as well. The service is excellent, and the rooms are very comfortable. For being in a city, there are really big rooms, which was nice. Overall, the Fairmont Georgetown is a great hotel. We had a very good stay.

Getting to the hotel from DCA we took the Metro for under $3.00 per person. This was our first time to DC. We purchased metro passes right at the Airport location. There is someone there to ask questions. The hotel was 6 stops to FOGGY BOTTOM metro stop. Walking from the station to the hotel was about 6-7 blocks. It worked ok for us but was a bit further then I was expecting from reviews. If you use the metro and have problems with walking, you need to consider this locaton.

If you are visiting as a tourist to see the sights, consider purchasing an "unlimited metro pass". A 7 day pass is $35. In the 5 1/2 days I was in DC I spent that per person.

Staff at the hotel is great. I could really not say enough great things about the employees that work there from the door men to the front desk staff. Everyone always had a smile on their face and ready to assistant you with anything.

The rooms were lovely. They offerend everything you would expect from a hotel of this type. It was so nice returning from a full day of touring to a spotless room. We never saw the cleaning staff but they did a great job. We would have told them that if we saw them but they were never seen.

We did not eat at the hotel.

On most nights we would not return the hotel till after 10p. The walk from the metro would take about 7-9 minutes. It was a walk that was through some residential areas. We felt safe.

There is a Trader Joe's (1 block from the hotel) and Whole Foods (by the metro station) if you want to pick up some snacks or beverages. One night we purchased some ice cream at Trader Joe's. Asked the hotel to put it in the freezer to save for our return from an evening tour. On a hot evening it was great coming back to enjoy a cool treat in our room. Both stores close at 10p.

Hotel does offer bike rental. If you join the Fairmont Club the rental is free for 2 hours and $25 each additional hour. We wanted to use the bikes but we just didn't have the time to.

We did not use the health club/pool. There is a charge for these which is a surprise for the quility of the hotel.

Yes the hotel is great and nice to call "home" for 5 nights. I have nothing negative to say about the hotel itself. The only thing I would change would be is being closer to the Metro. Location is very important to me and having a hotel, tourist site or landmark right by a metro is important to me. The Fairmont is not as close as I would hae liked it to be. I would stay here again but would check other options if a metro station was closer.

Bring your walking shoes and pull out your maps.....enjoy evertying our Capital city has to offer.

Your review is full of valuable information that should be very helpful to future guests. Out of everything you shared, this bit is our favorite:” Staff at the hotel is great. Everyone always had a smile on their face and ready to assistant you with anything.” We love to hear that and couldn’t agree more!
