Get there by 8:00 AM to watch the vendors setting up. Lot's of photo opportunities. You will have time to grab a crepe later.

We read that the Eastern Market was a place to find fresh food and arts and crafts. We found food vendors inside the market and people selling plants outside the market, but no arts and crafts. For the visitor from out of town this is not worth visiting; for those looking for fresh food or flowers come on down.

From other reviews I was expecting more, perhaps I was there too early on the season. There was nothing unique among the vendors and there was a limited number of them. Inside the fresh fish, meats and produce looked amazing but not of much use to an out of town visitor. WE tend to like these types of venues but this was not among the best we have visited. Worth the trip if you've nothing else to do.

Eastern Market is the oldest continuously operating market in DC. The main building houses meat, fish and produce vendors. On the weekends, locally-grown produce stalls spill outside, alongside a craft/flea market. If you are looking for a unique DC souvenir, try the photography, art or map stalls. You can pick up very nice, artsy professional photos or paintings of the DC area that are reasonably priced. The map vendors specialize in antique DC, but have maps from around the world, too.

The market is located on the Blue/Orange Metro line, at the Eastern Market stop. Exit the subway and walk one block across Pennsylvania Avenue.

This is a great addition to a weekend trip to the see the Capitol/Supreme Court/Library of Congress. It's only a 10 minute walk east of the Capitol down Pennsylvania Avenue.

And if you are hungry, there is a large selection of nice restaurants/bars, both across from the market and a few blocks away on 8th Street, SE. Ted's Bulletin is great for breakfast,--their homemade pop tarts are awesome (but get there early, it gets crowded and the waits are long). For lunch, Match Box has great gourmet pizzas, or try Anbar for Balkan cuisine or Cava for Mediterranean tapas.

Eastern Market is located in the Capitol HIll neighborhood, full of 19th and early 20th century row houses. It's a classic neighborhood for a walk.

This outdoor venue is quite unique. It has a mix of craft items, antiques, reproductions, and a small farmers market. There is something for everyone.
