Wow. I'm walking near the White House. I can't get near it, but then I find the White House Visitor Centre. That's got to be good then. No; it's not.
The Visitor Centre is in a temporary building somewhat near the White House. It shows a loop about Presidents and The White House. It has a small souvenir section. Don't bother. Keep dreaming of, and looking at the real thing.

We were disappointed to learn that we were not able to visit the White House on a tour as the US Government have restricted this to American Citizens and no one from outside the USA can visit. So we looked at the White House from outside and then decided to find the visitors center to learn more. The normal location of the visitors centre was closed for refurbishment so it is temporarily located near the grounds down from the White House. The staff in the building seemed to be miserable and unfriendly - one lady was very snappy with members of the public. The range of items for sale in the shop was not brilliant. However, there was a really informative film being shown on the White House - its history, layout and showed the rooms. This was the highlight of the center

The Visitor's Center is closed for renovation. The temporary Visitor's Center is in a FEMA-like trailor, most of which is a gift shop. Next door, the public restrooms were filthy, even though they had just supposedly been cleaned, according to the posted schedule. Disgusting and beneath anyone's reasonable standards. Washington, you can do better than this!

Basically this is just a souvenir shack. The visitor center for the White House, the home of the President of the United States of America could be a stately building of immense proportion designed to inspire awe and power on a continual phalanx of visiting hopefuls.

Reality sets in when you see how small the truth is. They're working on this, but the outlines of the permanent structure is not that much beyond what the parks service has now. I'm thinking we all take up a collection. Milk money from all the elementary kids in schools across the nation for one day should be able to double the size and lay a foundation for a summer home somewhere in the Rocky Mountains. Surely we as a country can do a little better??
