“Close to Sights, Nearby Nightlife Lacking”
Reviewed 13 June 2011

My daughter and I stayed here while on Spring Break. We really appreciated how close it was to many of the major sites we wanted to see. It was nice having a microwave and fridge in the room for snacks and leftovers. Our view wasn't very scenic (a loading/parking area), but we weren't much bothered by it. Bus stops, subway, and bike rental were all within a block or so of the hotel. We had a complimentary breakfast buffet whose contents were predictable, yet tasty. Our waitstaff were unfailingly pleasant. The bar offered evening drink specials, which were also quite welcome!

One quibble: The evening we went down to use the pool, we found it small and unbearably chilly. Even my daughter (who must have inherited her "polar bear" genes from her father) thought it was too cold. I would think that even if the hotel caters primarily to business travelers, the pool would be bigger to accommodate lap swimmers. I hope its temperature that night was an unusual glitch.

If you go to Washington, do familiarize yourself with the local public transit system. I was very happy with their coverage, the frequency of their buses/trains, and surprisingly, their website. Their Trip Planner (http://www.wmata.com/rider_tools/tripplanner/tripplanner_form_solo.cfm) is very helpful and right on the mark!

As mentioned in some of the other reviews here, they roll up the sidewalks in this area right around 6 p.m. As much as we liked this hotel, the next time we come (now that we're familiar with the Metro system), we'll probably try to find something around DuPont Circle.

Great location in Washington, D.C. Very close to the metro station, close to the Mall and monuments. Very clean room and great breakfast. Also, the beds were very comfortable which is a big plus for both the business traveler and the leisure traveler. I highly recommend this hotel.

The check-in staff were very friendly and welcoming, always with a smile. The concierges (I dealt with several) were all very accomodating. They explained the subway system to us which was very handy and just across the street from the hotel. We needed to get to the the Nationals baseball stadium and the directions to get there using the subway were great. They offered good advice on restaurants.

Room Tip: I asked for two rooms with a view.

We booked this last minute. The view we had left a lot to be desired but really that wasn't much of a concern. We were in late every night so we didn't pay any attention to the view. The best was the location, the staff, and the food. We were so close to everything we wanted to see and do, that it might our trip go so smoothly. Our last night we met the Chef and spent the evening at the hotel bar, the staff was so friendly and talkative we felt right at home. We won't stay anywhere else on our next trip.

Location: Outstanding! Just a few blocks from the White House, a couple more to The Mall, and across the street was a Metro Stop for everything else. You really don't need a car unless you're traveling outside of the DC area. Because it's in the business district, however, it does get a little isolated at night, so it's always good to be aware of your surroundings.

Service: The front desk staff and concierge were always helpful, from room selection, attraction info, and tour recommendations (including one that picks you up right at the hotel). We ate breakfast and several meals at the hotel and always had good, friendly service. Housekeeping was outstanding, providing extra towels and keeping the room very clean. They work very hard and efficiently throughout our stay and we greatly appreciated their efforts and friendliness each day!

Quality: The hotel seems fairly recent, and the beds and amenities were all in excellent condition - including the AC which was effective and not overly loud. There was also free Wi-Fi and Internet which was an added bonus.

Room Tip: We recommend the higher floors facing the front

HG in Washington 14th Street was selected by my husband and it was a great choice.

1. Location -> we walked to all the attractions and used a taxi only to come back as we were tired.
Tip:One day you can cover the Smithsonian and finish with the capitol. Catch a taxi and come back. Second Day you can see the white house, Washington Monument and other Memorials. You can rent a bike / turnmobiles on the way.
All attractions are near the hotel.

2. Pantry: First night we were late and couldnt find a restaurant. The Pantry at the hotel has a good selection of frozen and microwaveable meals, water, snacks, chargers etc. We picked some and the whole lot costed just 16 dollars, A hotel pantry at MRP Rates is awesome.
Tip: before leaving for the day of sightseeing, you can even buy water and snacks from the hotel pantry. The rates are much cheaper than outside shops and stalls on the way.

3. Service:When we were at the Capitol, there was a sudden shower. We rushed back to the hotel in a taxi. The hotel staff had umbrellas ready when we stepped out, had fresh towels for all the guests. Very impressed with the service.

4. Rooms: large and convenient. Has complimentary Internet.

This hotel was located in a great spot to many tourist attractions. Our family was able to walk to the White House and National Mall area fairly easily. We had a rental car so it was a little pricey to park, but at least I felt the car was secure. They only have valet parking.

The lobby is nice with a restaurant / bar attached. We didn't eat there, but the micro-beer at the bar was good. Good service at the front desk. We got there late morning hoping to check-in early, although they couldn't check as in that early, they called us when one of our rooms was ready. They were able to accommodate our request for 2 connecting rooms.

The rooms were clean and decent sized. The beds were really comfortable, we all slept very well after all the walking around from the previous day. Rooms have fridges and microwaves. Bathrooms were a little small but fine.

The indoor pool is located on the lower level and the kids loved it. Lots of chairs for the adults to relax. Fitness center looked nice, but we didn't use it.

We would definitely stay here again given the price and location. The room rates were very reasonable compared to the other hotels in the area.

Room Tip: Keep checking back as room rates can drop.
