“Superb”

Very tasteful - lots of quotes surrounding a large stone statue, easy to find and reflects the spirit of his inspirational speeches.

“This is a Tribute Appropriate to His Memory.”
Reviewed 28 March 2012

Pictures cannot do justice to the relief of MLK that looks out over the tidal basin. It is breathtaking. The park ranger explanation as to why it's a relief and not a statue will blow you away. You should go on a park ranger tour for a true understanding of the total site. There's no cost and well worth the time. My husband and I combined this with a visit to the FDR memorial and the Cherry Blossom Festival. It was a day well spent

“Inspiring -- go at night”
Reviewed 28 March 2012

The new memorial for Martin Luther King, Jr. has been the subject of considerable controversy. King is depicted solemn (some say, angry) and standing as though emerging from a block of stone, arms crossed. Some say the posture is all wrong. None (that I have heard) mention, however, that the memorial sits directly across the Tidal Basin from the Jefferson Memorial. To me, this siting makes the posture seem not only right but appropriate for his time and for ours. Regardless, I found the memorial, its siting, the quotes ground into granite walls stretching off to either side -- the whole panoply -- to be incredibly inspiring. Add to that: visitors of all races and ages, their obvious individual and collective awe, and a Park Service ranger telling stories from Civil Rights history surrounded by a silent throng ... inspiring. I visited about 10:00 p.m. (yes, at night) and recommend that you go after dark. The surrounding darkness, quiet, and strategic lighting add to the experience.

“impressive”
Reviewed 27 March 2012

we saw the MLK memorial during our old town trolley twilight tour. I had seen pics of it before but seeing it in person was very moving. The design is beautiful & meaningful. Be sure to read all the quotes around the wall.
