“Good hotel, great location”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

We knew Sofitel hotels from other (European) vacations and we stayed at Sofitel Lafayette Square (Washington DC) few nights in July 2014.
- We've selected this hotel for its location, since we wanted to walk to the Memorial, Smithsonian museums, Capitol, etc.
- Check-in/check-out - quick, no lines, since the hotel was not full.
- Room is average size, furniture old-ish.
- Bed/mattress is amazing !
- Complimentary toiletries (Lanvin, very good), robes and slippers are provided.
- No coffee maker in the room.
- Mini-fridge in the room; some prices: 15 $ for a little cognac bottle, 6 $ Coke/Sprite, etc. plus 15% tax, plus 20% other tax, etc
- Hotel bistro and bar: not many menu choices, 15$ small glass of wine in the "le Bar" (one restaurant down the road, same wine, in a bigger glass it was 6$).
- Stuff - service ok; we didn't need the concierge services.
- Valet parking - 50$/day
Overall it was a nice stay and I would recommend this hotel to my friends.

After 2 nights in Sofitel, I don't know how I can now go on to stay in other hotels. It has to be Sofitel henceforth. You have spoilt me, you have spoilt my husband, and most of all, you have spoilt our little 18-month-old who refused to take off the fluffy bathrobe that you so awesomely provided for her…
The location was fantastic (Obama is a neighbor), the service was more than impeccable (impeccabl-est?), the room was not huge but charming and more than sufficient for our needs. We had our breakfast and one dinner at the onsite restaurant (Ici). The staff at both the hotel and the restaurant were nothing less than excellent, and their patience, really admirable and commendable. Especially when the aforementioned headstrong 18-month-old also loves throwing fries, napkins, crayons on the floor. Thank you for taking care of us, two very tired and harried parents and one, er, interesting toddler, whom they called "Princess".

Stayed for 6 nights on business and so got to make good use of the hotel facilities. Firstly, brilliantly located one block from the White House, easy walking distance to the mall, monuments, restaurants etc. Nice restaurants surrounding it and quick food spots like Starbucks and pret a manger all around. Lobby is nice, not very grand but has a nice bar which is the perfect amount of busy. Not noisy but enough going on to make it welcoming and a pleasant place to have pre or post dinner drinks. Bar also has a nice outside seating area (which isn't that common in DC surprisingly). Staff are welcoming and efficient but not intrusive. We were given a box of macaroons to welcome us because we were staying for a week. Housekeeping staff were excellent. Everyday our room was immaculately tidied with care, not just the bare minimum, real attention to detail which was very nice and made us feel welcome. There was also a turn down service every evening. Bed was large and very very comfy. There is also a pillow menu but we didn't use it. The decor of the room is simple, not particularly stylish but is classic so it doesn't feel dated. Bathroom is similarly styled and is a good size with separate shower cubicle. Good quality fixtures. Everything in the room is functional and ergonomic making it very easy to use. Plenty of room, dark, quiet, temperature controlled. Good cupboard space. Very comfortable. We used room service several times. It was efficient, warm. Generous size. We have stayed in many hotels that are more luxurious and more stylish but this place really won us over because of it's no nonsense classic style, efficiency, comfort, professional staff and attention to detail. We had not stayed in a sofitel before but wouldn't hesitate to use this hotel or other Sofitel in the future.

We spent 3 nights at the Hotel in mid July and had a superb time. Rooms are of a good size, well appointed and provide the usual Sofitel levels of comfort. The Bar and Restaurant offer good quality food and beverages and the staff provide an excellent level of service. The Hotel is well situated being close to major attractions and the concierge is happy to book and provide concise information on local attractions and trips. If I have one criticism, it is the way that the Group block and reserve payment against ones credit card as this is often confusing and makes little sense to me but seems to add up in the end? However, one minor criticism should not overshadow what was a splendid few days with the Sofitel Washington.

Out of the 5 cities and 5 hotels I stayed at, this was my favourite hotel.

We caught the train into Union Station, and the can ride was about 10 minutes to the hotel.

Upon arrival we were greeted by the lovely doormen, and checking in was a breeze.

We got a Luxury King on the 10th floor (Room 1022) and it was very spacious.

There was no coffee machine in the room, however there is complimentary coffee & tea downstairs.

It's a quiet hotel, which means the receptionist and concierge were always available to help.

The location is very nice. You can feel safe walking around there late at night. It's a 5 minute walk from the White House if you want to see that. But in my opinion, you shouldn't worry too much about location in DC. There is a lot to see and a lot to cover, so walking everywhere would be tough. So my recommendation is to stay somewhere downtown and get on a 'Hop on, hop off' bus tour as they'll pretty much cover everything.

That being said, DC was the perfect hotel for me. It's downtown and not too far from everything. Would definitely recommend this hotel to someone.

The Sofitel brand continues to celebrate its French heritage with menu items, signage in French and other European touches. We were here for one night and its location right by the White House and the Mall are perfectly suited to both business and leisure travelers. We ate at Le Bar where prices are less expensive and were glad they had interesting drinks for our 11 year old as well.

It turns out that FC Inter Milan were also staying here and that added a nice bonus for us.

We stayed in a luxury king room. It was very clean, updated, and all the necessary amenities. we had a nice view of 15th street. The hallways in the hotel are remarkably bright and well designed. A nice respite from drab and dingy hallways.

The Sofitel DC is located near Lafayette Square just a few blocks from the White House. It is very centrally located within Washington and has convenient access to the Metro system a half block away. There are excellent restaurants very near, including the ICI restaurant in the Sofitel and Bobby Van's Steakhouse just across the street. In addition, there is a CVS across Lafayette Square in case you forget any sundries or want to grab something to read or snacks. It's central location also means a steady stream of cabs and, if you use Uber, plenty of Uber cars roaming around that one can arrive within 1 minute.

Upon arrival, the doormen open the doors and welcome you to the hotel. There is Le Bar to your left and ICI restaurant to your right. The registration desk is down the hall in front of you. The registration staff are very friendly. Be prepared to be greeted in French, which adds to the charm of the hotel.

We were lucky to get a room on the 12th (top) floor of the hotel. We had a superior king room (~370 sq. ft.). It had a very nice marble bathroom with both a shower (with rainfall shower head) and separate tub. Our room had two bathrobes and sets of slippers. The room felt spacious and the bed and bed linens were extremely comfortable. The pillows were also comfortable and provided for relaxing night's sleep.

I mentioned in my title of the review that the hotel needs updating. While the bathroom was in fairly good shape, the rest of the room was in need of some attention. The carpet was very rough, uncomfortable to the touch, and outdated (brown-yellow color). The ceiling tiles concealing the HVAC unit had some rust spots on them that clearly stood out against the white panels. The bedrooms furniture has seen its better day. There are significant scratches and nicks on the wooden furniture. One of the legs on the desk was angled and clearly had been damaged. Same was true for this round glass top rolling table (for what purpose I am not sure and contained nothing on it from the hotel) with broken and angled legs.

Another interesting feature of our room was that you opened the door directly into the bed. The room is large enough that the bed should have been placed along the back wall near the window and the desk and sitting area moved to the front where the door opened.

I don't think people stay very long here based on the size of the closet. We were staying one night and had trouble getting unpacked in the space provided. The closet was tiny! Maybe room for 4-5 dress shirts. The drawers (2) were also tiny. If you are planning a long stay, plan on living out of your suitcase, there is no room for more than a day or two of clothes to be unpacked.

My wife grew up in Europe and really appreciated the real croissants and pain au chocolat that were served with our breakfast. The room service meal, we had omelettes, was typical fare. The bread basket was the best part.

On a humorous note, my wife was going to order in French, but I noticed that to do so would cost 2% more in service charge. I am hoping it is a mistake, but the English version of their room service menu has a service charge of 18% and their French version has a service charge of 20%. Be careful what language you choose to place your order!

We got an excellent night's sleep and had a very enjoyable morning. The hotel was quiet and we weren't disturbed by any loud noises from a neighboring room or from the hallway. The staff is very friendly and the location can't be beat, especially if you want to walk around and use the Metro to see DC.
