The home and its contents are beautifully preserved. The ranger gave a decent tour and context of Mr. Douglas' life, however, I would encourage visitors to read at least a juvenile non-fiction book before visiting. He accomplished so much more than the ranger could cover during the tour. The mention of his life's focus on education (gaining and sharing) was barely discussed.

We really enjoyed touring Frederick Douglas' house. Tour guide was great.
Save some time to watch the 20 minute video in the visitor center.
Also, reserve a spot online before driving ouit.

The Frederick Douglass House is a must see site in your sightseeing in Washington, DC. View the introductory video before you take the guided tour of Frederick Douglass' house. It provides an excellent foundation to what you are about to see and is a rather full history of Mr. Douglass, the man. Also enjoy the wonderful views of the District of Columbia from the House that sits on top of the hill.

I have visited DC several times and seen most of the big museums and monuments. I happened upon this while planning my trip, and I'm so glad that I went. It was worth the trek out to Anacostia to see where one of my personal heroes spent his last days. The exhibits and statue in the Visitor's Center were great. The film was somewhat informative, though quite dated and a bit sitcom-y. The house itself is magnificent and affords a great view of the DC and Maryland. The tour guide was knowledgeable, and it was amazing to see that much of the original furniture (and china) remained. To get there, we took a cab from DuPont Circle (around $18) because we were in a hurry in the morning, but then walked the 3/4 miles to the Metro and took the train back for 1/6 the price. Be sure to reserve tickets in advance online ($1.50/person). I tried to reserve the night before and there were no tickets available. Luckily we were in town for a few days so we went on the last day, but plan ahead so that you don't miss out.

We drove in a very early Sunday morning. The place opens at 9am. And the first house visit is also at that time.
We watched a very interesting video in the visitor center which should not be missed.
Then we headed to the house and had an excellent tour by a very knowledgeable ranger.
The house is well preserved and most of the displays are original FD possessions.
We learned a lot about US History and the view over DC is great.
