“Go for the Lotus Blossom Festival - A Must See”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

I had my jaw dropped for the first 10 minutes when I visited the Lotus Blossom Festival recently. It is an absolute must see if visiting DC in mid to late July.

“Lotus and Water Lilies worthy of Monet”
Reviewed 12 July 2014

This lovely Water Garden alongside the Anacostia river is a haven for anyone that loves showy flowers and the hidden beauty of everything that lives near the water. Fields of different types of Lotus await as well as Ponds of Water Lilies, common and rare. Discover Turtles, Frogs, Butterflies, Dragon flies, Great Blue Herons and more.
There is a small Visitor Center with a Gift shop, and Park Rangers are on hand to conduct Nature walks. Everyone enjoys the garden, from Photography Clubs to Summer camp participants. There are picnic tables shaded by large trees.
Bring Water, Sunscreen and a Hat!
Lotus bloom in July, but the flowers close every day around 3 p.m.

“Peaceful Enchantment”
Reviewed 5 July 2014

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is an oasis within easy walking distance of the DC metro (Deanwood stop on the orange line). The wetland flora is amazing; expect to see serious photographers here as well as families and others strolling between the ponds and on the boardwalk. It's a meditative place, a picnic spot, an easy getaway.

“Fantastic Place for Photographers”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

The aquatic gardens have acres and acres of lotus plants and water lilies, originally planted by Civil War veteran Walter Shaw and his daughter Helen. Late May through September is the blooming period, but visitors should be aware that the blooms are at their best in the early morning. If the temperature rises above 89 degrees, the blooms close up and will not re-open until the next morning. If you visit, be prepared to run into lots of photographers, but if you are interested in photographing these flowers, you can easily get some amazing shots.

The neighborhood is not considered the best part of town, and can be tricky to find, but I've been there many times and find it well worth the trip.

“Biked from Capitol Hill”
Reviewed 6 June 2014 via mobile

Such a great change of pace from the "normal" DC things to do! All the other reviews are true, but I wanted to add that we rented bikes in Capitol Hill and rode to Kenilworth Park, mostly on a great bikepath. Maybe the neighborhood has improved since other reviews, we didn't feel at all unsafe. Could have stayed and wandered longer had we thought to bring a picnic and sunscreen. In addition to the flowers we saw huge frogs, many small fish, turtles of all sizes, a million dragonflies and two snakes. Great day, best of our DC visit.
