“Wonderful service and nice to be away from the hubbub of DC”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 December 2009

My husband was attending a conference, and I tagged along. Our room faced the Washington Monument (others face the Jefferson Memorial and Tidal Basin). The room was nicely appointed and comfortable. The spacious marble bathroom had a great tub and shower. There is a spa, large indoor pool, steam and sauna rooms, and workout area. Service was wonderful-nice turn down, get ice for you, etc. We ate a couple of meals at my husband's meetings, and the quality was above what you typically get at those kind of affairs. I ate lunch in one of the restaurants, and it was very nice and reasonable (compared to drinks, room service, etc.). The Metro is only a couple of blocks away and taxis are readily available. We walked to the Holocaust Museum. If you are looking for a budget-friendly hotel for the family's trip to DC, I would not recommend the Mandarin Oriental. But if you want a nice weekend with your spouse, I would highly recommend this hotel.

Stayed for two nights on a business trip - on the meeting convener's dime. Truly lovely hotel, spacious room, extensive workout area that included private women and men's whirlpool and steam rooms. Staff members were helpful and good natured - the turn down service warmed the room each evening in ways I'd not experienced before. This was the most resort-like hotel I've had the pleasure to stay in.

Two things to note: there is no commerical district nearby, so dining option are very limited. If you're willing to walk a mile or two, you can get to areas with more choice. While menus from the hotel's restaurants / room service offered a broad array of choices, the prices were very high - I paid $46 for a house salad and appetizer.

Would gladly stay again if seeking a respite from the mad rush of D.C.

I took my husband there for HIGH TEA on his 81st birthday thinking that this would be a first class operation. Were WE ever disappointed. First, the Empress Lounge is right off the reception area -- attached to the bar. The woman greeting us had a haughty attitude like she was doing us a favor just to seat us. She barely paid any attention to us while there and neither did anyone else. Don't they have standards for their staff? If so someone has failed!!! The worst part is that we just returned from the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh and thought our country might have something similiar -- we were wrong.

I recently stayed here 5 nights for a business conference with my husband. The room was quite good, althought the bed was in the wrong position to watch TV (had to watch in a 90 degrees hook). Breakfast buffet was very good.
We took the Taipan club and paid 100 dollars a night extra for this club. For this amount it includes breakfast, non-alcoholic drinks, internet and evenening snacks at the Taipan Club Lounge. People there are great, very friendly and professional. Which we cannot say from one particular receptionist. When we asked for the bill, much to our surprise
1) the hotel did not only charge the 100 dollars a night for the Taipan club (with the extras mentioned above) but also charge us for 5 breakfasts (about 300 dollars too much, because breakfast was included in the amount paid for the Taipan club),
2) for 6 nights in stead of 5 (another 325 dollars too much),
3) for internet (which was included in Taipan) and that was another 75 dollars too much and last (and least)
4) for a minibar which we did not use (20 dollars too much). Alltogether if we wouldn't have looked carefully we would have paid almost 800 dollars too much (2300 dollar which should have been 1500). A mistake we would not expect at a 5 star hotel. But that was not the worst part: The receptionist substracted all the wrong amounts (and mumbled something like: yes thats right) without saying ONE WORD OF AN EXCUSE!!!
Our motto always is: Mistakes can be made everywhere, but you can recognize quality in the way they solve it.
Charging us 800 dollars too much without saying anything about being sorry for this mistake simply was very rude in our opinion and not what we expect from a 5 star hotel

This hotel is absolutely beautiful! Our room had 2 double beds, a desk, and a sitting area among the standard items. The hotel room was roomy enough that you could lie your suitcase on the ground and still have room to walk around. The beds were cozy but a little on the small side (what more can you say about a double bed!) The bathrooms were spacious with a separate tub and shower. I absolutely loved the shower which had one of those rain spouts and the tub was huge. It was perfect for bathing our kids. The hotel definitely knows how to make you feel comfortable while in your room. Housekeeping comes by every night to ask if you need turn down service (basically ice and bottled water and anything else). Room service is steep but that's to be expected and the food is mediocre. It's not bad but it also isn't the greatest however the service is amazing.

Our room overlooked the Washington monument and the Tidal Basin and was within walking distance to the National Mall and some of the other tourist attractions. A Starbucks and CVS Pharmacy is also conveniently located across the street and taxi service is readily available once you walk out the hotel doors.

While this hotel is absolutely amazing, it feels more catered towards business travelers, not tourists. I traveled with family and my 2 kids and I think we were the only ones not wearing a dress or suits. My children were the only 2 I saw while we stayed there (5 days). I would definitely recommend this place and stay here again but I wouldn't stay here again with toddlers and I'd definitely bring at least 1 casual dinner dress to dine in their restaurants.

Had a wonderful 5 days in at the Mandarin Oriental in D.C. with my parents. The rooms are wonderful and the restaurants are great. It is a quiet location, but if you like to walk, most things are within walking distance. The hotel is located only two blocks off the Mall and to the closed Metro Station. You can walsk to the Capital, Whitehouse and Chinatown in 30 minutes. The food at the hotel is wonderful and the staff could not be any nicer. I had a small issue andit was resolved without a problem. I can not wait to return with my wife and family. The hotel only hav valet parking that is expensive, but you are ind.c. and parking everywhere is expensive. Also, a new CVS, Strabucks & Pottbelly just opened and it just outside the front door. However, we did walk to several other restaurant that the hotel recommened to us. Try Tony's in Chinatown if you like Dim Sum. They also had Jazz in the loby most evening and thay have what looks like a wonderful dessert/wine/tea tasing on several afternnons during the week. I was not able to try it, but would have if I would have had the time to enjoy. Also, the Taxi to the hotel was only about 10 minutes and $12.00 from Reagan.

certainly not ; we have stayed at the very best of hotels around the world for the last 30 years and the oriental doesn't even start to compare
we arrived by train from N Y C to be met by the taxi strike ; called the hotel to see if they had a car to collect us , a 5 min ride ,and the reaction was to tell us to get there by metro , and this with 3 weeks of baggage , i persisted and after a very long hold they agreed to send a car ; result a $94.00 chrge to my room for a 5/10 min ride , this was reduced to $70.00 but still far to much
the room , nice but not 5 star , did not match the publicity photographs ; flowers , fresh fruit, no tea or coffee making facility , etc
two of us in the room , toiletries for one and only one bathrobe
the hotel is not convenient for downtown ; i would have thought a complimentary shuttle would have been in order
on check in we were not informed about the complimentary continenetal breakfast nor the two drinks in the lounge
the check in staff were great and the chamber maid was more than helpfull
luckily the starabucks across the road filled a much needed gap
probaly great for conventions but once a hotel starts doing this sor of thing to survive you can kiss 5 star goodbye
never again , willards here we come
