Read the reviews here for the "Old Ebbitt Grill", and since we were planning a White House tour, decided to stop in and try it out.
If you're looking for a traditional bar/restaurant with a warmth and charm of Washington, this is the place. Add that to the very accomodating, friendly staff and excellent menu selections, and you have a restaurant that is a "must" when visiting DC.
I highly recommend the crab cakes, the best that I've ever eaten!
As mentioned, this restaurant is very close to the White House, just down the block, and as such has an eclectic mix of patrons. Families are welcome equally to the business set, and the staff make you feel very much at home.
Wonderful experience, highly recommended!

I've been to DC many times for work over the last 15 years, but this is the first time with my wife and teens. I had to take them to the Old Ebbitt our first night for dinner. It was a Friday and the place was packed. I remember the Old Ebbitt of days gone by - where it seemed 60% of the patrons (including me) were in business suits working in or near the White House or on the Hill and doing DC deals. So my wife and kids dressed up a little. But on this Friday night it seemed that the business clientelle was only about 5% - with the other 95% tourists in shorts just comming off a day at the Smithsonian. We had reservations at 8pm - showed up early at 7:15pm - and were called for our table at 8pm. Unlike how I remember Old Ebbitt 5 to 10 years ago, the service was good (not great), the food was tasty (not spectacular), and the ambience was busy/noisy (not classic). Old Ebbitt is a great spot - then and now - but my family who has heard me raving about this classic DC insitution for years wondered what all the fuss was about.

The Old Ebbitt Grill in downtown DC is a very popular spot for lunch and dinner, for both local businesspeople and tourists. Its location, just across the street from the White House, makes it within walking distance to a number of attractions.

The restaurant itself has quite a bit of character. The artwork ranges from the mounted heads of various critters above the bar to nude paintings and sculptures. There is an atrium seating area that is a bit more open and quieter than the rest of the establishment.

The food is usually very good and not too expensive. My personal favorites are the pasta dishes, the steak (or fried chicken) salad, fish and chips, and the reuben sandwich.

Service is usually pretty efficient. At the end of the year (mid- to late December) it can get really crazy busy, with lots of end-of-year lunches celebrated by small groups of businesspeople. Even if you get a reservation at these times, the service can be very slow and you may not get a favorite table.

One of the best-kept secrets about Old Ebbitt is the express counter, located in the atrium area. Although it can be extremely busy, the food is outstanding and the prices are very reasonable. This can be a good bet if you have a healthy appetite but you’re in a hurry.

We were looking for a restaurant that was close and reasonable. We were told by the W Hotel that the Old Ebbitt was good. We stopped and looked at the menu outside. It looked good so we went in. It was around 2 or 3 pm when we went. It was a little busy in the dining room but we were told there were 3 bars that we could eat at if we wanted or we could wait for a seat. We opted to eat at the bar. The bartender was very friendly and I loved the antique look of the restaurant. We placed our order and we were told by the bartender that this was the 1st restaurant in DC. The food was great, it came out promptly. I would recommend it to anyone that stays around 15th & F street.

We waited 30 min for table, even with a reservation. The place was amazingly loud! Like a crowded bar. To be fair, the food and wait staff were good, but hard to overcome the environment. Pretty decorations. Marginal wine list.

The place has the look of almost an elegant steak house inside, but the noise and menu couldn't keep up.
