We were thrilled to find this gem in the heart of DC! Just out of the inner city in a trendy little spot and near enough to Embassy Circle to presume that the German Embassy must have some kind of hand in the placement and the authenticity. They even serve Dunkels. Something I haven't seen since the Edelweiss Club (outside of Europe, anyway). Everything about the place made me want to breathe deep and taste the very air.
We started with the perfect potato pancakes and the excellent homemade applesauce. A word about the applesauce: my grandmother's recipes are punctuated with phrases like "if you use my applesauce, you will need less cinnamon" and Cafe Berlin's tasted very like what I grew up with.
We had the pork chops (if they were American style) with spatzen, the beef sauerbraten with dumplings and red cabbage. Perfect.
Just a word here, I have been ruined for mainstream pidgeon-German/American food since tasting the real thing at a very young age. I cannot stomach wurst if it is not homemade, home rolled and/or home smoked. I never touch pale cole slaw and sneer at dumplings. I ate well at Cafe Berlin, as did my tablemates. Great homey touches everywhere and wonderful service. We took the cheesecake and cherry crumb home for later and polished that off too!
