Sign is a typical college bar where GW, American, and maybe some Georgetown students will be overtaking on any typical thursday, friday, and saturday. The whale pails (large pails of drinks) are great. This is not a place for a date or a casual drink with a friend. Its not super clean, girls dance on the benches, and there is tons of alcohol spilled every night. This is your typical college bar. Don't say I didn't warn you. Also- they give out free happy hours and that just attracts more students. I would never eat here, but you could find me happily drinking here every weekend.

“Typical dive bar”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 September 2013

This is a typical dive bar... not a bad place to grab a drink before heading elsewhere if you're looking for a low key night out with friends.

Been around for quite awhile. Still a great saloon. One of the best burgers served in DC and a friendly bar staff

“Sign of the Terrible”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2013

Sign of the Whale used to be a great little place for lunch or happy hour. After a few years absence from this area, I stopped in today and was floored by what I found. The place is simply ratty. All the seats are torn, the floor filthy and the decor can best be described as seedy. Ordered iced tea, salad and the only seafood item (HELLO? Whale is part of the name!) which was fried fish. After 20 minutes of waiting with only one other couple at the bar (I mean the place ecchoed) out comes the salad which tasted like soap. I cancelled the rest of the mess and went someplace else.

I guess they aren't into food anymore; its just a joint Thumbsuckers go to drink themselves stupid.

“Best Cobb Salad -- one of the "Gems of M Street!"”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2013

The menu here is standard saloon, but is usually a cut above. The last time I was there, I had the Cobb Salad for the first time. Verdict: second to none!
