Lindy's--real name Lindy's Red Lion--located just four blocks up the street from the White House, was founded in 1974 and is a legendary Washington institution.
My favorite is the "Au Poivre Double Burger," cooked rare. The meat is topped with bacon and ground black peper on a six-inch soft sub roll. Even if there's a six-month absence between my visits, Dawn--the waitress and the soul of LIndy's-- always remembers me and places the order.with just a nod of the head for confirmation
There's a portrait of the late Robert F. Kennedy on the wall; the dedication reads, "The best burger I've ever eaten." What more of a recommendation do you need?
LIndy's trivia: George Washington University (GWU), which owns most of the real estate in this area, decided to build a shopping and office complex between 20th and 21st Street on Penn. But in order to realize their ambitious project, they had to convince all the owners to sell. The owners of Lindy's categorically refused, compelling GWU to wrap their building around Lindy's. Lindy's has steadfastly maintained its independence up to the present day.
