I took the redline subway from outside of DC to Chinatown station. From there its a short walk. Its in Chinatown where theres alot to do and eat. The Museum complex is split into two parts, the Portrait Gallery on one side and the American Art Museum on the other side. You cannot do both sides in one day, unless you want your brain to melt. The museum is free and get this, closes at 7 (amazing). Its the only free museum that closes at 7 in DC from what I can tell. The works of art there are very intriguing and some mind blowing, be sure to make it to the top and last floor where they house the American Contemporary art; Those are a sight to see. I spent 2-3hrs at the museum, was super tired after but man was it great.

This is a wonderful museum and the art collection is the best I have seen in this country. You can wander for hours and never get tired.

this museum is still a must do if you have the time while in
Washington DC. You will be amazed by the collection. It rivals that of the New York Museum of Art.

Aside from having a wonderful permanent art collection as well as traveling exhibits, this museum and the National Portrait Gallery are housed in a National Historic Landmark building. As stated in the museum brochure " The building's exceptional architecture features include porticos..., a curving double staircase, colonnades, vaulted galleries, large windows, and skylights as long as a city block". Also on the 3rd floor you can view art conservationists in five different laboratories and studios restoring picture frames, paintings, objects, and paper art.

This was a highlight for our artist daughter. A great selection from traditional works to contemporary stuff! Some interesting works in here, check it out. A bit north of the National Mall, but worth it.
