“Loved the history...”
Reviewed 18 May 2012

I was happy to see the story of the civil rights era played out for all to remember or experience for the fist time.

“An out of the way museum worth a side trip”
Reviewed 29 April 2012

The museum does a fantastic job of putting the involvement of Af-Am's in the US Civil War into context so the complex and compelling story is more easily understood. If you are fortunate enough to talk with Hari Jones, you are in for a treat. His passion for and in-depth knowledge of this subject is inspiring. Plan where you are going to park if driving since the area has very limited parking.

This is the tiniest museum I have ever seen. Don't bring kids there, this just a maze of panels on which tones of texts are written. Even for yourself, I think you'll need a guide.

“the museum needs a respectable space”
Reviewed 28 January 2012

It's disappointing to know Washington DC has a wealth of African American artifacts and history found no where else. History should be properly shown, but not in a small and confining space. The museum deserves a better space!

“Welcome to a New View of American History”
Reviewed 10 November 2011

First of all, the memorial and the museum are separate. To get the full experience, go to the museum first--across the street from the Metro exit. Hari Jones gives a rousing and fact-filled lecture on the African-American presence in the Civil War. Call ahead to see when he's speaking or to ask if you can book a meeting with him because he sets the stage better than any exhibit could. Then wander through the colorful and well-detailed exhibition. Between the artifacts and the stories, the Civil War will become a whole new part of history. Then head across the street to the moving memorial. I wouldn't have quite appreciated one without the other, but with both, my mind has been blown, and the kids I was with learned more than at any other place we went.
