“Just ok- spotty performances”

As a blue note, blues alley veteran was willing to give the place benefit of the doubt as this was (they say) Duke Ellington's nest- went durnig the Dc jazz festival kick-off and left feeling like I was in amateur hour.. Didn't even finish the set.. such a shame for a supposed landmark..

“Outstanding jazz in DC!”
Reviewed 26 February 2014

What a terrific venue. Perfect size, good layout, making for an intimate experience. Tip - sit on the side opposite the drums and as close to the band as possible for great views of the artists in action. I recommend viewing the artist on YouTube prior to going to make sure the music is to your liking. The food is also very good and extremely reasonable. The service can be a little slow but the venue, music, and food make up for it and then some.

There are some steep stairs to get down to the venue and I am not aware of an elevator. The wife and I are not spring chickens and this has not posed a problem for us at all.

“An esoteric experience”
Reviewed 31 January 2014

I went to the Bohemian Caverns to see the Christian Scott Quintet on January 25th. That was our first time every visiting this venue. We were amused that it was literally made to look like a cavern. It's a very dark and intimate setting. You really get an up-close and personal experience with the artist. The table seating is first come first serve. You need to line up out front about a 45 minutes before the show if you want to a seat. The food menu is limited. I ended up ordering a $15 cheeseburger and fries. The wait staff was courteous and expedient. The only downside was the dirty diaper/sewage smell! Hopefully, whatever caused it has been rectified. We'd really like to go back again . Amazing show in an amazing venue.

“Historic Jazz Spot”
Reviewed 7 January 2014

Bohemian Caverns was once a venue for the likes of Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ramsey Lewis and Charlie Mingus. The simulated cavern below is a great venue for small groups and vocalists. We had a pretty good meal, drinks, and show for New Years Eve. Definitely worth a visit if you are looking for a historic spot to listen to good music. One block walk from the U Street Station on the Metro Green Line. See a show here and stop by the nearby Ben's Chili Bowl for a half smoke with chili and you've really had a DC experience.

“Wonderful venue”
Reviewed 4 August 2013

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed an evening at Bohemian caverns -- wonderful jazz music, intimate setting, but not pretentious. Tickets were only $18 which is hard to beat.

We ate in the neighborhood -- not at the caverns -- and enjoyed the U St area. Easy metro ride too.

My only suggestion to management would be to improve the drinks -- my wine was okay but expected better for $9 per class
