“Boat ride on the C & O Canal”

C&O Canal Boat Ride
Reviewed 24 May 2013

We had a very informative Park Service ranger give us the history of the canal as we went through the lock and down the canal for this one hour trip. The boat is pulled by mules just as it was in the 1800's. The Park is a great place to visit so be sure to leave enough time to take the 15 minute walk to Great Falls for an outstanding view and experience. I will definitely go back to the park.

If you are in the Georgetown area and don't want to walk on the crowded main drag, go a block away for a peaceful walk by the canal. The C&O National Park Office had a "closed indefinitely" sign, but there were information boards about the history of the canal and locks. There are no boat rides here and from everything we saw it looks doubtful they will be returning any time in the near future.

It's probably not worth a special trip to Georgetown to see the canal (unless you are really into locks and canals), but if you are in the area, it would be woth a visit.

The canal boat in Georgetown is out of commission but The Mercer canal boat in nearby Potomac/Great Falls Maryland is alive and well. Pulled by mules and interpretive NPS crew operated. Stop in at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center for tickets and information. Well worth the trip!!

I'm not sure why previous reviewers were unable to ride the C&O Canal boat, but it's definitely up and running. It could have been budget cuts or lots of bad weather during that time of year.

So plan to ride the C&O Canal boats. It's a lot of fun! The crew are very informative and make it seem like you're riding during the early days of canal boats. It's always good to call ahead to make sure they are running the boats because they do cancel trips if there's bad weather or other circumstances. The boat rides run 3x/day.

We saw information about this mule drawn canal boat ride in several places including the 2012 Washington DC visitor's guide. We checked their website for operating times and days the tour runs several times, (even the day of our visit for directions)...only to find a sign saying they no longer operate due to safety concerns. We spent a considerable amount of time walking our 4 kids from the metro stop in Georgetown to the launch site. It was extremely frustrating and could easily be remedied by updating the webpage. :(
