“Greater than expected!”
Reviewed 1 May 2011

We are at the end of an 8 day stay in Washington D.C. and have thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the George Washington University Inn. From the moment we arrived, our stay has been great. Upon checking in we received a free upgrade to a suite, complete with kitchen and living room. So comfortable. There are 2 flat screen T.V.s, one in the living room and the other in the bedroom and all the pots and pans you could need to fix breakfast or dinner for two. The bathroom has a small closet for toiletries. The soap and lotion was replenished frequently. Even the hotel shampoo was good! And my hair is particularly sensitive to shampoos. The towels are fluffy and soft and the bed very comfortable. The room is quiet, with very little noise from the street. We are very close to the Foggy Bottom metro stop. There are restaurants within walking distance. There is also a Trader Joe's and small Safeway within walking distance as well. Great location, & courteous, helpful staff. The neighborhood is great, too, with friendly neighbors who guided us to some fabulous restaurants. We will definitely stay here again.

Dear Mariposa,

Thank you for your posting on Tripadvisor. It appears that you made us your home away from home on your eight night stay. I am happy that you were able to take advantage of our kitchenettes and some of the local grocery stores. Trader Joe's is one of my favorites. I am also glad that you enjoyed our shampoo amenities as well as our towels. Housekeeping does an excellent job to make sure that you have everything you need to make your stay more comfortable.

Please do come and stay with us again if you are ever in the DC area again!

The very nice valet parked our car and we took the Metro for the 5 days we were in DC. The hotel is located one block from the subway. Neighborhood is safe and clean. You can walk to many good restaurants. Try Founding Farmers on Pennsylvania, just before the circle. The room is good sized and sound proof. Plenty of hot water and good water pressure. Windows open for a spring breeze. Housekeeping was attentive and room was always cleaned up nice. You are also close enough to Lincoln Memorial, White House, and the mall to walk. Our family walked downtown in the evenings to see the monuments all lit up. Our kids (10 and 12) had no problem with the walk and it is very safe. There are actually cops and security guards everywhere.

You cannot beat the location for a visit to GW university. We didn't need to drive our car the entire visit...just a block from campus and the metro station. We arrived late and the hotel had filled all of the two-bed rooms so the front desk staff upgraded us to a one-bedroom suite at no extra charge. It had a very spacious living area with kitchenette...nice to have access to a small refrigerator. One major downside... the hotel is NOT air conditioned!!! Fortunately, the second night we were there was much cooler than the first. I would NOT recommend staying here during the summer months. We were able to open windows, but there were lots of sirens (to be expected in city)...fortunately, the hotel is in a more residential area so not much traffic just outside the building. We didn't find restaurants close by but just a short metro ride to downtown restaurants. Check out was very slow...only a small front desk with one assistant. It would be nice to receive statement under door in room like most hotels. Overall, good value for very basic, but spacious accommodations if you visit when it is cold.

Dear Carolina,

Thank you for taking the time complete a reveiw on Tripadvisor. We are pleased that you liked the location and the suite. We do find that our guests like the neighborhood setting especially with our close proximitey to the Metro, National Mall, and the GWU Hospital (sirens). We are sorry that you found it warm in your room. An older building such as our is one a two pipe system which means that we can only have heat or air conditioning on at one time. So we DO have air conditioning, it is just turned on when the weather becomes seasonably warmer. Air Conditioning is necessary in a city like ours because of the warm summers. If you are in the area again in the summer time, we do hope you come by and experience our air conditioning and warm hospitality!

Don't judge the GWU Inn by it's exterior. The room we had was as beautiful as the pictures. Having finished a tour of colleges in the eastern Pennsylvania to DC area, we were so glad to finally find a lovely, clean, safe hotel. This one is beautiful as a bonus. Eddie checked us in at the desk and helped us so much with maps, the metro, and lunch and dinner information and recommendations. It is a well-cared for old building. The sink and tub are antiques surrounded by new touches of furnishings, decor, and materials. We LOVED the dispensers in the shower for shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner: no tiny bottles for trash or recycling! We didn't even open the package of round hand soap! It was an environmental touch we really appreciated. The sheets and towels are good quality and there were lots of channels on the flat screen. I would stay again and again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the elevator and stairs.

Dear TooTravel;

We are happy that you enjoyed your recent stay here at the George Washington University Inn. It is very important our guests feel at home and get the attention that they deserve. Eddie is a gem and we are pleased that he is appart of our team here. I am even more happy that he helped you so much.

I also want to thank you for commenting on our Gilchrist and Soames amenity products. We made the switch almost a year ago because we wanted to reduce waste while still providing a high quality product. We are taking additional steps to become a "Greener" hotel that I hope you will see the next time you come back to visit with us.

Easy to get to by use of underground - around £60.00 per night - had kitchen area with hob - kettle, toaster and coffee maker. Had sitting area with big tv. Bedroom had big tv. There are not many resturants nearby except for the for the one at hotel - there is a 7/11 near. Very comfortable hotel and would recommend it.

I stayed at the GWUI with my daughter on a college visit. The rate was amazing - less than $100 and included parking and breakfast. I did not expect such a nice room, given the price. We stayed in a wheel chair accessible room and I suspect that our bath room was a bit roomier than standard. Nice thick towels, good water pressure, nice hand held shower option. Didn't like the the containers of liquid soap, shampoo and conditioner - and would at least like the option of a small bar of soap in addition to the one at the vanity. The rooms are traditionally decorated, reasonably sized with a nice TV. The rooms were well insulated and quiet, and I liked that there were two luggage racks and a nice iron.

Front staff was great with directions, quick check in, and dining recommendations. We were able to leave our car at the hotel during our tour, even though we had checked out - saving us additional city parking.

There is a bar/bistro adjacent to the lobby and this is where we had breakfast. Nice buffet - good fruit and coffee - nicely stocked.

Location is top notch - blocks away from the White House, Metro, National Mall and GWU, in a quiet, seemingly safe neighborhood. We didn't see a vast number of dining options, but enjoyed good pub style food a couple of blocks away. Had we stayed longer, we would have been a bit more adventurous.

Dear Where2go,

Thank you for posting a review on trip advisor. We are glad that our guests enjoy our hotel and the surrounding areas. We take pride in pick out nice linens that our guest can enjoy. The Gilchrist and Soames dispensers were placed in the rooms so that we can reduce the our "carbon footprint" in an effort to become a greener hotel. We do have the small amenities bottle and more soap for our guest that would prefer it.

We hope that your daughter saw a University that she like so we can hopefully see you again in the future.

Really easy to get around from this hotel. Just a couple of minutes walk to the Metro and also to bus stops. Starbucks right by the metro. Au Bon Pain and other places to eat along with a Walgreens or CVS a couple of minutes away too.
Really good sized one bedroom suite with mini kitchen. The only bad thing I could say about it was that the bathroom was a little bit dated.
Staff all friendly.
Free wifi and free computer/printer available to use.
Would definitely go back
