“Quiet and convenient”
Reviewed 10 July 2011

Stayed here for July 4th in Washington. The hotel is in a very quiet and exclusive area of Georgetown, just a block from Foggy Bottom subway station, and the Watergate hotel (has a small shopping centre there). Surrounded by beautiful old houses - it's a really nice location. We were able to walk to the Washington Monument area in about 20 minutes, and the Potomac river is nearby for jogging and walking paths. Just keep your eyes open for where you are - we found it very confusing with the diagonal New Hampshire Ave, and the fact that our hotel doesn't have a large sign.

The hotel was formerly apartments, so the rooms are very large and spacious. They are old, but our room was clean and comfortable. Ours had a kitchen attached, complete with huge fridge, range and even a dishwasher! However, for hand washing there were no dishcloths, detergent, hand towels or the like - we had to ask for them. Bed was very comfortable, air conditioning powerful, everything worked in the room. There are a few powerpoints around, but you have to hunt for them. Vending machines for water and snack foods are in the lobby, as is a computer with printer for guest use. Wireless internet is available free - we had a fast connection.

There is a guest laundry available, but note that the dryer doesn't seem to have an off switch! Good value for money, but keep an eye on your clothes, particularly if you have delicate items in there. There is an Italian restaurant attached to the hotel which was good for dinner. We didn't eat breakfast in the hotel as we bought our own food to use in our kitchen.

Staff were friendly if needed - I found them rather hands-off, but this is Washington DC where most people are like that. All-in-all we had a pleasant stay at the George Washington University Inn - it's a quiet location but very handy to subway and some stores, a spacious room and good place to stay.

Dear rizuj,

Thank you for your review on Tripadisor. Our location is one that we love. Our Foggy Bottom neighborhood is beautiful and convenient to a lot of DC's site seeing attractions. We will be going through a renovation in the future where we will be upgrade some of the items in the rooms along with the lobby. A fitness center will be added along with an additional computer for guests use.

We do hope you come back and see us the next time you are in DC we will be happy to have you stay with us again.

I stayed at the GWUInn July 3 - 8, 2011. I believe that it is one of the best values in the DC area. It is in a great location, less than 2 blocks from the Foggy Bottom Metro stop, which means that almost any area is easily accessed either by Metro or walking. There is a Safeway and CVS drug store in the Watergate complex about 2 blocks away which let me save on some of my food expenses. When I checked in on July 3, the sweet girl at the desk upgraded me from a regular room to a suite. It was bigger than my first 2 apartments--a large bedroom, bath, and huge living/dining/kitchenette. The bed mattress was very comfortable, and the cotton linens soft and cozy. I loved the liquid soap dispenser (along with the shampoo and conditioner) in the bath. The entire staff, from the doormen and housekeeper to the front desk staff were very helpful. The manager even gave me advice on where to go to see the fireworks which did not involve getting in the massive crowd on the mall.
I had read some other reviews complaining that there is no ice machine on each floor and the lobby is small, but I would rather deal with these relatively minor inconveniences and have a fantastic room than have a huge lobby and ice around the corner but have to stay in a small room.
I did not eat at the on-site restaurant, so I cannot give any opinion on that.
I had stayed at this hotel over 15 years ago when it was tha Inn at Foggy Bottom, and was a bit apprehensive when I found that it had changed owners. I am happy to report that it is even better than now than I had remembered. I will definitely stay here again when I return to DC.

We really apprecaite you taking the time to give a review of your hotel on Tripadvisor. It really makes me happy when I see that our guests enjoy our intimate hotel and staff. We pride ourselves on helping our guests in the best way we can. We switched to the dispensers in our bathrooms to reduce waste and to upgrade the products. Gilchrist and Soames is a wonderful and environmentally friend product and company.

The next time you are in DC we do hope you will stay with us again so you will see the exciting changes we will be making to improve the hotel and our guests experineces.

My sister and I stayed here July 1-4th, It is clean and the staff is helpful and friendly. We did not have hand soap in the bathroom or an iron and they brought them up within a few minutes. We had a standard room with two beds. There was a flat screen TV in the amoire, a desk with chair, and an arm chair and small table. There was an alcove right before the bathroom that contained the minifridge, microwave, and coffee machine. The Hotel is located next to George Washington University and about 2 blocks from the Foggy Bottom metro. Also the free Kennedy center van picks up and drops off from this same metro. The furnishings remind you of furniture in bygone days. The beds and pillows were very comfortable. We got the breakfast buffet included and it was great. Sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, fresh fruit, bagels, orange juice, pastries and muffins, etc. We did not use the valet parking, because we had come to DC by train. This hotel is located in a residential neighborhood (though there are also other hotels).
This is the second time we have stayed here and it did not disappoint.

Room Tip: Go to their wesite to see the deals that they have. I am on there e-mail list and got a great rate...

This place had everything we were looking for on paper, and it exceeded expectations once we stayed there. Its well priced, clean, comfortable, and in an area that is in the heart of the nicest neighborhoods in DC (we walked to all the beautiful embassies near Dupont in 10 min, walked to Georgetown in less than 15 min, and walked to the Mall in 10 min). Way better to stay here on a weekend trip than in the empty K Street and Capitol Hill office-building hubs. And, the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. They upgraded us to a suite upon arrival (under the mistaken assumption that it was our anniversary... but it made for a fun story. They even gave us a hand-written "Congrats" card and some chocolates). Cool little place, great for a pedestrian experience of DC.

Dear Y0ungish,

Thank you for you kind words about our hotel on Tripadvisor. It is always nice to see when or guests enjoy themselves and our Nation's Capitol. The front desk team was pleased to hear that you enjoyed the upgrade and chocolates for your very merry un-anniversary. They love doing that kind of stuff.

Please come by and stay with us again when ever you are in the DC area.

Sincerely,

My stay at GW Inn was ok. The rooms are large and it is a quiet hotel. Very small unairconditioned elevator. The worst thing was asking the front desk questions. We inquired about a restaurant and were told it would take 20 minutes to walk there. We walked 20 minutes and then got a taxi for a $15.00 taxi ride. Another restaurant we were told 4 blocks and it ended up being 8 or 10. It seemed in a safe neighborhood.

We are at the end of an 8 day stay in Washington D.C. and have thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the George Washington University Inn. From the moment we arrived, our stay has been great. Upon checking in we received a free upgrade to a suite, complete with kitchen and living room. So comfortable. There are 2 flat screen T.V.s, one in the living room and the other in the bedroom and all the pots and pans you could need to fix breakfast or dinner for two. The bathroom has a small closet for toiletries. The soap and lotion was replenished frequently. Even the hotel shampoo was good! And my hair is particularly sensitive to shampoos. The towels are fluffy and soft and the bed very comfortable. The room is quiet, with very little noise from the street. We are very close to the Foggy Bottom metro stop. There are restaurants within walking distance. There is also a Trader Joe's and small Safeway within walking distance as well. Great location, & courteous, helpful staff. The neighborhood is great, too, with friendly neighbors who guided us to some fabulous restaurants. We will definitely stay here again.

Dear Mariposa,

Thank you for your posting on Tripadvisor. It appears that you made us your home away from home on your eight night stay. I am happy that you were able to take advantage of our kitchenettes and some of the local grocery stores. Trader Joe's is one of my favorites. I am also glad that you enjoyed our shampoo amenities as well as our towels. Housekeeping does an excellent job to make sure that you have everything you need to make your stay more comfortable.

Please do come and stay with us again if you are ever in the DC area again!
