Reviewed 30 July 2011

-rooms well presented and clean
-hotel was excellent for those of us at George Washington Univ. And Medical Centre, walking distance 1 block
-great location for the Metro, Watergate and Kennedy centre
-staff were helpful
-resturant had an excellent menu and good value for money pre-theatre dinner 3 courses $32

Only thing I would suggest is that if there is more that one of you staying in a room make sure you all register, my wife did the booking in her name and went shopping, when I got back and my room key did not open the door they had no record of me to let me in !!!!! Even though we had registered and had 2 keys allocated. Staff sorted it out but it took time.

Finding a good rate for a weekend hotel in D.C. can be a challenge, especially during the summer tourist season, so anything under $100 can prove dicey...if the rate is good, the location is bad, or vice versa. The GW Inn, however, provides both and while you clearly are not staying a a five star hotel, our room was well appointed, clean and quiet. We've stayed several times here and found it to be a reliable choice.

It was my first trip to DC but I hope not my last and after looking for a room which was conveniently placed for the many attractions I settled on teh GWU Inn. Part of a local chain it pressed all the buttons anddid it at a reasonable price.

The advice I got before I went was 'find somewhere close to the Metro'. GWUI is about 3 minutes walk fromFoggy Bottom and with a regular service to both the Arlington and Capitol ends of town thats perfect. Expecting to use the metro quite a bit I put $20 on a ticket and after 5 days had about $2 left so thats my first tip for DC - use the Metro.

The hotelitselfis well placed and walking distace from the Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts and the Watergate Complex which houses a supermarket where you can get provisions should you want to make some food in the well appointed kitchen which I believe all rooms have. A very comfortable bed, good bathroom and the obligatory TV with a gazillion chanels make for a good stay.

Staff are helpful and able to give good advice, book cabs and generally go the extra mile to make your stay a good one. The hotel also boasts one of DC's top Italian restaurants making a quiet night in after a heavy day sight seeing an attractive option.

Also close enough to walk is the Lincoln Memorial, Reflecting Pool (sadly drained for repairs while I was there) and dont forget to take in the Einstein Memorial. The more energetic can then walk further heading East toward the Washington Monument, National Mall and even the Capitol if you want but most will opt for the metro for that trip.

Walking past Foggy Bottomtoward the White House you pass a number of good restaurants, various cuisines and for all budgets. Try the Founding Farmers on Pensylvania Ave but bookin advance because the food is so good that they get busy early. The fact they appeared on a TV food programme (Best Thing I Ever Ate - Devilish Eggs) doesnt slow their trade either.

From the GWU Inn the whole of DC is open to you. I would certainly stay there again as it offers comfort, value, convenience and it feels safe which in any new city is good.

Thanks to the staff and recomendations to you all.

Room Tip: You arent going to get great views here but thats not the reason for staying here. Higher floors are...

The hotel is very close to the Kennedy Center and the Watergate Hotel - great location. Nestled in a residential street, it has all the makings for a great hotel. Unfortunately, it feels tired...the rooms are "ok" but not great. Worn carpet, bathrooms lacking newer upgrades. The restaurant in the hotel was very good for dinner. Good service.

We got a 1 Bedroom suite with kitchenette-ideal for 3 people. Comfy and roomy. Just a block from the Foggy Bottom metro...minutes to the Nat'l Mall and other sites. Friendly staff and complimentary WiFi! The nearby Trader Joe's has great groceries. We really liked walking a few blocks to the Safeway store and CVS pharmacy at the Watergate shops for needed sundries and cold remedy. Found some delicious Italian quick food at Frecoe's also at the Watergate shops.

Room Tip: Book early if going during a holiday.

Stayed here for July 4th in Washington. The hotel is in a very quiet and exclusive area of Georgetown, just a block from Foggy Bottom subway station, and the Watergate hotel (has a small shopping centre there). Surrounded by beautiful old houses - it's a really nice location. We were able to walk to the Washington Monument area in about 20 minutes, and the Potomac river is nearby for jogging and walking paths. Just keep your eyes open for where you are - we found it very confusing with the diagonal New Hampshire Ave, and the fact that our hotel doesn't have a large sign.

The hotel was formerly apartments, so the rooms are very large and spacious. They are old, but our room was clean and comfortable. Ours had a kitchen attached, complete with huge fridge, range and even a dishwasher! However, for hand washing there were no dishcloths, detergent, hand towels or the like - we had to ask for them. Bed was very comfortable, air conditioning powerful, everything worked in the room. There are a few powerpoints around, but you have to hunt for them. Vending machines for water and snack foods are in the lobby, as is a computer with printer for guest use. Wireless internet is available free - we had a fast connection.

There is a guest laundry available, but note that the dryer doesn't seem to have an off switch! Good value for money, but keep an eye on your clothes, particularly if you have delicate items in there. There is an Italian restaurant attached to the hotel which was good for dinner. We didn't eat breakfast in the hotel as we bought our own food to use in our kitchen.

Staff were friendly if needed - I found them rather hands-off, but this is Washington DC where most people are like that. All-in-all we had a pleasant stay at the George Washington University Inn - it's a quiet location but very handy to subway and some stores, a spacious room and good place to stay.

Dear rizuj,

Thank you for your review on Tripadisor. Our location is one that we love. Our Foggy Bottom neighborhood is beautiful and convenient to a lot of DC's site seeing attractions. We will be going through a renovation in the future where we will be upgrade some of the items in the rooms along with the lobby. A fitness center will be added along with an additional computer for guests use.

We do hope you come back and see us the next time you are in DC we will be happy to have you stay with us again.
