“Great Location in Washington DC”
Reviewed 29 March 2012

I've stayed at this hotel twice now and I love it! It's a very clean hotel, close to everything I want to do in Washington. The hotel doesn't have any great amenities but it's a good value.

Room Tip: Don't stay in a room near the elevator! That's all I heard i the morning is the "ding&q...

Sure, the Harrington is in an ideal location but that doesn't make up for the old, moldy, smelly rooms. Had to stay here for a night and as soon as I was in I wanted to leave. The lobby floor smells like beer and it's all full of high school kids on their field trips.

This tourist class hotel is my favorite when visiting DC. An older building, this is very central to all the good stuff in downtown. One block from the Reagan Building (and the Capitol Steps). One block from Ford's Theater and the FBI buiiding. Three blocks to the National Museum of American History, Same to the White House. Same to the Spy Museum. Same to the Declaration of Independence. Two blocks from the Metro Center subway station. Across the street from a Planet Earth, a huge bookstore, and (a vital necessity) a wine store. The rooms, furnishings, bathrooms are older. Reasonably clean. Has both a breakfast coffee shop, including a buffet option, and a restaurant. For rooms above the sixth floor, have to exit one elevator and take a second one. Nice help at the front desk; provide local maps and a list of local eateries, from modest up. Does not have the amenities of downtown hotels, but this place is less than half the price of the other less expensive major downtown DC hotels.

the hotel is in a great location- walking to everywhere, from the white house to the capitol. We took the subway to 18th street at night (about 7 stops) , where the restaurants and bars are located. We also liked the Irish pub next to the hotel (they have big salads). We had free parking (due to a coupon) which was a little far, about 5 blocks away, so walking there was a downside. The rooms were small but the beds surprisingly comfortable. We liked that there was a refrigerator in the room and it was quiet at night. The hotel staff was helpful. The tv was old and not functioning properly. I would recommend the hotel due to the good location.

We are budget travelers and have traveled Europe and across the USA. Traveled to Washington D.C. for work and pleasure. Booked a room after checking out the reviews and location on TripAdvisor. Did not stay the night. The place looked run down from the minute we entered the lobby. Check in was pleasant, I was told we were upgraded to a larger room at no extra charge. Was given room 950.The room came with a queen bed that left room for little else. It was apparent rooms were being renovated. This was not one of them. Room in great need of help from floor to walls to bedding. The Hotel had an odor to it that may have been a result of the renovation. Did not feel safe, did not stay. Was charged for the night. Though the location can not be beat you get what you pay for, no bargain here.

I was in DC to do research at the Archives. The hotel was about a 3 block walk, and since the weather was nice most of the time, I was able to walk there each day. In fact, the hotel is within walking distance of quite a few restaurants, etc. However, the hotel is really in need of an update. I told people it was "rustic and charming" without the charming part. The bed was comfy, the room clean ... and I felt safe there. In my room by the temperature control dial, a wire, that was stapled into the wall, ran down to the floor. Cold air was coming in the window in the bathroom. During the night, I could hear what sounded like a garbage truck outside (and I was on the 8th floor), but I think it was actually the heat coming on. If you are not going to spend much time at all in your hotel room, then this is an inexpensive place to stay. If you are looking for a little more, then you'd be better off staying somewhere else. I tried out the one restaurant attached to the hotel for breakfast - nothing special, but it was open early and was convenient. Tried out the "nicer" restaurant - Harriet's I think it was - workers were very friendly, but the hamburger i had was just ok.

Probably not. I've been to HH numerous times after trying other area bargain accommodations. It's an old building and you have to accept going in that you're not going to find crystal chandeliers or towels in the shape of geese. The elevator is horrendously slow and the old buildng smells weird. Not horrible, just old. You can see several excellent tourist spots in a 2-block radius from HH and the subway is a short walk. I'd recommend eating elsewhere though as the food establishments associated with this hotel are not so good. Security is excellent, noise not a problem.

Room Tip: Lower floors would allow you to avoid the very slow elevator.
