“Very happy with this hotel”

This was a great experience. It’s a lovely hotel with a lot of character, in a beautiful location by the zoo and Rock Creek Park. The staff people I met were quite nice and seemed to enjoy working there. The pool is a treat, and the hotel restaurant had an excellent breakfast buffet. I’ve stayed in a few DC hotels – Tabard Inn, Mayflower, Palomar, Fairmont… the Omni Shoreham will be my first choice in the future.

join the select guest program before you go...it is free and gave us a free upgrade to a double queen room with a balcony view of the beautiful garden. Free juices & coffee every morning with bagel or pastry less than $4/person delivered every morning as well. Service was great! The pool was a nice touch every night as it was open until 10pm...my teenage son loved this!

look for specials with american express such as the linger longer program we took advantage of that gave us 2 free nights.

High quality linens were my luxury!

Take a walk around the neighborhood....lots of happy hour specials and Open City across the street was fun and reasonable too.

Bens Chili Bowl & Pizza Mart on U street (2 minutes drive from hotel) are "travel channel" must sees.

Been here on business several times, but this was first with family of 5 (kids 8,6,3). Was absolutely perfect choice for a DC family vacation.

PROS
1) Exceptionally kid friendly - backpack with gifts on check-in, milk and cookies first night, select guest program lets you get chocolate milk delivered to the room every morning for free (along with much needed coffee for parents). It's clearly a convention hotel geared mostly to business travel but goes out of their way to make families feel welcome.

2) Room size ranges from large to enormous (see TIPS below): We ended up with a HUGE 'standard' room with 2 queen beds and tons of space for luggage and kids to play on floor. Closet happened to be large enough to fit pack&play for 3 year old- (leave door open and it makes a great sleeping alcove.

3) GREAT POOL - I mean really, for a hotel in the center of a major city this is really something. More what you might expect from a resort hotel on the beach or Orlando- to have it n the center of DC is something else. It’s not enormous, but its big, with a great sitting area and pool bar. Every day we were there we returned to the hotel from sightseeing at about 4, hung out for 2 hours at the pool, showered and went to dinner. Seriously, the kids can take only so much museum time a day and this was a great way for all of us to end the day

4) A number of good restaurants nearby on Connecticut ave. Varied places, Italian, Middle Eastern, Thai, Indian - pretty good and reasonably priced. And for the kids a Baskin Robbins as well on that same strip.

5) Metro one block away

CONS
1) Some might say location - it’s about 3-4 miles from the mall and you will have to take the metro to go anywhere except the zoo which is a short walk. In addition, most tourist attractions will force you to switch trains at either Metro Center or L’Enfant Plaza. That being said- the actual metro ride from escalator top to escalator top almost never took longer than about 15 minutes (granted this was in peak travel time). That being said, it does start to wear on you after a while, especially if pushing a stroller.

2) COST - We happened to get an unbelievable deal as I found a really cheap rate on a somewhat shady third-party outlet and they beat it by 25% as promised in their best rate guarantee. In general though, don't expect to stay here for any less than $200/night during peak tourist season, and even that rate will usually be with special of some sort (3rd or 4th night free for example). and will often require a weekend stay. This is after all a historic AAA four start hotel with a majestic lobby, beautiful grounds, and top-notch service- and expect to pay for it. For what it’s worth this hotel is priced well among its peer elite-hotels in the city. That being said, it’s no bargain- if you are bargain hunting for a hotel go elsewhere- if you are willing to splurge within reason- it’s a great choice.

TIPS: When we checked in (about 11 AM) we were given a rady room even though check in was not until 3 or 4 PM. The room seemed big when we walked in, but when I just happened to glance at the floorplan of the hotel on the fire escape notice on the foor I realized that this was one of a relatively few number of 'small rooms' and that most rooms were bigger, some as much as twice. I went down to the reception area and asked about this and was told that yes, we were given one of the smaller rooms. When I mentioned we had 3 kids and could use space they immediately found us a larger room that was actually twice the size of what was already a generously sized room. Take home point- room size is very variable at this hotel- none are small but some are exceptionally big- if you want one, just ask.

My family stayed at the Omni Shoreham in DC from July 13 -18. It is not perhaps the most conveniently located hotel in that you have to take the Metro to go to most of the attractions, but for the price and quality, I think it is still my first choice. I made sure to join the Omni Select Guest program which gave us free internet access plus some additional perks. The first night of our stay, they provided milk and cookies for the kids and every morning, they would deliver two breakfast drinks of our choice free of charge.

The rooms were large which was nice since we had two teenagers with us. The bathroom was also a good size. The building is older, but the interiors have been upgraded nicely. The only problem we had with the room was the bathroom door - it was hard to open sometimes. Probably due to shifting in the older building.

There are convenient gift and snack shops located near the lobby and we also tried the Sunday Brunch at the Roberts restaurant in the hotel. It was very good, but expensive. For a more reasonable meal, we went across the street to the Open City restaurant. They have a wide variety in their menu and most everything we tried was good - beware the BBQ ribs - very peppery. We ate quite a few meals and late night snacks here. There are also many other restaurants right around the corner - Thai, Italian, burgers, etc. There is also a CVS pharmacy across the street where we stocked up on bottled water and other drinks.

The Metro is a couple of blocks away - near the CVS - and though hard to find at first, it was easy to use the transportation system to get anywhere we wanted to go.

I checked the Omni website and got a summer deal - buy 3 nights, get one free. For the type of hotel with the amenities, I felt the rate of about $200/night was reasonable for DC. I would return to this hotel and would recommend it to others.

I was very pleased with this hotel. Chose it after reading numerous hotel reviews on this site. As everyone says it is a quick walk to the metro. The room was a nice large size, beds comfortable, and clean. The a/c is noisy but wasn't something that I couldn't live with. The pool area was great with a bar that serves food and drinks. Neighborhood is very nice and safe. The downside is I wasn't thrilled with the restaurants. The ones on connecticut ave were dirty and we walked out after seeing a roach crawl up the wall. We also ate at city cafe? across the street. Had dinner and it was good but breakfast wasn't. Eating at the hotel is expensive but worth it after trying the outside fare.

We stayed at the Omni Shoreham for a week over the 4th of July. It was probably the best hotel I have ever stayed in, and I travel a lot for business. The service was incredible, the rooms were large (even with a walk-in closet) and the view from our room saw the Washington Monument. We are members of Omni's frequent stay program, but the staff treated everyone as though they were members of the program. This hotel is really worth the small extra it might cost (it was actually less than others on our trip). I cannot recommend this hotel enough! Stay here anytime you go to DC.

After reading reviews of this hotel, we booked a room without hesitation and anxiously awaited our long weekend to sightsee in DC. What people mean by the 'great location' is only that this hotel is very close to a Metro stop that takes you to the National Mall. What you don't realize is that you are over 3 miles away and there are a gazillion hotels in one particular block that is only 1/2 mile and where most of the restaurants, souvenir shops, coffee shops, tours begin and taxis constantly run. The Omni is so far out, it was hard finding a taxi to 'go out there' and when we did, the trip was $15 one way. Parking around the mall is impossible so you're bound to take the subway, a taxi or walk and the ONLY option from this hotel is to take the subway unless you want to spend $30 a day on a taxi while passing by all of the other great hotels you could be staying at - for cheaper too.
The Hilton, Fairmont, Westin and a gazillion others would be a better bet. Not to mention the hotel itself reeks. Sure, the lobby is fine but once we got to our room it smelled awful. The bedspread felt like it was starched and the sheets and bedding was either very, very old or made from 100-count threads and scratchy. The room smelled. The A/C unit was extremely, extremely loud. The TV didn't have a remote and when I finally got one, the buttons were old and it didn't work. I agree with the previous poster that getting a room with an adjoining room door is a bad idea. The hallways were dark and drab. The entire decor is not pretty or sophisticated - just old and tired. At the price they charge per night, you should be getting a 4+ star, but this is a solid 3 star.
Any one of these problems would have been fine, but combine all of them with a VERY unhelpful and always-annoyed staff and you have one very unhappy guest who will never recommend the Omni Shoreham. The conceirge always was busy and the front desk staff just couldn't be disturbed without having a major attitude - like they were doing you a favor? Room Service was good but the portions were very small. TV reception isn't even good - with channels very limited. All in all, a waste of our money and time.
