“Perfect Family Hotel in DC”
Reviewed 8 April 2013

I was a little nervous booking the Hotel Rouge for our family. Even though the room had bunk beds, the hotel itself seemed a little too "cool" to be appropriate for us - two 40-somethings, one 75 year old mother in law and one 5 year old boy.

We were all pleased to discover that this hotel fit us perfectly! While it could have been a bit closer to walk to the metro, the location in regards to evening restaurants was fantastic. Below are our pros and cons.

Pros
- Room size. We booked the bunk bed room which has about 500 square feet of space. It's hard to capture the size of this room by photos. As you walk in, there is a king bed and a large floor space, along with a sofa and a chair. One wall is lined by a desk with a flat-panel TV. In an alcove (separated by a curtain) you'll find bunk beds with shelving and under-bed drawers, along with another flat-panel TV. There is a small dressing area with a chest of drawers and minibar and a small, but well-laid-out bathroom.
- Staff. Much more friendly than I would have expected and definitely not the attitude I've found at some W hotels. Very helpful and kind and all with a great sense of humor.
- Bathroom amenities. Much nicer than I would have expected at this price point.
- Free WiFi. Join their In-Touch frequent guest program and get free WiFi. Awesome.
- Afternoon wine reception. Much needed after a full day of touring...

Cons
- Location. It's a bit of a far walk to the metro and would have been fine for us if my mother in law didn't have some problems walking. We took a $7 cab daily to the American History Museum, then spent the rest of the day on foot.
- Restaurant. This used to be just a hip bar, so they're light on menu choices. What we had was quite tasty.
- Minibar. We had a $10 "raid the minibar" coupon, but the coolest stuff was a bit dusty and old looking. Better to have a smaller choice that is refreshed more often.
- Drawer space. Could use one more chest of drawers in the dressing area, considering this is a room for four.

My tip - check for specials. We booked into a Travel+Leisure family special and received breakfast daily (a superb value) and free tickets to the Spy Museum.

Room Tip: Some rooms are really over-sized. These are the bunk bed rooms and the kitchenette rooms. I can'...

We stayed for 4 nights at the Rouge which is up 16th St. in DC, about 6 blocks from the White House. If you are planning a sightseeing trip, this hotel is not central to the Mall, but we found it easy to walk about 3 blocks down to the Farragut North Metro and get anywhere from there.

It's a very nice hotel, in the funky category with red (surpirise!) walls and retro styling. The rooms are large and beds comfortable and the wine hour each evening is a pleasant treat. The bathroom is not huge, but it has a sort of dressing room next to it which is great because it has a large dresser where you can dump lots of stuff.

However, I wish the Rouge had invested in more insulation between the walls. First room we had was by the ice machine - and it sounded like it was in the room with us. We asked to be moved and they quickly accommodated us. 2nd room (205) had some sort of motor going on and off somehwere in the walls, which drove us crazy. Finally got a very quiet room at the other end of the hall, which was great. At all times, the hotel was most helpful in resolving this issue. If you are noise sensitive, specify that you don't want to be near ice machines/elevators/motors.

Room Tip: Stay away from Room 205 with the weird motor in the wall. Watch out for the rooms by the ice machin...

This is not your typical hotel. And that's good. This is not your typical Kimpton hotel. And that's not quite so good. But it's not bad for what it is. Decent sized room. Fully appointed - comfortable bed; plenty of good, clean linens and pillows; great toiletries; excellent quality bath linens; diverse mini-bar. It is clear that the hotel has been renovated, but the renovation did not fully extend into the bathrooms. They were very clean but they were tiny, the water pressure in the shower was quite poor, and there was no vanity space. I would think this is a Kimpton issue rather than a Rouge issue, but I don't know their business model. Check-in was simple, the lobby is small, some of the furniture is in need of repair - which is a shame because it makes the well designed lobby feel neglected even though it was perfectly clean and in order.

This is not a family hotel. This is definitely for a younger, trendier crowd. The vibe and decore scream romance.

The staff was definitly professional and courteous, and were happy to share ideas for places to eat and things to see; which brings me to location. The location was great if you don't want to be in the hustle of downtown. Being so close to Dupont Circle was great - lots of restaurants and shops and all the really touristy stuff is just far enough away. You won't be bothered with all the random foot traffic and noise you'd get if you were just 6 blocks south. And that's a really good thing.

Room Tip: Don't bother asking for a corner room, the windows will not be in two different directions. Tip...

We had a rather poor experience at Rouge when it came to service. When we arrived, I asked the "concierge" - there actually is no official concierge, just the front desk clerk - if he could recommend and book us on a DC Night tour. He pulled out a flyer but did nothing with it, not even recommend a particular company, and instead suggested that we walk a few blocks to the Hilton and have them book it for us. Or, if we preferred, we could book it online ourselves. We were stunned at this complete failure at decent service and it did not set a great tone for the entire stay. BTW, we did walk to the Hilton and the concierge at that hotel was very gracious and booked our DC night tour even though we were not guests at that hotel! He even arranged for us to be picked up and dropped off by the tour company at our hotel which was awesome. At this time, we also requested extra pillows and to have a fish brought to our room, and we never received either.

The room was very large but the bathroom was pathetically small. There was no counter space at all and hardly any room to turn around. There were only 3 towels in the bathroom for 4 people so I had to call down for extra towels and asked for the pillows again and this time, did receive both in a timely manner.

The manager also tried to make small talk with us several times, and I understand what that is all about, but to be honest, it is not necessary and is annoying. We were either on our way out or in and not hanging out in the lobby, so it is really out of place to start chatting with us, especially when we have a taxi waiting and just want efficient service.

The room was decently priced for Cherry Blossom Festival so we were pleased with that. They were also very good at holding our luggage for us before and after check in which we appreciated.

I was very pleased with this hotel for 6 nights. The price was fair, especially considering the desirable location, close to restaurants and shopping, between downtown and Dupont Circle. It was a short 3 blocks to the metro in one direction and 4 blocks in another.

I was given an upgrade on check in, just for asking. The 9th floor room was large, clean and comfortable, and they provided a cot for my adult son free of charge. I faced 16th St., and had no problem at all with street noise.

As a Kimpton In Touch member, I received complimentary snacks from the mini bar and complimentary wi-fi during my stay. I also saw snacks in the lobby (pizza, cookies, fresh fruit) from time to time, in addition to their complimentary wine hour. The staff was professional and helpful, with a good attitude. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel, and I will stay there again.

This hotel gets good marks all around in comparison to other hotels in the same class we've stayed at.

Friendly desk staff, although they wouldn't let my wife check in while I was parking the car because it was in my name. Parking is $39 night plus taxes.

We stayed in a double queen room which was good sized (see pics). The bathroom and closet area were small (and there wasn't enough room to store clothes for two adults and two kids for our four day stay). It was nice to have a room safe and they let you take the non perishable items out of the minibar if you needed to chill other items.

Our room was on the tenth floor facing the street but the car noises were pretty mute. We didn't hear very much noise from the hall but am not sure how many rooms on our floor were occupied.

The hotel has a avant garde atmosphere. It feels like it was a former efficiency apartment building that was renovated into a hotel.

I'd stay here again when in DC. Nice selection of restaurants nearby. There's a YMCA two blocks away if you'd rather not use their somewhat small gym. The Metro isn't that close, say 1/2 mile away, or a ten min walk.

Prices were on par with other DC hotels.
