“Fun, Friendly, and Hip!”
Reviewed 24 June 2014

I really love this hotel. I have stayed here twice in the last 6 months on business and it has been fantastic each time. It is definitely a boutique hotel so don't come expecting everything to look familiar. The theme of the decor is red, black and silver and a lot of it has a kind of rock and roll element to it. For example, the terry cloth bathrobes in the closet are animal prints rather than the usual white. In general the design walks the fine line between classy and fun very nicely. I would definitely say that the target audience is adults (intimacy kits for sale in the mini-bar!) but I did see some families here too and I am sure it is fine for them too. Everything is clean and well kept. The bed was SUPER comfortable too. The staff are incredibly friendly and clearly enjoy working there.

The hotel is on the older side so there are a few minor issues (elevators are small and relatively slow). Also the wifi must be broadcast from the hallway because the signal is strongest next to the door of the room and gets worse the closer you get to the window.

TIPS: Join the Kimpton Hotels InTouch program BEFORE you book your room. This will entitle you to free wifi while you are there AND a $10 coupon towards the mini-bar or bar downstairs. If you join after you arrive, you will get the wifi only.
The hotel offers free coffee and tea in the lobby each morning and a free cocktail hour from 5-6 pm (wine and possibly a cocktail of the day - for me it was hot toddys on a cold January day and watermelon sangria on a hot June day!). These are open to all guests, regardless of InTouch member status. The whole lobby is hopping during this hour and it is a lot of fun.

Nearby: there is a Whole Foods around the corner which is a great spot to pick up any meals you might want. The Metro is a short walk away (without luggage). With luggage it feels pretty far so you might want to take a cab.

Room Tip: Both times I stayed on the 2nd floor and was quite happy there. Rooms were fine and I did not experi...

Green Features: I think they do a good job here. They do the bit with the towels (if you hang it up they won't change it out but if you leave it on the floor they will). They also have dispensers in the shower for shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner which avoids all those little plastic bottles.

Rouge was a last minute anniversary stay, and what a pleasant one it was! The red and black decor gives Rouge an art deco feel in the midst of colonial DC. Front desk staff is friendly and the rooms are huge. For a Jetsetter $90 deal, we couldn't have been more satisfied.

Location is nice, subway stop 3 blocks away. Very nice people at front desk and fast check in and out. They offer complimentary drinks in the evening. Room is spacious but bathroom is tiny. Carpet and red velvet courtains didn't feel clean.

Room Tip: don't be sacred by the red hallways. They look very cheap but bedrooms don't

Dear Carolaramosv. Thank you for your review. I am pleased that overall you enjoyed our hotel and I am sorry if our curtains seemed dirty. We clean the curtains and carpets regularly but that doesn’t mean that some may need some extra attention sometimes. Thanks for letting us know!

We got to the hotel and were warmly greeted, then we go into the unventlated, unairconditioned elevator and up to our room. We requested away from the elevator so what did we get, a handicaped room across from the elevator. Our next room was three floors up still directly across from the elevator. Had a moldy smell and then we found the air conditioner was soaking the floor and the refrigerator had malfunctioned and leaked into the cabinet. Finally in the THIRD ROOM we got a good room with dry floors. GOOD start. Next day we had a car set up to take us out to a wedding. Confirmed it before we checked in, confirmed it when we checked in, confirmed it when we went out Friday morning and confirmed it when we came back in to get ready at 1:30. Car was not there at 3:30 and the doorman said he never got the information about getting us the car. In forty years of travel I have never had this much crap happen at one place on one trip. The only redeeming features are the friendliness of the staff and the location of the property. Now, if none of this kind of thing bothers you, enjoy the great location because the neighborhood between Dupont Circle and 14th Street has great places to eat and quaint shops to enjoy. Also 15-20 minutes to the White House and the Mall.

We found the Rouge on Hotels.com and paid $126 in the heart of DC--phenomenal. The parking is steep at $42, BUT if you join the Kimpton group, they reduced the fee by half--a good thing to remember. The front staff was very friendly and clearly this is a hotel that caters to international guests, given the proximity to the White House, etc. Like many Kimptons, it is a "unique" place, but in a very good way. The lobby was packed for the free wine hour (5 to 6 pm) and the staff said they go through 35 bottles a night... It was decent wine and also had Sangria. Some olives but not food.
The room was the largest we've had in DC (just a regular room, not an upgrade). A tip worth noting: the staff said that they never give lower prices on third-party web sites than they do on their own, plus if you reserve through Kimpton, you get a $10 credit on the minibar (and the parking reduction, remember).
The exterior is pretty bland, but the rooms have splashes of color and are very clean and appear to be newly renovated. It's near Dupont Circle, with all of the restaurants in that area to chose from.
The breakfasts, by DC standards, are a great value: I had two eggs, bacon, toast and home fries for $11. The superb French roast coffee is free.
This is a tremendous find in the heart of DC, where many average hotel rooms can be $250-$300 a night in summer. We will be back and are new fans of Kimptons!

Room Tip: We were on the street side, but heard no noise, so I don't think that makes any real difference.

My 16 year old son and I stayed here from June 13-15th. The hotel staff were very nice and helpful. The rooms were clean and comfortable. I don't think I've ever stayed in a hotel room that was so quiet! The Metro, Whole Foods, CVS and plenty of other shops and restaurants are within walking distance. There's an awesome Farmers Market each Sunday http://freshfarmmarkets.org/farmers_markets/markets/dupont_circle.php on Dupont Circle! I really loved the location and I was comfortable with letting my son explore the area around the hotel on his own. I would definitely stay here again.

Hotel is v good. Quirky decor and comfortable rooms. Free wine between 5 and 6 every evening. Staff on the desk were friendly and knowledgable. The hotel is about a 15 mins walk to the White House. It's a cab ride to the Mall and the museums. Breakfast is v average though and served as a buffet which wasn't v exciting. The staff on duty at breakfast were poor. No diners near by though so it was ok for a couple of days.
