“Location and staff are the keys”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

The River Inn is a regular destination for my trips to D.C. It is an older hotel but its strength is the staff and the location. It is located close to Georgetown, with its many attractions, and within walking distance of Dupont Circle. It is in the middle of a quiet residential area but close to bus routes. The staff at this hotel is outstanding - very friendly, helpful, and responsive. The hotel has a couple of drivers on call, including MK who is a treat to travel around town with. Keith, the bartender in the lounge is always entertaining and can converse on a variety of topics.
The rooms are very spacious with kitchenettes nicely tucked away in most. In some rooms the air conditioning seems to struggle to keep up on muggy days. However, my companion on this trip said the air conditioning in his room was more than up to the task. The hotel is not top-rank in terms of facilities and some aspects are showing their age but it is good value and I will gladly return with no hesitation.

My husband and I stayed here for four nights and couldn't fault this hotel. It was so quiet and peaceful yet only five minutes walk to the metro and about fifteen minutes to Georgetown and all the restaurants and shops and bars. The staff were very friendly and our junior suite on the top floor was large and spacious. It also had a full size kitchen hidden around the corner which we didn't actually use but would be very handy for a family. I liked that we had a desk and sofa and didn't have to always sit on the bed as is the case in so many hotels with small rooms.
I can't fault this hotel really as it was a very good price for such a nice comfortable hotel.
It exceeded my expectations and I would definitely stay here again when I return to Washington.

Room Tip: The higher floors may be quieter although it is in a quiet residential street so probably they would...

Our first trip to Washington and after touring all over the US for a month, The River Inn was one of our favourite hotels of the whole trip.
Hotel is situated in a very quaint area of Foggy Bottom minutes away from Transport and selection of eateries. Upon arrival Reception staff Kiley and Will were outstanding, promptly checking us in after assisting us with our luggage out of the taxi.
As other reviewers have stated, rooms were more like apartments which were very clean, tastefully decorated and had a kitchen with fridge and tea/coffee making facilities.
Kiley's local knowledge was extremely helpful assisting us with directions to Metro(5 min walk) and monuments(15mins walk to Lincoln Memorial) as well as other points of interest.
In-house restaurant is called Dish....it was so good the first night that we returned the following night and it did not disappoint.

Thank-you to all the wonderful staff at River Inn for making us feel like we were at home.
Cheers
Happy Vegemites from Adelaide

The rooms are actually small apartments, the location is great and the staff is very helpful.
There was even a coffee bean grinder for the coffee machine!
Loved the place, but not sure about the value for money issue...

Foggy Bottom is such a lovely area, a stone's throw from Georgetown.

Dwight, who booked us in, is an absolute pleasure to deal with; he is extremely personable. Another young guy on reception whose name I didn't get ( wears Clark Kent type glasses) is also lovely to deal with, as are a couple of the women.

Housekeeping was done very well.

Our suite was spacious, reasonably priced and looked out on the Watergate building.

We had room service one night and although there was a function on at the hotel, our food was served in a timely manner, was delicious and the servings were very generous.

Sangria served in the lobby in the evenings is a nice touch, and is well made by Keith.

Dish restaurant is great. I have reviewed this separately. Keith in the bar is a wag and Ben is also nice to deal with, as is the rest of the restaurant staff. The doormen are also pleasant and very helpful.

One guy on reception ( won't name him) was rude and abrupt, the only fly in the ointment. As I said to him, hospitality is not for everyone! I spoke to Lee, the general manager about his attitude as Lee happened to be at the hotel, and felt listened to by Lee. I'm giving this hotel a 5 as everyone else was great to deal with, and we had an excellent experience overall.

Great bakery nearby called Baked and Wired; best cupcakes I've ever had.

Room Tip: Suite looking out in Watergate building was good.

This is a fabulous hotel in a nice area of DC called "Foggy Bottom". It is in the area of GWU and a short walk to Georgetown (to the north) or the National Mall (to the south). It is also just 2 blocks to the metro. The staff here are amazing and very accommodating. The room was amazing (but we did get a sweet upgrade). The bed was comfy, the room was impeccably clean and although somewhat old, the decor was nice. We had a kitchenette and separate bathroom. I cannot say enough about this hotel, fabulous and well worth it. Very happy guests!

Room Tip: They sometimes offer free "sweet" upgrades so check their website...

The River Inn is exceptional in a city of high priced chains and boutique hotels, this is a dream.
The location is off Pennsylvania Ave in a beautiful quiet neighbourhood that is walking distance to Whole Foods for provisions, the Hop on Hop off bus stop at their sister hotel on Washington Square, a nice walk to Georgetown as well as several good restaurants. If you're into it as we were, we walked from the White House back one day and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Our check in was very efficient and as I had asked for a quiet room with a view was surprised when our room was located next to the elevator but over the course of four day, never heard a thing as it is a concrete building.
The door man/bellhop was very nice and tried to get us anything we would have wanted but could not locate a luggage rack, the only downfall of this hotel.
The room is large and bright as windows line one complete wall. Ours had a queen bed, large seating area, work space and a quaint sized kitchen complete with a 2 burner stove, full size fridge, plates and utensils for two. It also comes stocked with fresh coffee beans and a grinder. Nice touch.
Housekeeping was very good as was the WiFi. Nice small restaurant/bar downstairs that seemed well used by travellers and locals. I also appreciated their treats sent for my birthday. It made it all the more special. Overall, I highly recommend.

Room Tip: Ask for quiet and view. We couldn't see any river but on the 6th floor you can see the Watergate...
