I was very pleasantly suprised with The River Inn (our stay was 9/5 & 9/6). It is located in the middle of a quiet neighborhood which is a nice escape from a day surrounded by tourists. While it is tucked away, it is only a 5 minute walk to the metro and 5-10 minutes from Georgetown. Aside from being very convenient, it was also very comfortable.

The rooms are all suite style, so it feels more homey than your standard hotel. The kitchenette came in handy, too. It was nice to have real plates and glasses for meals we brought in. (There is also a 2 burner stove and full refrigerator.) Trader Joe's is just a couple of blocks away, so if we would have stayed longer I'm sure we would have cooked a few meals.

Overall, we were VERY pleased with our stay. We got a great deal ($105 a night) and I don't think we could have found anywhere nicer for less.

Wow!! It is truly fulfilling to read such great comments. We are happy to have made your labor day enjoyable. I always find Trader Joe's very fresh and a generally enjoyable place to buy groceries. Thank you for your comments and come back and see us again!!

We stayed at the River Inn this past Labor Day weekend. We booked the "Be Parked" package that includes parking and a metro day pass. Despite some floundering at the check in, we quickly settled into our room. If you like a bit more space, including a comfie couch and arm chair, then this is a great place for you. The rooms are all suites with a full size fridge and other basic appliances. The bathroom was redone recently & quite clean, though, small. The bed was fine for my taste and the Inn relatively quiet so we slept well. My few nitpicks are that the carpet had stains, the door had scuffs, and the room could use bit more panache...mainly quibbles.

The location is very good. Georgetown is a 5-10 minute walk depending on where you're headed. The Metro is 2 blocks away, making it a better launching point than staying in Georgetown proper. The neighborhood is quiet and safe feeling.

We ate at the Inn's restaurant twice. Dinner was great. We dined at the bar and enjoyed the bartender who brought us a delightful wine and his favorite fish dishes all the while entertaining us with his fish tails. Breakfast was also good, but the menu is limited. One day we ventured out to the Four Seasons for breakfast and despite it costing $100 for bloody marys, coffee and breakfast entrees, it was truly wonderful.

One thing to note, when I received the final bill it had parking charges on it, even though it was included in our package and I confirmed we would not be charged on check in. One woman at the front desk clearly knew what was going on and promised to remove it and did. When I returned to check out there was a far less knowledgeable woman (one of the ones from our check in). Had the other woman not been present, it was clear it could have been an aggravating situation.

All in all I think the space, location, and overall solid staff makes this Inn a great value.

Thank you for your review. We are happy to hear that your stay was an enjoyable one. It is always interesting to read about the 'entertainment" in the restaurant. We apologize for the squabbles regarding your check-in and the accidental parking post on your bill. We will make note of that as to not let it happen again. Your feedback is very valuable in helping us correct these mistakes. Again we appreciate your comments and we hope to see you the next time you are in DC.

My husband and I spent four nights at the River Inn recently and I would recommend this hotel to anyone. It's small but upscale in a quiet neighborhood with lots of colorful row-houses instead of a busy downtown street. The staff are very friendly, helpful, and made us feel welcome. The hotel is about a fifteen minute walk to the Lincoln Memorial, going right past the Dept. of State, Watergate, and Kennedy Center close by. In the other direction, it is less than a five minute walk into Georgetown.

The room was clean, pretty, well arranged, and we loved the kitchen. It also had a great mirror in the bathroom and good bathroom lighting so you could actually see to put your makeup on. The restaurant had a limited menu, but the food was excellent and beautifully presented. We ate there three times and each meal was superb. Some of the best we had during our stay.

Hello there:

When one works in hospitality there is no greater compliment than reading that you were made to feel right at home. The restaurant staff will also be equally happy to hear about a guest describing their food as "superb".!! We are glad you had a great stay and we hope the next time you are in town you will stay with us. Thank you for your kind words.

Room was spaceous and very clean. Very quiet room - seldom hear any one in hall or other rooms. Small kitchen was very convenient with full size refrig, microwave, sink, and able to grind and brew fresh coffee in the mornings.
Service was very good both in the hotel and restaurant.
Restaurant was small but service and food were excellent. Menu was limited but diverse enough that most should be able to fine something.
Convenient location - 3 blocks from metro, approx. mile walk from Lincoln Mem., small sandwich shops, and small grocery within 2 blocks.
Very quiet street that was mostly residential and quiet but as said above very close to everything including Geo Wash Univ (3 blocks).

Stayed here for only 1 night but would have liked to have stayed longer. Great staff at check-in. Very large room with kitchenette. The complimentary coffee beans (grinder available in kitchen too) are a very nice touch: much better than those coffee sachets you find everywhere. Very comfortable bed. Bathroom was a bit tired but everything worked well.

Great bar staff with lots of top tips on where to go.

Would definitely stay here again.

We stayed in the River Inn during the heat wave in late July. The Hotel was cool, inviting and restful. The area was quiet and the tree lined residential street was a joy to come back to. The metro was a short distance away and we used it to move around the museums. The staff were very helpful and friendly and made us most welcome. Our room was huge with the kitchen and lounge area. The view from the window was lovely. Using Skype we were able to show our relatives what a nice place it was, they were very impressed. The Trader Joe's nearby gave us the option of eating in which was great to avoid too much fast food. We did eat at Ella's woodfired Pizza, good call. Fantastic use of the pedle cars when the heat and the museums became too much. Do it! Fantastic place DC well worth the trip.

Thank you so much for your great feedback. It is great to read phrases like "inviting" and "helpful and friendly staff". The fact that you skyped your reraltives to show them the hotel makes us very proud. I can't say I have tried Ella's but now I certainly will. Thank you again and we hope to see you soon. Best regards.

Preparing ourselves for our third trip to Washington DC, we discovered this hidden gem in a quiet backwater of DC. The hotel staff are very welcoming and very helpful. The room was great, probably the largest hotel room I have ever stayed in, with a very comfortable bed, a good couch, a flat-screen tv, kitchen - though it's not too clear (to Europeans) that the gas hob is self-igniting - and free good-speed wireless internet. The fridge was especially welcome: not being too fond of the chlorinated tap water in the DC area, we used the fridge to store mineral water. The bathroom was well appointed - big white fluffy towels - though I do have my doubts about the extra value of a 'cloudburst' showerhead, but probably that is a question of taste. There was one unfortunate misunderstanding with our bedsheets, and when you get back to the hotel after a tiring day walking around DC's museums while still being jetlagged, it was a bit irksome. However, the situation was swiftly rectified and we were met with effusive apologies that evening and all the next day. During our stay my partner made good use of the free fitness room.
Furthermore, The River Inn is just around the corner from Foggy Bottom/GWU Metro, 5 mins walk. A Trader Joe's supermarket is 1.5 blocks away, another 5 mins walk (preferable to Safeways at the Watergate Building). Georgetown is 15 mins walk away.
We warmly recommend The River Inn. We'll certainly be back, hopefully in the not too distant future.
