“what a gem!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 December 2013

I booked 1 night at State Plaza Hotel thru Hotels.com, so honestly wasn't really sure what to expect. Wasn't I pleasantly surprised! If you are looking for a spa type hotel, keep looking. If you want charm, to have your expectations exceeded, a friendly staff, this is the place for you! I thought I was booking 'a room'. I got a room, a KITCHEN and not just a bathroom, but an additional 40's style dressing room with vanity. the best word I could use to describe it is sweet! Not quite deco, but for sure a throw back in style. CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN...too boot. the staff was exceptional. My stay was during a warm early December. because they are remodeling, no a/c was available in my room, but they told me how to turn off the heat, offered to bring up a fan and the windows were able to be opened, (but not enough to make me concerned for safety!!). there is on site parking, but at an additional cost.

If I need a hotel in DC again, The State Plaza will be my first choice! Photos to follow when I get home!

We stayed here while visiting DC after a Caribbean cruise. Right from pulling up in front of the hotel, the service was excellent. The doorman was right on our bags and told us about the area and things to do in DC while we headed for the room. The room was dated, but comfortable. The kitchenette was handy and we walked everywhere. I suggest asking for a room away from the elevator as it can get loud.

My husband and I stayed here after several days in a cramped NY hotel room, and boy was it heaven! The furnishings are a bit "tired," and quirks like the headboards not being fastened and therefore being noisy every time you moved, or bleach stains on the carpet make it a bit imperfect physically, but overall it was a delightful stay. We had two queen beds and LOTS of space to stretch out - a desk, a kitchen, and a vanity area in addition to the bathroom and two beds. The kitchen was more small-apartment style than kitchenette - a nice 2-person table and decent cupboard space, full fridge. Stovetop but no oven. We ate breakfast and dinner in our room every day; it would be perfect for a young family.

The vanity area was nice - it had a large table and mirror. A nice place to lay your clothes out or house your extra toiletries or suitcases. The bathroom was 1950's tile, but a decent size.

The location was perfect and beautiful. In order to get to the museums, you cut through the park with the WWII Memorial, Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Reflecting Pool, and Washington Monument. We went in the fall and it was absolutely gorgeous. Whereas the same distance in New York was cramped, miserable, and jostling, the walk from our hotel to the museums was fresh air, open, and beautiful. Taxis were always easy right outside the door (or at the corner) - the longest we had to wait was about 8 minutes, once - all the other times were immediate.

Yeah, the kitchen was sort of a smattering of dishes and pans, but we made it work. It was fun. There is a CVS right next door (also a liquor store), and just a few blocks away there is a small market for more groceries and a few restaurants - perhaps called Columbia Plaza?

The only significant downside was the temperature control - as other reviewers have said, it seems to be dictated by the whole building, and your room control doesn't do much. It was much too warm when we were there at the end of November, and there doesn't appear to be A/C - just cool hot air. So we had our windows open the whole time, which was a pain in the morning because it was so loud out.

Overall, we loved our stay here and would come back in a heartbeat. Enough room to spread out and feel like home a bit.

Dear Jennifer D,

It was wonderful reading your review. The fact that you "loved your stay" really motivates us as employees here and we will continue to work hard to keep similar statements coming from our Guests. I'm also happy to address that we are currently dealing with some of the issues you've mentioned as we continue to renovate the hotel. The Plaza you referred to is called Columbia Plaza. You were right.

My companion and I were very happy with our stay at the State Plaza Hotel in Washington, D.C.. The staff were so friendly and accommodating, both at the desk and at the door. We had a large suite with two wonderfully comfortable double beds. We were directed to nearby markets and convenience stores, but also enjoyed a dinner at the hotel dining room after a rather grueling drive in the rain from NYC. The purpose of our trip was to visit museums and memorials at The National Mall which was within walking distance. We never had to take the car out of the garage or use public transportation to see what we came for, so we got plenty of exercise. According to AAA, even the garage rate was very reasonable for D.C. The rooms are as described in other reviews and for the great value, we would definitely stay there again.

Dear Caboom,

Thank you for taking the time to write a really nice review of the State Plaza Hotel. We're glad you found our staff friendly and accommodating to your needs and the hotel a great value. It is always a great option to be able to walk to DC sites rather that driving and have to find parking near the sites which could get very difficult in DC. We hope to see you again.

Good & quiet location, clean room, friendly staff.
Recommend the hotel to my family & friends.
The restaurant is small in size, however the staff are efficient and the food is good.
The room has a kitchenette which is useful to prepare tea & coffee.

The State Plaza is an old apartment-style hotel-- Foggy Bottom and Georgetown are full of them-- and my experience with this kind of hotel led me to expect a certain amount of scuzziness. I was pleasantly surprised to find the hotel in excellent condition, with up-to-date furnishings in good repair. Reception was friendly; maid service was competent (not outstanding); the food at the hotel restaurant (I had lunch there one day) was good and reasonably priced. One small drawback: the rooms are supposed to come with full-service kitchens, but things like detergent, dish cloths, and paper towels are furnished upon request only, and there is no microwave oven. The hotel is a ten-minute walk from the Foggy Bottom Metro.

Dear GracefulUnderFire,

It is great to read that you found our hotel in excellent condition. We apologize for the shortage of items in the kitchen area and we will make sure to address this and have the items you mentioned placed in all our kitchenettes. Microwaves are available upon request but we are close to placing one in each room permanently. Thank you for your review and we hope to see you again.

We stayed at this hotel for a conference held at the Convention Center. When we arrived at the hotel, we were a bit worried because the hotel seemed to be the only commercial establishment in that stretch of street, except for a 24-hour CVS (a blessing because food/water at the convention Center was exorbitantly expensive). The desk staff as well as the door people were unfailingly polite and conversational. A pleasure! The room was quite large with a comfortable dressing area and a bathroom where everything worked. The room, bathroom and kitchen were maintained spotlessly even though it seemed to be a bit dated. The kitchen had a dining table and chairs as well. The free WiFi was included in the price, a big bonus, because when we visited colleagues in much more expensive hotels closer to the Convention Center, wireless was charged extra per day. The night we arrived, we were too tired to find a restaurant and went to the small restaurant in the hotel, called the F Street Bistro. The food was excellent and very reasonable. The only caveat was that they charged almost $12 for my coffee (3 refills). It was quickly deducted when I pointed it out. The following night we decided to go back to the same restaurant since we were so pleased with the quality of the food (and again were charged extra for refills, and again had it deducted quickly, so check your bill carefully!). We did not have time to explore the neighborhood since we left early for the conference and came back after dark. The next time, I would want to explore the area much more.

Room Tip: Our room was on the 8th floor and very quiet.
