Stayed here for the astd conference last week. Only a 30 minute walk to mt Vernon square. Service was excellent. Value was outstanding. The only two "complaints" I have are rooms are outdated and hotel restaurant isn't very good.

We are a mature couple travelling with a group of seven friends and visiting Washington for the first time. We chose the State Plaza on the basis of TA reviews and were not disappointed.
Check-in was quick and efficient with the help of polite and friendly staff. Indeed this is a strength of the hotel---everybody we met was cheerful and helpful.
It is a bit of a sprawling building with two separate entrances and lobbies which can be confusing when your group is spread out in different areas. There is a strange walk through the car park/service area from one part of the building to the other but we managed to work it out quite quickly!
Our room was great--quite spacious with a huge comfortable king bed, nice bathroom with a nice dressing table area just off which my wife really appreciated. It was very quiet in and around the hotel--we hardly heard any noise and enjoyed some restful nights as a result.
The big plus was the kitchenette area which could be closed off with folding doors. This was a great bonus with fridge/freezer, hob, coffee maker and sufficient crockery etc for four people.
This would be brilliant for those staying more than a few days and on a budget.
We had our own breakfast there most mornings, having bought supplies from the store right next to the hotel--very convenient.
We did try the hotel breakfast on the first day but it was nothing special and not good value so the kitchenette gives you a great option.
NB---one of our friends staying in a single room did not have the kitchenette or even a fridge in the room so be careful that you get what you booked.
We did not eat dinner in the hotel so can't comment on the food or service. There are plenty of places a short bus ride away in Foggy Bottom and Circa near the metro was very nice.
The bus does actually stop virtually outside the hotel but it didn't seem to run to the timetable provided by the hotel so allow yourself extra time if using this option.
We found that the easiest way of using the buses and metro was with a smart card which you can top up as necessary. Like the Oyster card in London it saves the hassle of looking for change or using ticket machines.
The area around the hotel is pretty much all related to George Washington University and there was a nice vibe around with the students making it a good area to walk around.
Unfortunately, one of our party needed to visit the Emergency department which was handily located just near Foggy Bottom Metro station!
Overall, the State Plaza is a good base to stay at. The White House is only a 10minute walk away, as are other monuments which are easier to get to on foot rather than by public transport.
If you need a taxi, the hotel staff will call one for you and the friendly doorstaff will help with luggage and bags. We used the hotel's recommended taxi ( a comfortable sedan) for our trip back to Dulles. The quoted price was $68 dollars which is what the driver asked for so although it wasn't cheap, we weren't ripped off. The taxi arrived early and the driver was courteous and helpful which made for a smooth ride back to the airport.
We would quite happily recommend the State Plaza as a good hotel to stay at in Washington. Thank you to all the staff and keep up the good work.

My husband and I stayed while visiting Washington DC for the first time. We selected this hotel after much research into location and value. We did not have a car on this trip. There is no need for one, traffic is horrible, parking an expensive nightmare. We flew into Regan, took a cab to the hotel which was $20 one way plus tip. This was cheaper than the Super Shuttle ($14 per person), more expensive than the metro (probably $2.00 per person) but we didn’t have to haul our bags from the metro station to the hotel… well worth $20!

The hotel is in a great location and oozes charm! Everything is within walking distance…The Foggy Bottom Metro Station, the White House, National Mall, most monuments, memorials and museums. Definition of “Walking distance” can differ greatly from one person to another… so let me tell you, my husband and I are not what one would call “athletic” by any means and we made the walk to most everywhere with no problem. Visiting Washington DC you should expect lots of walking anyway. Be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes!

This hotel is located right in the middle of George Washington University Campus.

We only needed the Metro to go to the Pentagon/911 Memorial, Arlington Cemetery and FedEx Field (Washington Redskins Stadium). This trip was a first experience for us on a Metro Line. It’s an extremely easy and inexpensive way to travel around this large city.
The hotel was very clean and oozing with charm. Our room appeared to have been recently renovated. The room had a kitchen equipped with all basic cooking equipment but no oven or microwave which made it very hard to prepare easy meals. I would like to see the hotel supply at least a microwave, which is in my opinion, a basic hotel room item. Also, there are no ice machines. We were told by hotel staff to utilize the ice trays but that wasn’t enough for us. So the hotel staff brought to our room, a whole bag at no cost, which was very nice.

Our room was on the 4th floor. Our room was very clean and spacious. The bed was very comfortable. We experienced no issues with night-time noise as other reviewers mentioned to be a problem, except for our room was directly in front of the elevator and some other guests were a inconsiderate laughing and talking loudly while waiting on elevators at extremely early/late hours, but this really was not a tremendous problem and of no fault of the hotel itself.

Staff at the front desk were all very courteous and helpful. Our flight was very early, we arrived at the hotel at 8:30am. The hotel graciously stored our bags for us in a locked, secure room until our room was ready so we could begin our exploring. The staff will provide any info you need about transportation, directions and tours and can even sell tour packages to you right there.

You can buy a “Smart-Trip” metro card for $10.00 which includes $2 cost of card activation and $8 in actual travel funds. The card is refillable at the metro station or at CVS which is right next door to the hotel conveniently.

The CVS Pharmacy next door carries basic grocery items and frozen goods (which do no good without a microwave or oven). We bought snacks, bread, sandwich meats, drinks, etc. to keep in our room to help control cost of meals. Also, a short walk away, there is a Whole Foods that has coffee, a beautiful selection of breads, pastries, salad/pre-prepared foods… a full grocery store. Ask front desk staff, they will give you directions to get there. There is also a Starbucks and a Dunkin Doughnuts nearby.
We were slightly disappointed at the selection of restaurants nearby. However, “Circa” restaurant (in walking distance…. directly in front of the Foggy Bottom metro station) is a great choice, excellent food! Also, there is a liquor store right next door to the hotel as well. There is a restaurant for breakfast inside the hotel ($18 per person), we did not try it.

Overall, we were very pleased. We will definitely consider staying here again in future trips

The State Plaza Hotel was a disappointment. The location was great and the rooms are clearn, but it was always a lot of exterior noise all the time...emergency vehicles with sirens on, traffic and construction.

We stayed in the standard suite our first night there and the kitchen was minimally stocked. Most everthing else for the kitchen was upon request, including a dish towel. Finding this too small for three adults, we upgraded to luxery suite (highest) for the next two nights of our stay.
Again, the kitchen was barely stocked so that you could have cooked and again there was no dish towel.

What motivated my rating was that we never received maid service after our second night(apparently things move very slowly on the weekend) so we requested clean wash cloths, and coffee, cream sugar etc. Between the manager and housekeeping that translated to coffee, cream and sugar, toilet paper and kleenex. However, housekeeping did get it right the second time around. The staff was the saving grace were the bell hops and doormen and the reception staff.

We will not stay here again.

We stayed here on a weekend for sight seeing. Thought the room was spacious and comfortable. Totally made use of the small kitchenette for breakfast. Wish the selection of pots was better for making tea, but we made do. Got a complimentary bottle of water per person each evening, which was a nice perk. Though we did not try it, the on-site restaurant looked nice and pricing was reasonable for a hotel restaurant. Can't say enough nice things about the staff! Extremely helpful and pleasant!

Convenient to the Foggy Bottom station on the Metro (about 4 - 5 blocks) and equal distance to the Lincoln Memorial (which we did not figure out till later - darn!)

My only negative comment would be the cost of the parking. At $35/night I thought it was a bit steep. Unfortunately, most neighborhood parking is closed on weekends, so we had no choice.

Stayed here for 4 nights for a conference in DC. Location is nice as it's in George Washington University grounds and a couple of blocks from the shared bike service (great way to get around DC).

The room was okay, we had a suite with two queen beds, a separate room for the kitchen, and there was a make up room in between the main room and the bathroom -- this was kind of a weird waste of space, would have been nice if the sinks were in that room.

There was a loud humming noise from the building outside, we unplugged our fridge and turned off the air conditioning to lessen the noise, but it didn't really help since it was from some machinery outside that ran all day and night.

The housekeeping service taps loudly on all doors and you can hear them the entire morning once they start tapping down your hallway. We had the do not disturb sign up, but were disturbed even though they skipped our room. For some reason, they do not deliver your bottled water at the same time as making up your room, so if you're napping in the early evening after your room is made up, be prepared for the tapping once again for the water delivery.

The elevator was a bit slow so we ended up taking the stairs most days.

There are two buildings with similar looking lobbies, one on E street and the other on F street. It's a bit of a trek if you check in on E street and have your room in the other building. You also need to bring your bags up the stairs to get to the lobby and up another flight of stairs to get to the elevator in both buildings, so I wouldn't call this a very accessible building.

Staff were pleasant but don't go out of their way to assist you with anything. Laundry needs to be brought down to front desk, simply leaving your clothes in the laundry bag, hanging it on the front door and filling out the paper won't get you anywhere -- and the instructions aren't clear.

Decent hotel for the price, but I think I would rather stay at the Marriott Courtyard around the corner next time I'm in town.

This hotel is actually a converted apartment building. We stayed in #701 which was essentially a 1 bdrm apartment with a full kitchen, very big, very clean and well maintained albeit a bit aged.
Also their Bistro Restaurant was EXCELLENT, food was very inexpensive and the service was very good......JimU
