We chose the Carlyle after looking through several options in the Gay-friendly area of Dupont Circle. For the price, I expected something nice, but small. We were pleasantly surprised to find a generously sized room. The layout of our King suite helped us each to have our own space. The small kitchenette was another bonus.
The location was perfect for our interests: A short walk got us to the metro, which took use to Gallaudet University and (in another direction) the monuments, museums, etc. We drove into DC, and realized that it would have been smart had we reviewed the area map before getting into the area. Dupont Circle is dense with intersecting roads, and I often made turns either too soon or late.
Given the congestion in the area, I was glad that The Carlyle had on-site parking. It's a steep $39/night (charged to the room), but the parking is directly behind the hotel. We had access to my car at all times, and the attendants carefully placed cones around the car to avoid damage. In the end, I would rather pay $39 than find a spot myself!
We were there the day the hotel began putting up their holiday decorations, which were very nice. The lobby is not large - but who's there for the lobby? The lobby is efficient and well-appointed.
We enjoyed the bar and the food - although it was pricey. It would have been just as easy to walk to a local grocery and fill up the refrigerator in our suite. With two burners, a microwave and a Kuireg, you can take care of your own meal needs. There are a minimal supply of cooking utensils, plates, glasses and cups. We had dinners at the bar. We enjoyed the food, and the friendly bar tenders. We like the ambiance at the bar, more than in the adjoining restaurant. The restaurant space could use a bit of updating. The restaurant is run separately from the hotel. The drinks were smooth!
We arrived after a long drive, and the bellman and lobby staff helped us manage our check-in and unpacking our car with ease.
The local community is completely walkable. The train station is not far. It doesn't make sense to use a car in the area, except to arrive and leave.
The value is amazing, given the location and amenities!
