A young and enthusiastic staff at this slightly offbeat Kimpton Hotel, right by Dupont Circle, made this into a very pleasant stay; however don't be surprised if the same guy who checks you in at the front counter also turns out to be the car valet, room service waiter and all-around concierge!
We loved our room; it was spacious, peaceful (in back, away from the street) and had a big-screen TV, comfy and clean bed and nice, modern furnishings. However, the bathroom was so tiny, it was hard to close the door while using the toilet, the sink was outside by the closet, and when we requested extra blankets one night, it took 30 minutes because one of the two staff members downstairs was valeting cars.
That said, our attractive and comfy room was a delight to return to in the evening; a real oasis, after long days spent traipsing around the city.
Great location, right by Dupont Circle -- easy access to the Metro. Also, one of the hotel staff recommended a Capital Bicycles stand (right in the Circle) that allowed us to rent big red bicycles with a credit card and cruise down to the Mall (one glitch is returning the bikes, as there are a limited number of docking stations at each location around D.C., and if a location is full, you either have to ride to a new location, or keep paying for your rental until someone frees up a slot).
Had dinner at Firefly one night in the hotel; we got a kick out of the bustling ambiance and fairy-tale decor, but the food was just so-so. I'd recommend it for happy hour.
Favorite thing about the Madera; iced orange-slice water in the lobby. And just a few minor gripes; wireless service was a bit dicey, the expensive, overnight "garage" turned out to be an outdoor spot in back, by the dumpsters; and we were billed over $20 for items from the honor bar, even though we only used it to store some store-bought juice and fruit (the charge was removed immediately when we spotted it).
When all is said and done, we'd definitely stay here again. Not necessarily a "top ten on our list" hotel; but it served its purpose, was homey, clean and relaxed, the staff are very friendly and personable, and we liked it very much.
