“Quirky but I liked it.”
Reviewed 5 May 2011

A young and enthusiastic staff at this slightly offbeat Kimpton Hotel, right by Dupont Circle, made this into a very pleasant stay; however don't be surprised if the same guy who checks you in at the front counter also turns out to be the car valet, room service waiter and all-around concierge!

We loved our room; it was spacious, peaceful (in back, away from the street) and had a big-screen TV, comfy and clean bed and nice, modern furnishings. However, the bathroom was so tiny, it was hard to close the door while using the toilet, the sink was outside by the closet, and when we requested extra blankets one night, it took 30 minutes because one of the two staff members downstairs was valeting cars.

That said, our attractive and comfy room was a delight to return to in the evening; a real oasis, after long days spent traipsing around the city.

Great location, right by Dupont Circle -- easy access to the Metro. Also, one of the hotel staff recommended a Capital Bicycles stand (right in the Circle) that allowed us to rent big red bicycles with a credit card and cruise down to the Mall (one glitch is returning the bikes, as there are a limited number of docking stations at each location around D.C., and if a location is full, you either have to ride to a new location, or keep paying for your rental until someone frees up a slot).

Had dinner at Firefly one night in the hotel; we got a kick out of the bustling ambiance and fairy-tale decor, but the food was just so-so. I'd recommend it for happy hour.

Favorite thing about the Madera; iced orange-slice water in the lobby. And just a few minor gripes; wireless service was a bit dicey, the expensive, overnight "garage" turned out to be an outdoor spot in back, by the dumpsters; and we were billed over $20 for items from the honor bar, even though we only used it to store some store-bought juice and fruit (the charge was removed immediately when we spotted it).

When all is said and done, we'd definitely stay here again. Not necessarily a "top ten on our list" hotel; but it served its purpose, was homey, clean and relaxed, the staff are very friendly and personable, and we liked it very much.

Room Tip: If you like quiet, request the back; nice view.

Simply, excellent service all around from all staff. The funky decor was refreshing and intriging -- nice departure from some other hotels with less personality. The best meals I had during the week (and I had plenty at other places) were at FireFly - directly connected to hotel.

We have just stayed at Hotel Madera for 9 nights. We are very surprised about the huge room and loved to have a balcony for ourselves. It will be great if they have chairs there. Loved the hotel staff, they are very friendly and always helpful. Will for sure coming back if we visit DC again. Great experience.

Room Tip: perhaps try and ask to stay at the higher floor.

My husband and I needed a break from our daily routine in Texas so we took a trip to D.C.. After reading reviews on different websites we chose Hotel Madera for us, and it was the right choice. Upon arrival we were greeted by friendly staff members which gave us a right at home feel. Our room was clean and spacious. The location was outstanding being a block from the Dupont Circle and a short walk to Georgetown. Breakfast was delicious but just a bit pricey. Only con about the hotel is parking, valet is readily available but can get pricey really fast. Overall we will be staying at Hotel Madera for our future DC trips and we will be recommending it to our friends and family as well.

Just returned from a couple of days in DC. I looked a reasonably priced hotel in a good location and was so very surprised at my stay at the Madera.
A wonderful, wonderful experience at a great price, in a great location, in a wonderful room (albeit with a slightly small bathroom) in a lovely hotel but most notable by being staffed by extraordinarily warm and caring people.

Room Tip: Join the Kimpton InTouch program.

Stayed at the Hotel Madera while visiting our daughter at GWU. It's a short hike from campus but super convenient to Dupont Circle with its many great restaurants. The hotel staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Our room was huge and very quiet with a nice, comfy bed. The bathroom area was small, but the shower had great water pressure! We also received a very reasonable pay-in-advance rate which made the Hotel Madera an exceptional value. We would definitely stay there again and recommend it highly to others.

My husband and I were in town for the weekend visiting friends with our boxer --- we used to live in DC. The minute we walked in the staff was welcoming us and our dog and I had a glass of wine in hand! The atmosphere was very genuine. The rooms are very big --- I used to travel a lot for work so I was pretty amazed .. and they are right next to Dupont circle and a short walk up M street to Georgetown. I loved everything about the hotel. Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to go to the Firefly (adjoining restaurant + bar) but I plan on going there on my next stay in DC @ Hotel Madera.
