“The biggest hotel room in the world”
Reviewed 11 July 2012

But oddly laid out.

It was (literally) 13 steps from the door to the window, so there was plenty of space, but the bathroom area was beyond tiny -- really small toilet/shower closet and a such a low ceiling in the sink area that the mirror gave me a lovely view of my neck and upper torso.

That said, it was a great experience. We were upgraded to a "tranquility" room, which meant that we had a reclining massage chair that was hard to leave. Very comfortable bed, huge room, great view. Very friendly and helpful staff (as seems to be the case in all Kimpton hotels).

My one caveat (and this relates to the area more than to the hotel) is that if you're looking for a late-night meal, you're out of luck. I wandered all over Dupont Circle trying to find someplace to eat before finding a (fortunately very, very good) gyro place more or less around the corner (and across the street from the Hotel Palomar (where we'd stayed the week before and which offers 24-hour room service; I was almost tempted to go in, say I'd been there, was staying around the corner, and could I pretend I was still checked in so I could order room service ...).

Regardless, a great, great experience, and I'd happily stay there again.

Hello dsikula, it's wonderful to hear you had a great experience at the Madera. The tranquility room you were upgraded to is definately relaxing with the massage chair. Definately very nice to use after a long day of meetings or sight seeing. While it is true that Dupont Circle does not offer a lot of options for late night dining there are a few hidden spots we can recommend on your next visit. Thanks for the review, Modi Ahmed General Manager

This was the first time I have stayed at a Kimpton hotel and the experience was extremely positive. All levels of service: from the decor and cleanliness of the room, to the prompt room service and helpful staff were excellent. Location was terrific. I would stay in this hotel again as well as consider Kimpton hotels in other locations.

Kimpton comes through again. The Madera is a solid choice in a great location.

The location is terrific. It is right off Dupont Circle, close to the Metro, Connecticut Avenue, and many food, drink and drug store options. The street is pretty, with a nice view in front of the leafy streets and Egyptian embassy across the way. Georgetown is a long but direct walk, or you can take the DC Circulator from two blocks away.

The lobby is certainly too small. Kimpton should expand it to provide more seating and a larger front desk (often there was only one employee around who was busy). But the lobby is fine for a short break.

The room was very comfortable. The bed and furniture were good (though the sofa needed more pillows). The room was big, while the bathroom was too small. (There was a separate sink/mirror area outside of a tiny shower/toilet room.) The overall ambiance was cozy, and we felt very happy to return to the room each day during the incredible July 4 week heat wave. The a/c worked great in our room and the lobby, but there was no a/c in the elevators or our room's floor.

The Firefly restaurant was a disappointment. It is very popular, but our one meal -- breakfast -- was not so great. It could use some improvement. For breakfast, better to try P St. (Pain Quotidien, etc.).

There is no gym, but evidently you can use the one at Kimpton's Palomar on P St. (we stopped in the lobby there, and that was more impressive).

Check out Kramerbooks and Kebabji on Connecticut. Also try Peri Peri and The Daily Grill on 18th St. below Dupont Circle. There are also some good restaurants on 18th and 17th Sts. north of the circle.

The Madera was spot on, and we would stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade to a balcony room in front (you might want to join Kimpton's member club, whi...

Hello FlySwim, thanks for writing such a great review. I am ecstatic to hear you would stay with us again when you visit Washington. Loyal guests mean so much to us. My sincerest apologies your breakfast in Firefly was disappointing. I will communicate your feedback to the Firefly Team. It's the most important meal of the day we need to get it right. Thanks again for the review and we can't wait for your return. Sincerely, Modi Ahmed General Manager

We decided on a Kimpton hotel due to the novelty of an earlier first visit to one in Baltimore, when visiting our teenage daughter who is doing an internship in DC. My wife and I and two other daughters checked in on a Friday and stayed until Sunday. This is an overall decent hotel a heathy walking distance from the George Washington University Halls of residence where our daughter is staying. Also not too far from Georgetown, if you fancy a decent bit if exercise.

The good:
1.The Doorman (I believe he is from Ghana) ranks as one of the most pleasant folks on the planet; genuinely like-able and helpful. He gave me a vital tip on parking, which is the major weakness of this hotel (see below).
2. The location: on a pleasant tree-lined avenue off of Dupont circle, close to the metro and with lots of nice restaurants nearby.
3. The happy hour, from 5 to 6pm daily, with Sangria to die for.

The not-so-good:
1. PARKING!!! Costs $41.00 plus tax per night to park in the hotel's parking garage. This is the highest ever parking fee I have experienced in my entire life....more expensive that the myriad of upscale Manhattan, Honolulu, or San Francisco hotels I have stayed in!
2. Room-too small!
3. Bathroom -too cramped
4. Front desk...well there really isn't a decent sized front desk; just a cramped itty-bitty space for check-in and check-out that rubs shoulders with the happy hour area situated right at the main entrance to the hotel. Quaint? Yes. Unusual. Perhaps. Certainly leaves a little to be desired.

Unfortunately we did not use the restaurant (FIREFLY) which has an apparently pristine reputation, due to less expensive options nearby, but lots of people seemed to love it. We forfeited our included breakfast as we opted to have brunch elsewhere in the vicinity at the behest of my daughter.

All-in-all a decent hotel with friendly staff and a pleasant decor. A little cramped though. Still I'd recommend it unreservedly.

Pickydoc, what wonderful feedback! The doorman you spoke to was Maurice. He is a wonderful asset to our Hotel and Guests. I truly appreciate your feedback about the parking rates and layout of the rooms and desk. The parking rate is competitive with other Hotels in the area, and we also offer discounted rates for hybrid cars and certain reservation packages. Our rooms sizes due vary slightly but we will try our best to ensure on your next visit we can get you something more comfortable for you. Also, admitttedly the Front Desk is small, but we feel size doesnt matter. The smaller lobby gives us the ability to provide a warm, personalized level of service. Thanks again for the review and we do hope to see you again, Modi Ahmed General Manager

It's very nice to be near Dupont Circle and this is a very comfortable place to be. The street is quiet, the staff is very helpful, and the rooms are quite nice but not lavish.

We might never have discovered this gem had it not been for the week-long power outage that crippled so many households at our home base. Demand for air-conditioning and heat-rescue drove the prices of many hotels through our already damaged roofs, but not so here, and kudos to the Madera and the Kimpton group for its care and sensitivity. Many reviewer comments are accurate. Rooms tend to be on the small side, but they are certainly big enough to satisfy. They are well-appointed, comfortable, and if you travel with rechargeable necessities, like computers (we needed to transfer our work base), there are outlets galore - and they aren't hiding behind furniture or curtains. Hotel staff "apologized" for putting us at the "back" of the hotel, but our skyline surged over the Cathedral and Georgetown University. (Front rooms have small balconies but you have to be a bit masochistic to use them in DC summers. Even our dog runs inside as soon as he can.) Bathrooms are tight, but ours had its sink in an enclosure outside, leaving only the business end behind closed doors. The staff is fantastic, and the help that Aaron, Denise and Raymond offered - in service and sympathy toward its many weather refugees - was above and beyond. (When we finally got home, the hotel sent an email to check-up on our well-being.) The restaurant is a DC highlight, but its breakfast choices are not extensive. Like the rest of the hotel, they are more than good enough. They are priced competitively, but, since the hotel is at Dupont Circle, there are more than enough alternatives. In sum, if you want to spend some days with a new family, stay here.

Dear serioustraveler7612, it seems we have the summer power outage of 2012 to thank for bringing you to the Madera. Thank you summer storms!
