“Reasonably priced, but don't expect the bells and whistles of a bigger hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2014

Staff is friendly, but hotel is small and of the boutique style. There is one person when you check in and that person checks you, carries your bag up the stairs to the elevator, sets your morning wake up (which is delivered by a person and not an automated system) and helps get a cab, etc. So, you need to appreciate that there could be a wait. Coffee and tea in the lobby, but some of the rooms don't have the best views (the rooms on the back side furthest from the street overlooks the parking lot, and while I was there a dumpster. Also, during the middle of the summer heat, our air conditioning was shut down for repair at 4 a.m. I didn't get the note that others did, and woke up at 6 in a sweat.

Room Tip: I would suggest a higher floor near the front. I have heard the crowd from the restaurant on the fi...

Cuteesq! Thank for pointing out our love of personalizing guest interactions such as a human wake up call rather than a machine recording. Our small boutique size allows us to create more memories for the guests. I apologize you did not receive the best view the last time you were here. The back of our building looks more towards georgetown and the front towards the dupont area. Earlier in the summer we were repairing the ac for unavoidable routine maintenance. I can imagine how uncomfortable you must have felt when you did not receive the letter. We will make sure to better communicate in the future. Have a cool rest of summer and please come back in the fall! Regards, John Esainko, General Manager

I have a very good idea of this hotel after spending one week, and staying in three different rooms. The room changes were due to a malfunction in the air conditioning. Not a very pleasant experience when the temps topped 95 degrees. Still, I give this hotel high marks because staff were totally accommodating and sympathetic to my needs to find a cooler room. The rooms are nice and large. Rooms on the east side have balconies, and they were clean. Still, it was the service that stood out above other experiences I have had in DC, and gives this place high marks for me. The people were simply very nice and very attentive. if you are looking for a place that has nice sized rooms, a balcony, is clean and comfortable, and close to Dupont Circle and the Metro, then this is your place. If you are looking for a place with an outsized reception area, and capped bell hops, look elsewhere. This is a comfortable and friendly place.

Room Tip: The hotel is small - and the ice machine is loud - my recommendation - stay off the 3rd floor.

Green Features: Standard practice - asks people to hold off on them washing their towels. The have bath jell, shampoo and conditioner in large containers attached to the tub so that they do not waste packaging.

Jazger, You hit the nail on the head! Friendliness and Comfort is what we are all about. We love our large rooms and believe our staff is one of the best! Being able to feel at home in a big city is a unique experience not to be forgotten. I'm so sorry you had issues with our AC and are throughly looking into this to make sure the rest of the summer is a lot cooler. I'm so happy our staff was able to leave you with a good impression. I've stayed at Hotel Madera when I'm in DC on business several times, and it's a great option. The location is ideal- near Dupont Circle but not right in it, close to lots of restaurants and bars, and about 4 blocks from the metro. The staff is always very friendly and go out of their way to make you comfortable. The rooms are fine, though the bathrooms are a bit on the small side. For just a one or two night stay, though, they are fine. I also appreciate Kimpton's "green" features, like recycling bins in every room and shower-mounted shampoo and shower gel. I do wish there were coffee makers in the rooms and not just down in the lobby. Sometimes you don't want to get dressed to go downstairs to get coffee first thing! All in all, though, I like the Hotel Madera and will definitely stay here again when I'm in DC for work.

I assumed this would be a good hotel, because we had stayed in another Kimpton Hotel in Alexandria, Virginia, which was great. But our room at the Madera was even BETTER. The service at the Madera was even BETTER. And the location was even BETTER. Our room was surprisingly large, with a balcony. The concierge and bellhops were very friendly. And we could easily walk around Dupont Circle, which was delightful. We were pleasantly surprised one night, when a marching band played in the Dupont Circle park. The hotel was also great for us because our daughter's new college, American University, was a short ride away.

Room Tip: We loved the room with a balcony.

I really enjoy Kimpton's hotels -- a good mix of great service, large rooms, and a warm/friendly atmosphere. The Madera hits those marks, but the physical plant is really lacking.

First, its an old building with basically no lobby at all. However, the location on NH Ave and N Street is good -- 5 min walk to DuPont Circle.

Rooms are very large, which is nice. Very clean, with a balcony as well. But the rooms are not up to Kimpton's usual standards -- old, dated, and not with the modern touch Kimpton is known for. Bed was comfortable with good pillow selection -- all good there. Work desk was fine and wifi is free if you sign up to get emails from Kimpton, basically.

Bathroom is absurdly tiny and dated -- this needs a refresh. Hallways were dark and also need updating. Old elevators as well.

No gym at all -- need to walk 7-8 min over to the Palomar for that. Ok, but then you also see how the Palomar is about 10x nicer than the Madera too. The restaurant next door/attached is nice and recommended.

Service, as always, was great.

For a brief stay, the Madera is fine, if the price is right. I can't see giving this a 4 star rating.

Dear Dmorris12, Thanks for taking the time to fill out such a lengthy review. I am sorry that the physical property did not live up to your expectations but it sounds like our service hit home. As a small property we are better able to interract with our guests creating a better feeling of home than a large property will. We also love our location being able to fall out of bed and land in Dupont Circle! We will continue to work on improving our physical property and will acknowledge our staff for all their hard work! All the best,

Kimpton Hotels are a boutique hotel that we love. They are our favorite, favorite hotel chain and we are members of their loyalty club. This particular location is not equal to the other 6 locations that we have stayed in. We will continue to stay at Kimpton but won't be back to this location. The customer service was excellent as always.

I thoroughly enjoyed my recent stay at the Hotel Madera in Washington D.C. Very comfortable rooms in a quiet area of D.C. (but decently proximal to the metro). This is a smaller Kimpton hotel. One of the real perks of the hotel is the fantastic restaurant that it shares spaces with; in summer the windows that stretch across the front are opened to create a great indoor-outdoor environment.

It is in an older building and one of the most significant downsides is the ultra-slow elevators - I never failed to wait several minutes for a ride. The older building has some upgrades, but mostly looks its age and the hallways could use a bit of an update.

Very nice, friendly staff.

I'd give this one a solid 4.5 stars and would definitely consider coming back again.

Thanks BlueBear92! We are huge fans of our restaurant Firelfy as well! The best is dining there pretending you are in a forest. We also value our location just a two block walk to the metro. Our small size allows us to have one one one fun with our guests! We hope to have you back in the future!
