I've stayed in the Jefferson, Mandarin Oriental, the Monaco and many other DC hotels. The Hay Adams has one thing the other's don't--a view of the White House in winter that is so majestic you may wonder if it's real. You will, however, pay for the privilege of looking at it. Our suite was was a junior suite, which means one fairly large room, and it was in the $800 range. The suite has a magnificent coffered ceiling with Romanesque and Baroque carvings painted ivory. Clearly it has been there for a long time, maintained impeccably. The fireplace is not working but it's carvings too are exquisite. The bathroom is not the top of the line you'll find at the newly remodeled Jefferson, but this is a historic hotel whose management has obviously decided to err on the side of preservation. That said, the bathroom while small is meticulously appointed. Onto the bed. It's sumptuous. The linens are so radically comfortable it's hard to rise out of it in the morning.
A few thoughts on room service. The breakfast is far above the usual in quality, and the kitchen and wait staff are the most accommodating I've encountered. The dinner menu could use some sprucing up -- not as many choices as I would have liked, but what did arrive was excellent.
Yes, there's a little bit of noise from other rooms, and the various protesters in Lafayette Park, but nothing unendurable. Yes, they lack a gift shop, but who really buys anything in them anyway? The lobby is staid, never lively, but there's a stateliness to the entrance that's unforgettable.

We have had the absolute pleasure of choosing to spending three vacations at the lovely and historic Hay Adams. We chose each time to have a room that overlooked the White House. The staff is incredibly accommodating, and informative about the DC area. They had the graces to place a beautiful white chocolate plate in our room with accompanying mg. note thanking us for our subsequent returns (this is always a very smart, and appreciated). Walking in the area is very easy and you can access all of the Smithsonian's, Mall with complete ease. They offer a lovely car service to offer drives to Georgetown and evening Restaurants (the area changes a bit after dark).

The concierge, who I believe is a member of Les Clefs d'Or, Jack, was a master of his trade. He was very straight forward and gave his honest opinion on options for our visit.

The staff of The Hay-Adams is multi-cultural and make it even more interesting to visit the hotel. You might even learn information about a different country if you take the time to inquire. They knew the name of each guest, and greeted you both coming and going.

Breakfast in the Lafayette was quite scrumptious, and diligently attended by the wait staff. The restaurant is frequented by DC politicians, and diplomats from all over the world.

I highly recommend The Hay-Adams Hotel for a historical vacation to our Nations Capital.

I would highly recommend The Hay-Adams for

Room Tip: Ask for a room that faces the White house for a view you will never forget!!

The only faults with the Hay Adams are the ageing rooms and lack of sound insulation which can interrupt sleep. It is stunningly positioned across from the White House (Obama stayed here for two weeks prior to his inauguration) and the service is the best I have encountered in the USA. Room pricing is quite competitive and Breakfast in the hotel restaurant is also a treat (try the fresh berries and Belgian waffle).

We chose to spend New Years Eve and our anniversary at this hotel and what a magnificent experience. The hotel is beauiful and wonderfully appointed. The staff is amazingly friendly and attentive to all of our needs and then some (At the restuarant which was excellent but pricey, they asked if I wanted a dark cloth napkin since a white cloth may leave white fibers on my dark slacks). Our room was the least costly with a view on the next building. The rates go up as the view inproves--of a church steeple or the White House--very expensive The bathrooms are marble covered with beautiful bass fittings. Our room had a large wonderful shower with two types of sprays--I do prefer a tub--so ask for a room with a tub if you so wish. The CD's in the room which run on the Bose system were restful. The restaurant was excellent- but pricey. The mattress was new, thick and unbelieveably comfortable--the linens of the best quality.

What a wonderful way to relax and feel indulged. If you haved themoney, this place is a treat!!

Room Tip: If you want a tub, ask for such a room. if you want a view, ask for one--it can get exoensive.

The quality justifies the expense. Although the room we had was small, it was one of two per floor with a handsome bay window--and a view to the Old Executive Office Building. The space is efficiently and elegantly designed in warm, neutral tones, and all appointments and furnishings are of high quality--down to the Asprey amenities in the bathroom. Everybody on the staff--from the doormen to the receptionist--was extremely friendly and courteous. Had there been a coffee maker in the room or machine available elsewhere (we reluctantly ordered from room service, and it was presented beautifully) and had the Bose docking station not failed to work with my iPod, the experience would have been perfect.

We had one night in town before heading out to the Maryland burbs for a wedding, and wanted to stay right in the middle of things. The Hay-Adams did not disappoint--what a great location! Service was top-notch, property is traditional and very beautiful. Room was gorgeous and while small by modern standards, I actually found it quite roomy for an urban property and for a historic hotel. Bathroom was very nice indeed--I really liked the bath products :)

Breakfast in The Lafayette, while pricey, was still quite a treat. Beautiful room and EXCELLENT service.

Would stay here again in a heartbeat; was sad we had to leave after only one night!

I chose this hotel because it is the closest to the White House and we only had 2 days to visit Washington DC. It was a real treat to stay in such a luxury hotel. Rooms were spacious, the beds were incredibly comfortable and the whole ambiance was one of elegant sophistication. The concierge Jack was a gem and helped us with restaurant reservations and an amazing 4 hour private tour of DC. I guess the highlight was stepping outside of the hotel and walking across the road to the White House gardens.
