Went with husband and grown daughter and had 2 separate but adjacent rooms. Rooms were very comfortable. Service in the Cafe du Parc was excellent and the food was quite good--not quite excellent by comparison to NY restaurants. Lobby was lovely, and location was excellent. In good weather a lot of walking could be done. Price was not cheap nor was it expected to be.

Room Tip: Probably want to look out to the south for view, but the doorman's taxi whistle may bother some.

There seems to be a variety of different comments about this property - all I can tell you is to ask for room 944 and attached suite - so nice as comfortable, great to have lots of room - no pay TV movie option, but they have free hbo. Staff are great. It's an old hotel so expect smaller elevators, smaller public areas like the bar, but just think about all the famous people that have stayed here and relax .... It's a neat special place. Parking is $45 overnight, so leave the car at home - the metro is a block or so away and you can walk to the White House in 5 minutes, .. It's a pleasure to stay in this wonderful classic hotel.

My husband and I live about 2 hours from D.C. and make it a point to visit for a couple of nights every year or so. We've stayed at many nice hotels in the area, and the Willard is now one of my favorites. The lobby is grand and beautiful and yet still cozy and charming. I agree with other reviewers - the front desk staff is outstanding. The woman who checked us in was genuinely interested in where we were from and how traffic was (awful as always). We were upgraded to a beautiful (and huge) oval suite with a large oval shaped living room - fitting given the proximity to the White House. My very minor complaint would be that there were long hairs left on the bathroom floor when we arrived to the room, but the rest of the room was very clean and the little touches, like housekeeping leaving light, classical music playing on the radios, make for a wonderful experience. The gym is fairly small for a large hotel, but it is well-equipped and the spa staff could not have been friendlier. Overall, this is a very historic hotel with management and staff that still go above and beyond to make it a special experience.

Our second stay at the Willard, if possible even better than the first! We always travel for Christmas, last year we were in London and this year we decided to stay closer to home (we live in northern VA.). After a great time here in May we trusted we would have a terrific stay again, and we were right. We requested an upgrade at check in and were given an executive suite for a VERY small extra charge. There were 4 of us, including our 22 year old daughter and 8 year old son so having the extra room made the trip. So did having a drink each night in the Round Robin Bar and the amazing decorations everywhere. Housekeeping was so terrific, even cleaning our room at 4pm one day although we told them they did not have to because of the time. Can not wait to go back!

Was looking forward to this place and it is a bit of a disappointment to be truthful. We got a twin instead of the double we had asked for when booking. The rooms are a little tired and need a bit of TLC. Look elsewhere for a drink as the capacity of the bars is a joke for a place this size - personally I rarely take a drink in the lobby while at home so do not quite see why I should in this place. Breakfast isn't up to much and located in an awful cafe-type place. From the blurb I was expecting good things here - not up to scratch. Maybe living on former glory?

PatrickBirchall, General Manager at Willard InterContinental Washington, responded to this reviewResponded 6 January 2014

Thank you for taking the time to write this review and for choosing to stay at the Willard. We recently completed the second phase of our guestroom renovations at the beginning of 2012 and recently topped it off with installing new state of the art LED televisions, coffee machines, scales, charge ports, along with installing an upgraded internet bandwidth. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day; we will continue to vary it and enhance it to ensure our guests start their days off with their favorite dishes. Our two bars do sometimes get crowed as they are a locals favorite (even busier during the holiday season when so many come to take a peep at our holiday decoration). So sorry we did not give you your beverage of choice in the comfort of the bar. I would be delighted to further understand our shortcoming. Please do let me know how I can contact you at patrick.birchall@ihg.com as we continue to invest in ways of improving the hotel. We hope to be able to greet you back in the near future.

Sincerely,

Patrick Birchall
General Manager
