The Bois Brule River, WI and the Brule River Canoe rental were wonderful. My husband and I were very pleased with the service at the Canoe rental place - it should be mentioned that the office staff does not always answer the phone when you call mainly because I think they are out in the field. With the rental service, we especially appreciate the fact that you do not have to wait for shuttles to pick you up at the end of your journey. You simply pull the boats up at the landings, jump in your car and go which is very nice when you've been paddling all day! The River itself is wonderful - I highly recommend the portion of the river that empties into Lake Superior. A steady downhill paddle with lots of riffles - a fun ride.

Brule River Canoe rental was a great help in getting me to experience the Bois Brule. Friendly staff and prompt service with fair prices. The river has been protected for over 100 years.
As you paddle away, just remember that the explorers went this was in the 1680's. Perfectly preserved for generations. You can see why U.S. Presidents chose Cedar Island as a retreat.

Everything about the river itself was great. However, our experience with the outfitters was not. Their customer service was very poor.

The Brule has something for everyone who enjoys canoes. You can take the upper Brule from Stone's bridge to Winnebajoe which is easy, no real rapids, lots of wildlife (we've seen bear, bald eagles, been within 1 foot of myriad beaver, mink, seen ubiquitous deer and been very close to, but thankfully never made visual contact with timber wolf packs. This is easy and slow and peaceful. The lower Brule (actually its more northern since the Brule runs north to south is lots of fairly easy white water and then has the Ledges. The Ledge are a series of two to three foot drops in roiling white water that happen one after another. It is fabulous fun! Don't go on this part of the Brule unless you know how to paddle pretty well and are completely prepared to get wet. The entire Brule has fantastic flora and scenry. Later in the season, portions of the banks are replaced by wild salmonberries. These are gigantic raspberry like berries that have a different but wonderful taste. You can pick a peck in about 30 seconds.

Great choice for a canoe trip and better, to my taste than either the Namakogon or the Saint Croix. Both of these are National Scenic Waterways and gorgeous, but I'd choose the Brule and I've been on all of them many many times.

PS - take some bug juice/ the canoe outfitter in Brule WI is excellent

The Bois Brule is a very beautiful river, and well worth seeing. The Brule River Canoe Rental should be your last resort for doing so, however. The staff is either apathetic or surly, and usually shows up for pick-up 30 minutes late, with no explanation or apology. Price is high. Equipment is OK. Next time, we'll rent a canoe from UMD and bring a car and a bike to do our own pickup.
