“So Impressed!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 March 2014

I am so incredibly impressed with this motel! The room is very clean and cozy and the bathroom has been remodeled recently. The water pressure in the shower is amazing! The owner has been very warm and accommodating. When I told her we would be in late she offered to leave the room open for us and let us pay in the morning. She even had the heater on and light on for us! I am so happy we chose the Wagon Wheel!

The Wagon Wheel in Alturas only has a half dozen rooms, but they are comfortable, roomy, and clean. We had two queen beds and there was plenty of room around them for tables, a recliner, a small desk and a small closet. The rooms sit back from the highway about 150 feet, and are quiet. In front, along the highway frontage is a small diner offering generous meals of the meat and potato variety. Breakfast was generous and the staff was very friendly. This place was recommended by a couple of other motels which were full, and we were not disappointed.

The motel is very nice. The rooms are practically new and very clean. The bed was very comfortable. The price was a very good value. The Wagon Wheel restaurant at the front of the property serves a tasty, traditional American menu.

Have stopped both on the way to and back from Burning Man. Nothing fancy, but nice, quiet, and clean rooms at a reasonable price. Convenient restaurant at front of property that has good food at reasonable price.

I know it sounds like an old song but you truly can’t judge a book by its cover. This Motel is a perfect example of this. To drive by the motel it looks like the standard terrible old place to stay. But they have completely remodeled the rooms. They are quiet clean and comfortable. Also the price I paid was well worth it. I have never checked in to a hotel of any kind so fast, checkout was super easy too. The restaurant in front of the hotel serves great food for a fair price. If you are in the Alturas Area and are planning A hotel stay this place is great!

I totally agree with the other reviewers: my one-night stay was very nice and also very expensive. Room was large, clean, and comfortable. I had dinner and breakfast at the adjoining restaurant, also inexpensive and good quality. No problems with noise, wireless worked fine, and staff was friendly. My dogs seemed welcome. Will stay there again this year on my way through town.

"Are you sure about this?" I asked my husband as we pulled up along side this motel. We needed to stay over night in Alturas and in looking at Trip Advisor reviews had settled on Wagon Wheel.

So, while Wagon Wheel would not get a four star rating from us were it in some larger town, in the context of Alturas we are fans. The setting is quiet, convenient to the downtown area (such as it is for Alturas), the rates are low (we paid $50) for nice big rooms and the best part is everything is absolutely, spotlessly, sparkling clean.

Beds were comfy enough, if a little soft for our taste. Decor was of the era of the building...which is several decades old...but all nice and fresh for bedding and carpeting that seemed new. Refrigerator, microwave and coffee pot in the room as well as good TV reception.

When you make a reservation you are told to pick up the keys at the Wagon Wheel Cafe adjacent to the Motel. When we ate at the cafe for a good breakfast at the restaurant the next morning we told the owner (who was waiting tables) what a delightful surprise it was to find them and we had learned of them via reviews at an internet site. She says she hears that a lot and needed to learn how to log on to the internet to look at the information herself!

One final note, we are increasingly aware of accessibility these days and while this is tagged this as wheelchair accessible it is not. For these reasons: there is about a 4" step up to the room (although there is apparently a portable ramp available at the restaurant to take to the room if needed) and the bathroom sink and toilet are not ADA compliant (although clear floor space in and door opening to the bathroom are good). There is no accessible shower...although if one can stand and shower using grab bars those are provided. People with mobility limits who use canes or walkers would find this useful, people who use a wheelchair but are able to stand independently would find this useful, but our friends who rely on wheelchairs full time would not find this met their needs. Just a heads up if that also describes your situation.
