“Disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 December 2013

I only gave it a two because it does have a very convenient access to one of the parks, but what a mess this hotel is! Called customer service to let them know that the bag was arriving from the airport, they put us on hold for 30 minutes. The staff is either unhelpful or not knowledgable. The overall feel is very impersonal. Also, they keep on asking me if I'm a guest at the hotel and then check it just to give me some information about the area, meanwhile, it does not look like anybody knows who is coming in or out of the hotel. With so many children it is simply unsafe! We travel a lot and at this price range this hotel/vacation is simply disappointing. WIll not be returning to this hotel

We stayed here in early-December for the second time. Yes, it is expensive but the convenience is more than worth it. My grandson got sick and we were able to immediately return to our room while the rest of the family could continue enjoying Disneyland. Had we been staying at a hotel outside the grounds, this would not have been possible and the entire family would have missed out. The hotel also has a nurse on duty 24/7 and sent her to check on our grandson. We really appreciated their care and concern and we were not charged one dime for this service! It was also necessary to change the linens a number of times and Housekeeping was always right there to take care of it without complaint or additional charge. I don't believe we would have had this level of service at another hotel.

Also had dinner at the Storyteller Café which was wonderful. My daughter-in-law is a vegan and the chef came to our table to ask what she might like prepared. He then fixed a lovely meal just for her! And they have a "make your own" pizza the kids loved. They got to pick toppings and assemble the pizza which was then whisked away to the oven.

We also used Whitewater Snacks a number of times. They had many reasonably-priced selections and wonderful fruit plates which we took to our room.

Just spent Christmas in this hotel with family and required five rooms for six days. Very expensive, but Christmas!...at Disneyland!..about what we expected. The hotel did a very good job and we were pleased with the stay. The rooms are a little dated, especially the bathrooms, but they were clean, well supplied, and very functional. Very good beds. Good internet service. The benefit for the family of being steps away from the parks is outstanding! The magic morning hour where you have exclusive use of the parks is extremely beneficial.
The staff were very friendly and accommodating at a very hectic time of year. They managed to have all our rooms on the same floor, within steps of each other. Having one suite provided us with a living room for group get-togethers...that worked very well. Would recommend you make good use of the in-room mini-fridges for drinks and snacks.
Here is my only caution (and one complaint): With a large group at Christmas, we pre-booked all of our dining reservations as recommended. In every restaurant that was Disney owned we had a good experience, expensive but above average food and above average service. All reservations were honored and more or less on time. One dinner reservation was at Naples Restaurante in Downtown Disney and was made through Disney DIning. This was a disaster! They advised us they are not owned by Disney and therefore don't have to honor the reservation. Group of 14 waited about an hour plus on Christmas eve for a table with no service in sight. Finally left without being served...nice! Would highly recommend that Disney Dining only handle Disney facilities.
Overall, had a wonderful holiday visit and Disney provided a great venue at decent value. Would recommend but at this cost, this is not an every year trip.

This was the first hotel of my family's American holiday and was the ideal place to stay to truly experience Disneyland in full flight. We were greeted with a "welcome home" from Jennifer at the front desk and relaxed in the beautiful Lobby as our room was being cleaned.

Although the rooms were reasonably small and expensive, they were perfect for our family (the type who liked to spend all of the day in the park). The various restaurants and cafes were also handy. I loved the easy access to California Adventure Park, which is not guaranteed with all of the Disneyland hotels.

I certainly recommend this Hotel, providing that you spend most of your time exploring, rather than relaxing...

Room Tip: Plan in advance and ensure you have pre-purchased tickets to the various lands

I don't mind paying the price
if the service and rooms were up to par but the rooms are a joke. I find it absolutely rude to put a family in a box for 700.00 a night. Rooms are drab and feel like you're staying in a Marriott, yes the foyer nice but its a facade once you enter the room you'll be extremely disappointed. Walt Disney would turn over in his grave that this hotel is charging 5x more than it cost to enter his gate calling themselves Disney and taking complete advantage of families all based on location. There is nothing magical about this hotel except for the entry way. Don't stay here its a sham. There are many nice hotels in the area with rooms much nicer and larger for half the price. Furthermore the reviews are paid writers of the hotel, its so very obvious. I travel extensivly and there is no way charging this much for such a crappy room would make any family happy.

Of all the hotels next to Disneyland with early access to the park and within walking distance, this is the best. Rooms were clean and comfortable and the kids loved the bunkbed. The pool area however is extremely crowded and it is tough to get a seat at certain times of the day.

We had originally booked a non-Disney hotel near Disneyland but when we arrived we realized that transportation to/from the park would be more of a hassle than we had expected. So, at dinner in Downtown Disney - we decided to see if we could get into the Grand Californian - oh, and did I mention our stay included Christmas Day. Well, our incredible experience started as we were checking if they had a last minute availability. Will at the front desk was incredibly friendly and helpful. He found us a good room with minimum hassle and also made a special Happy Birthday button for my wife (it was her birthday the next day).

The room - just a standard 2 queen bed - was very nice. The entire hotel, including the room, was decorated with a mountain lodge feel - just like it was taken directly from the California mountains. The door to the room and the bathroom were heavy solid wood doors - nothing cheap here. There were double sinks which is always a plus. The beds were comfortable and the room was well arranged. Even though our room was looking over the front entrance (but on the top floor), we never heard any noise from the front drive. Actually, we were never really bothered with noise. Overall a very comfortable room. BTW, look for the "hidden mickey" in the carpet.

The location is GREAT for a visit to Disney. There is an entrance to Disney's California Adventure directly from the hotel - great for "Magic Morning" when DCA opens 1 hour early for hotel guests. It is also right off Downtown Disney which has a good selections of restaurants. Finally, it is only a short walk to the entrance to Disneyland. Basically, you can't get any closer.

The pool area is also very nice. There are 3 pools - including a kid's pool with water slides; 1 baby pool and 2 hot tubs - one of which was very large. The chaise lounges are also very nice with thick cushions. It was very enjoyable sitting by the pool in the afternoon.

We didn't eat at any of the restaurants on the property but we did try room service. The menu could be better but the food wasn't too bad.

I should mention staying at the Grand Californian is not cheap but we definitely felt it was worth it and made the trip really great. If we return to Disneyland, the Grand Californian will be where we stay (but we will make a reservation this time :-)).
