“Excellent location for Disney Parks & Downtown Disney”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

As kids, our family would drive to Disney early in the morning, spend for parking, navigate through the parking building/lot (don't forget where you parked!) then walk what felt like miles to our short legs, just to get to the shuttles for a quick ride, then line up with hordes of other kids at the gate till we were FINALLY inside the happiest place on earth.

What a difference from our last Disney experience in the Grand Californian Hotel!

Here, we woke up, had a leisurely breakfast, lounged around till the park opened, strolled through the hotel grounds and entered the park through our own private little entrance. After lunch, we even went back to the hotel for a short nap, before heading back out, well-rested for a second round of fun. Needless to say, going home after an exhausting day was easy-breezy: no tram ride, far walks or car-searching hassles.

Downtown Disney is right outside and there are plenty of restaurants with a 5-minute drive for other dining options. If you've forgotten to bring anything (sunscreen, towels, etc.), there are several Walmart-type stores in the area as well.

The hotel itself was understated, nothing too flashy or overly park-themed. It was comfortable and clean, but it also wasn't exceptionally out of the ordinary considering how much they charge per night. However, service was great and all the staff members we encountered were friendly and helpful. Wi-fi speed varied, but was choppy most of the time.

The pool with the slide has a very strong current, so make sure your kids are confident swimmers if they want to try it. The lifeguard on duty said that he'd had to dive in on several occasions due to kids panicking once they reach the bottom of the slide. My 6 and 8 year old were fine though and got a kick out of swimming with and against the current. The other 2 pools were nice and relaxing. Afternoons and evenings get very crowded.

I would definitely come back if I was going to the Disney parks simply because the convenience can't be beat. However, if you are in the area mostly for other theme parks and sightseeing, you can find better options for the price.

Went with our 5-year-old granddaughter, with focus on Disney, so it was important to make getting there as easy as possible. This was where the hotel shone. Out the door and straight into the California Park, and a short walk to Disneyland, or alternatively a short walk through Downtown Disney to Disneyland. However, we ended up renting a stroller for the 5 days we were there as Disneyland was so hot and crowded. We rented, which was more expensive than buying, for what we thought would be convenience. What no one told us was that you could not take the stroller into Downtown Disney or the hotel, which meant a roundabout route through the parks to get back to the hotel, where you had to leave the stroller at the entrance and collect a new stroller at Disneyland the next day, and bring it back through the other park again to collect the child. Rules that were definitely not child-friendly! When our granddaughter fell asleep in the stroller after a late night of fireworks, we were lucky because the security person at the hotel gate offered to walk us back to our room so we did not need to wake her up. He was an exception - the other people we encountered in variations of that situation were only interested in enforcing the rules, not with trying to help. The child-size rocking chairs in the lobby where kids could watch cartoons while you checked in or out were a nice touch. Rooms, as many reviews have noted, were nothing special. Ours had two queens and was large enough, but there were only three drawers, which seemed skimpy. There was a noisy drip in the sink. We had to call two days in a row for maintenance, and when the maintenance people finally came, they said there was nothing to be done and that this was a problem throughout the hotel. We had a view of the park, which meant we were practically on top of the roller coaster. As long as the balcony door was shut tight, there was no noise from the park though. View was beautiful at night when the park is lit up. Pool was fine for our purposes, and we enjoyed the water slides, but does not compare to most resorts. Staff were pleasant, but there almost seemed to be too many, with people standing around chatting to each other or standing there looking bored. NB: early opening at this time of year is 7 a.m. With a young child who has stayed up late at night to see fireworks or the 2 wonderful light/water shows, this didn't work for us.

Upon check in I humbly suggest that you check your CNN channel - if it's channel 38 you have a new TV and if it's Channel 57 and grainy you have an old TV in need of replacement.

I request a quiet room because I am up working at 5am for the next 2 days and sleep is kind of crucial. The request was for a quiet room away from ice machines and elevators where I checked into a guestroom room closest and directly next to the elevators. It surprisingly took another 30 more minutes to finally find another guestroom that was quiet and this while experiencing their VIP check in service where a staff member interrupts the check in process because they need access assistance.

Finally checked in and wanted to watch some CNN to get caught up on current affairs. CNN was on Channel 57 and was impossible to watch as this and many other TV analog channels are grainy and hard to watch on my guestroom TV.

More than an hour and a half of my evening has been needlessly wasted as three very fine & hard working hotel maintenance staff had to swap out my heavy ten year old television for one that can play CNN and other analog channels clearly.

Right after the guestroom television replacement is completed – as a courtesy - I call 'Alisa' the hotel’s evening duty manager. I ask if she knows about the television problem. Even after sharing my story she categorically advises that there is no such TV problem, does not offer an apology and further tells me that she will deal directly with the maintenance team for telling me what they did. How disappointing a hotel leadership response as the maintenance team were amazingly helpful and told me the following:

1. Disney leadership assumed that all of their current televisions would self-program when doing a Direct TV upgrade about four months ago. Only 300 + of the newer guestroom TV’s were able to self-program. The switch over happened just before a huge national football game and caused many problems!

2. The remaining 600 + older TV’s being ten years old like mine were sadly discovered to not be able to self- program. Further that for analog channels like CNN to play clear the 10 year old TV need to be replaced as analog channels like CNN and many others play grainy and not watchable.

I was told that little or nothing will be done until the next renovation happens sometime next year because the current rooms have not been renovated in fourteen years – this as told to me by their hardworking maintenance staff.

I appreciate and greatly value TripAdvisor as the proactive public forum where any traveller can share and expose the realities of any current stay experience.

Top marks to the maintenance team for being so helpful and too bad about the disappointing Duty Manager response received.

As also advised by maintenance tonight, the last renovation was fourteen years ago. My room therefore is surprisingly in good shape for such a non renovation period. It is one of those guestrooms that can connect through 2 doors to a hospitality suite.

Now you know . . . . happy travels.

Room Tip: ask for rooms away from the park as they are noisy and check your CNN channel - if it's channel...

Great hotel. Wake up hit park no buses, no driving. Close to both parks and Downtown Disney. Stay here and enjoy the hotel. Napa Rose is a great restaurant. If use to Florida you will not be "welcomed homed" as you are in Florida. Have three pools and pool near the Bar which is a plus. Have a couple of nice grills in back to grill a steak can't be best.

This place is amazing! After getting off a 14hr flight, the staff were very friendly and happy for us to check in early. Just a short walk into Downtown Disney, Disneyland and California Adventure Park. A little more expensive than other hotels around but your paying for location.
Having limited time (7n), we felt it was important to stay as close as possible to Disneyland.
Staying at the Grand, every morning we were able to get into a park early (magic morning).
Doing our laundry here only cost us a few dollars. Pleasantly surprised!
We would definitely recommend staying at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel.

The lobby is breathtaking. The location is superior. The rooms are acceptable although a bit dated. This is a rambling hotel with a lot of people everywhere. It seems they have overbuilt the infrastructure and built too many rooms in a bit of a rambling maze. The valet service stinks. We had to wait 20 minutes to obtain our car. The drive in was chaotic dodging Disney workers who did not seem to know what they were doing. The VIP service inside the hotel was superior and very helpful. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would return. We especially enjoyed the evening fireworks from our third story location overlooking Disneyland.

Room Tip: Room on a higher with a view of the Disneyland fireworks is a must.
