“Still has some bugs to work out”
Reviewed 7 August 2008

This is the 2nd hotel in what is intended to be a chain of eco-friendly hotels. When we stayed there (June 8,9) the hotel had only been open for about 4 weeks. They probably opened too soon, the developer admitted. The restaurant was still under construction; the laundry facilities (at that time the web site promised laundry facilities)weren't open, painters were still working, the smoke detector in the room was still covered in plastic wrap, there was nothing in the room explaining room features or providing help#s., etc.

We stayed in a suite with a king bedroom. The sitting area was attractively furnished, in a clean, modern look. Green and earth colors promote the "eco" theme. The bathroom was too dark, and the light switch immediately inside the bathroom door turned on a light out in the bedroom. The room "keys" are made of stiff cardboard (eco again) but bend easily if stuck into a pocket. You can feel environmentally sensitive knowing all the materials are recycled or eco-friendly. I wouldn't call this a "resort" myself ... it's right off the 5 Freeway, and there are no extensive grounds to enjoy. It's just a nice, basic hotel.

The staff is extremely friendly and helpful, and when I sent a note about the various issues to the hotel developer, I got a call from the manager within a few hours (I'd been out) and an email frm the developer. They were grateful for the criticism and suggestions and fixed what was fixable at the time. They certainly seem committed to their vision of building environmentally sensitive hotels. Plants are low water use and often native; they hope to eventually use the remaining pecan trees on the property in pies in the restaurant.

This location seems fine if you have activities nearby but not as a destination on its own. Shasta is about an hour or so away; Lassen National Park is about 1.5 hours away. Anderson sees temperatures above 100 routinely in the summer.

The GAIA Anderson is a real gem, a brand new facility located right off I-5 on the north end of Anderson (just a few miles from Shasta Lake recreation areas). This is a brand new hotel with conference center, very nicely landscaped, with a restaurant on site (we didn't try it). There were even swans swimming in the ponds. The rooms were much larger than average, the beds were very comfortable, the bathroom was spacious and very clean, and we very much enjoyed the flat screen TV and free wireless internet. An organic continental breakfast was provided free of charge in the lobby and the pastries were first class.

My husband and I stayed overnight on our way back from So Cal. to Vancouver, WA. I found about this new hotel on their web site. No reviews had yet been written, but it had just opened in April and were pet friendly and the price was right, so I figured we couldn't go wrong. The reception area was very nice and clean. We were given a key a told the room was in the "A" section of the 2 story hotel and told to park around the side of the hotel. We started driving on what we thought was the road to the parking lot, only to find out that we were on some sort of walking path. Also, we noticed that there were sliding glass doors to the rooms facing us with no rooms numbers indicating where we were. We drove back to the front and went through a passageway to the interior courtyard to find the front door of our room. Very confusing! I don't know who the architect was on the building but it is really weird. The rooms are all in circle facing each other with the back sliding glass doors facing the exterior. Also, we had this lovely little patio outside our back door, however, the neighbors (6 men smoking cigars and drinking beer on their patio) 2 rooms down decided to use it repeatedly as their pathway to their cars for the evening until my husband asked them to use the walking path instead of constantly standing on and walking across our patio and usually looking in at us each time. My husband finally asked them to stop using our patio as their pathway, however they still did, so we closed our drapes. The lighting in the room was dim, so after driving 600 miles, I would have preferred to leave the drapes open and relax, instead of being in a dimly lit room. Something should be done to create privacy for each patio area. The room itself was very nice. Very comfortable bed, their was no outside noise that affected us, the linens were very good quality. My husband has been a commercial builder for 35 years, and noticed alot of bad construction issues, like cracked concrete and strange placement of things. It seems like this hotel is trying very hard to be top quality, but maybe they ran short of money? They really need to make it easy for people to identify where the rooms and parking are, as we saw about 10 other people driving down the same walking path we did and turn around. Overall, it worked fine for a one night stay. When we went looking for a place to eat in Anderson, we found the town to be very depressed and didn't offer much in the way of food. Redding is definately more upscale.
