“Everything was great except the air conditioning”
Reviewed 28 July 2014

We sweated all night due to an air conditioner that never got cold. The bed and pillows were too firm also. The sleeping experience was not good. Everything else was perfect. The dinner was great as was the breakfast. Great service also, and the building is beautiful.

We stayed here one night with our two adult sons while travelling home to Arizona. Overall it was pretty good, but somewhat below expectations based on other Embassy suites. First, check in was very slow. I'm not sure what was the issue because there were only a couple of parties in line ahead of us. Also, the lobby and common area were quite warm when we arrived. In fairness, it was over 100 degrees outside and the A/C system may not have been designed for that. Thankfully, the room was comfortable so it wasn't really an issue. The room itself is nice and big. The extra sink / mirror in the bedroom is very helpful. We love having two TVs so different members of the family can watch different shows at the same time. We were a bit disappointed the TV did not seem to work with our portable DVD player. The free WiFi worked well. The workout center has free weights and cardio equipment. We really like the location of this hotel near numerous dining options, many within walking distance. The included breakfast is a nice bonus we look forward to when staying at Embassy Suites. Our omelettes were a bit undercooked but the other food was good. The common area is very relaxing, with its waterfall and koi pond. Overall, it is a nice hotel which could become a great hotel with a few improvements.

Upon entering the hotel, we were greeted by a wave of humid chlorinated air reminiscent of the smell and air quality you might encounter when attending a meet in a high school swimming pool. The source of this unique and pervasive odor seems to be a combination of poor ventilation for the indoor pool and malfunctioning A/C in the large lobby / open area typical of this brand of hotel. We checked in and quickly left for dinner and to visit some friends in the area motivated by a desire to allow the A/C in our fairly hot room to kick in and cool the room down and hopefully bring the humidity in the room down to a reasonable level.

Upon returning to the room after again swimming not through the water in the pool but rather through the really not good smelling humid air in the lobby, we found that the A/C in the room was barely functioning. Several calls to the front desk went unanswered to ask about the A/C and request a couple of extra pillows (the pillows supplied had the approximate mass and structure of cotton candy - puffy but no substance and became wafer thin when any amount of pressure was applied). When I finally reached the front desk I was told that they were completely out of pillows and also extra blankets. Thank goodness for the broken A/C as we clearly had no need of any kind of blankets whatsoever so used the blankets already in the room to supplement the wafer-pillows.

I have stayed at a number of other properties in this brand and generally find them a good place for family travel. The unpleasant indoors and thick air in the common areas, the beat up and warped furniture in the room, the broken A/C and the limited supply of really terrible pillows at this location will send me looking for another place to stay the next time I'm in this area.

Oh - and least I forget, should you find yourself in this property, don't plan on having anyone that likes the dark sleep in the front room of the suite as the drapes that cover the windows into the hall are hung such that a 1/2" strip on the sides of the two large front windows isn't covered and allows both light and Peeping Toms an entry point to the room. Also, be prepared to meet your neighbors or at least hear the details of their conversations as the walls seem to have approximately the same substance as the pillows.

Room Tip: Don't stay in a room facing the road or above the pool. P.S. All rooms apparently either fac...

Dear Alan,

Thank you for staying with us at our hotel. I appreciate your honesty; we look for reviews to provide insight into our hotel and we apologize for the smell you encountered in the lobby. We have freshened the lobby with new air freshener fans.

As the summer is one of our busiest months, there is no excuse for us not to have suitable pillows for you and your family. Our concrete walls usually don't bleed noise to our neighboring suites, perhaps there may have been people mingling outside of your suite? As for the black out curtains in the parlor, we will make sure maintenance is aware of your suite number and have them check the way that they are hung as it is not typical for people to be able to see into the suites.

Our hotel will soon be going through a renovation in which we receive new soft seating in the suites. I realize that you have a sour taste in your mouth for our hotel, but hope that you might try it again if you are ever in our area.

Thank You for your review - Naomi

Our family took a trip to Los Angeles, and we needed a suite- we have outgrown double bed rooms! All suites were sold out near LA, so we stayed at the Embassy Suites in Arcadia. Great service, convenient to have the complimentary breakfast. Room was quiet and clean. It is a little far from our LA destinations (Getty, Griffith Park) but otherwise suited our needs.

We stay here when making the drive with the kids between SF and Phoenix. It's a solid hotel, but can be noisy when fully committed due to the layout of the rooms around the courtyard/dining area. The noise echos up the courtyard. Would probably be better with a corner, ground floor or very high room, but I haven't tested that theory yet (we were on 5th floor and it was awful with a group laughing and talking loudly downstairs.)

My family and I stayed at the hotel for a family reunion. The hotel felt like a vacation and was beautiful inside and out. The staff were awesome, kind, and helpful. My only problem was with the hideaway bed in the couch. The mattress was very uncomfortable. I wouldn't even let my children sleep on it. Otherwise, a great experience.

Suites are nicely furnished, very spacious. "Cooked to order" breakfast was very good with an ample selection. A dramatic-looking lobby with plants, running water. Very good value. The hotel has facilities for large groups; there were two large family reunion groups when we stayed there, also a wedding group. The hotel can accommodate all these activities without seemed crowded.
