“Eclectic little hotel in heart of Arcata”

It is located right on the square and surrounded by Bars so street noise is an issue. Also, if you do not like roving bands of hippies, then my advice is avoid Arcata in general. Hotel was build in 1915 and they did manage to maintain a lot of that feel while providing some modern conveniences like flat screen TV. Old Radiators for heat are charming, however you cannot control the temperature in an individual room. Old single pain windows that actually open add tot he charm of the hotel but do a poor job at keeping out the noise form the street. Original wood doors with real keys also a nice touch.

I liked the place, however it is not for everyone.

Room Tip: I noise is a problem for you, stay somewhere else.

The location of the Hotel Arcata is very convenient, but go some place else if you want to sleep! The view over the square and the quick access to just about anything in Arcata is very convenient. The noise level in and around the hotel is horrific.....noisy doors, noisy hallways, no sound barrier between rooms, and noisy people on the street, especially at the bar next door. I've rarely seen as many homeless people in one place at one time as I did during our stay at the hotel. We did have a large, two-room suite with two baths, but that can't make up for the noise generated by the bar patrons, homeless folks and young people going in and out of the hotel. The breakfast is minimal...don't count on that being very good or nourishing. They didn't even have any decaf coffee! There is no parking at the hotel, though they provide a parking tag (worth $25 we were quickly told), and you have to do battle with everyone else to find a parking place.

Room Tip: Do not stay at this hotel. Look elsewhere for lodging!

The Hotel Arcata got an extra point for me because it is pet-friendly and the front-desk people were nice, but otherwise it has little to recommend it. Tired décor and mattresses, paper thin walls, persistent scent of marijuana wafting into the hallways and into the room, windows of suite look out onto ugly outside walls and roof, noisy door-slamming neighbors, and sad town plaza with too many nearby bars and assertive drunk patrons. Is too bad, as the hotel and town square have a lot of potential. I would not choose again.

The Hotel is historic and located on the northeast corner of the town plaza in the center of which is a park in which there is a statue of President William McKinley. Businesses including restaurants, boutiques and coffeehouses are located on the four sides of the plaza. Coffee, tea, fresh fruit and muffins are cheerfully provided every morning in the lobby of the hotel. The rooms vary in decor and size. To ensure a quiet, uninterrupted night of sleep,it is best to avoid a room located on the front side of the hotel.

Room Tip: Higher floor rooms are more desirable

What a sad, former gem of a historic place. At first it seems nice that it faces out to the town plaza, but then you find out that the plaza is ground zero for all the homeless and the druggies that Arcata seems to be a magnet for. Never in all my travels have I seen that many of them! the other unfortunate fact is that there are three or four grimy bars right next door, and those patrons do not care how much noise they are making. they spill out onto the sidewalk for a smoke, and can't resist the chance to hoot, holler and exchange obscenities. when I came back to the car from checking in, my wife had locked herself in because some of them were determined to have a chat with her. They also have no parking available, so you get to park on the streets, and hope you don't get broken into. we were aware of the small rooms there, so we tried to resolve it by reserving a "plaza room", where you have a small living room and a king size bed in the bedroom. the problem is that puts you directly above one of the bars! since there was no AC in the room, I opened windows, and immediately had the pleasure of sharing the cigarette smoke from all those friendly bar patrons out on the sidewalk. There are no large rooms at the back of the hotel, so the idea of moving back there was not an option, and we chose to leave after the first night. the only positive point we can make about this place is that the sushi restaurant they have there is absolutely top quality!!

Room Tip: ask for a room in the back of the building, (which will be tiny) or go somewhere else!

I love old buildings of historical merit and so was excited to stay at Hotel Arcata for my North Coast adventures. The exterior and common areas were nice and showed reasonable care and maintenance. The small lobby, halls and stairwells had a 1890s vibe and were pleasant in their uniqueness. When I checked in the lone desk clerk was friendly but scatterbrained and I wondered if she had just visited a local cannabis clinic.

However the room is where this old hotel falls down. Costing $99 with AAA discount, I got a tiny and rustic room with zero historical charm, falling far short of similar era hotels I stayed at in Port Townsend WA and Victoria BC. Ugly decor, horrid shower and a view of an ugly side street made for a forgettable stay. In fairness, Hotel Arcata doesn't claim to be a resort or luxury hotel and provides the basics in the middle of Old Town Arcata, near to the the university and freeway exit to the National Redwood Park 20 minutes down the highway.

The plaza was cute but filled with homeless and druggies, adding to the sour notes of the rooms. Street only parking but the front gives you a city pass for free parking anymore but on the plaza.

We usually stay in Trinidad when we visit the north coast, but everything was booked this particular weekend. I like quirky hotels with historical character, which this one definitely does have. But the charm ends after the 1st night.

The hotel was built in the late 1800's and I get the fact that rooms were small then and other features might be different. But, certain basic things can be upgraded without changing the overall character of the hotel. The carpet in the room is pretty filthy (the hall carpeting was fine). But more importantly..the bed was absolutely THE MOST BRUTALLY UNCOMFORTABLE mattress I've ever slept on! My 14 yr. old daughter woke up with painful collarbones from sleeping on her stomach and I was in agony from my neck to my mid back. We could literally feel every coil and spring. If you bring your own foam pad it would probably be OK.

The bathroom was nice with a small claw foot tub/shower..lots of hot water and nice fluffy towels. The hotel is located on the lively plaza in downtown Arcata and is close to several bars. Our room was located in the rear of the building so we didn't hear any bar noise, but we did get a birds eye view of the vagrants getting drunk in the alley.

There is a "continental breakfast" offered. The coffee was very good. The selections are meager: sugary Cost-co muffins, apples and bananas. Just the addition of cereal and instant oatmeal would be a big improvement. Hopefully the manager will consider such an upgrade? The Japanese restaurant located in the hotel lobby is delicious and definitely worth a visit.

For the price we paid during the two nights we stayed, I must say I was very disappointed - not a good value at all and the horrible bed made my weekend difficult. I didn't get the impression that the staff really cared if the guest was comfortable or not. I would not recommend staying at the Hotel Arcata...there are other options around.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the rear of the hotel away from the bar noise next door and out front. Bring ear p...
