Better than expected. We are Mexican food lovers - my husband is hispanic and grew up on it - so very particular. We were surprised to find the food so good. Highly recommend.

We stopped at El Vaquero after visiting the nearby Calaveras Big Trees State Park. It was a Saturday night (summertime) and this restaurant was extremely busy from when we arrived about 7pm until we left at 8:30pm. Everyone on the staff was very nice, from the person who seated us, to our server Monica, to the bus-people who helped in the meantime. We both got a Chile Colorado platter, and were pleased to be served large portions of beef in red sauce that was delicious. My partner asked the house-made hot sauce, which was the hottest he had ever had, and was very good. (A little bit goes a long ways!) If you like hot sauce don't miss it. The meal was very reasonably priced, and the flan we had for dessert was the best we have ever eaten, and we love flan. The patrons of the restaurant were also very pleasant and everyone in there seemed to be having a wonderful time. We enjoyed the atmosphere. While we dined inside, there was also an outside patio seating area which was very popular. We ordered colas and they were a very nice size as well as refillable. We definitely plan to return to this restaurant the next time we're in the area. The staff is efficient and hard-working.

We ended up eating here more than anywhere else the week we stayed there. The menu was diverse and the food was good. The staff was awesome and friendly.

We had dinner there after a long absence and some lingering questions about the service and food. However, once we arrived, greeted and seated, we were immediately served with chips and salsa and an order for drinks taken. Both of our meals were well prepared, delicious and plentiful. The only comment was that they were a little light on zest which was easily overcome by adding some salsa to the food. We ate outside and before doing so I would suggest that you see if there is a table with some shade coverage. The sun can be both hot and in your face although most of the tables have umbrellas to provide some relief. There is also a slight distraction with the Hwy 4 noise that is within a short distance from the deck, but this is only a minor issue since the outside view is very appealing.

We enjoyed dinner at El Vaquero last night with a Mexican friend, and no doubt it is Authentic! The tortilla soup was perfectly picante and delicious. Our friend had the shrimp….rice, beans and salad, oh yum! and Don Memo….his regular chile rellenos and enchiladas. Really good and fast service, but nice chips and salsas while we waited… They also serve good lunches, and I recommend it for a group outing. The breakfast menu includes machaca. By the way, we know Mexican food because we live in La Paz Baja Ca Sur for half the year, and this one is the best Mexican restaurant in Calaveras County!
