“Awesome place to stay”
Reviewed 6 July 2011

This is our first trip to the Arnold area. The Black Bear Inn was picked from the excellent reviews. We are extremely happy with our choice. The room is tastefully decorated and very clean. The garden has beautiful landscape. Both the afternoon wine/snack and the morning breakfast are impeccably served. The friendly owners provided us with many useful local sightseeing tips that made our trip especially enjoyable. The inn is definitely a top-notch B & B. It is within a short drive to the Big Tree State Park and Lake Alpine. We certainly would stay here again when we return to this area.

The closeness to Calaveras Big Trees brought us to this wonderful B&B. In the evenings we were served cheese with an excellent local wine (complimentary). After a good nights sleep we had a delicious breakfast (different every day) and a friendly relaxed chat with Bruce & Wendi who whenever we needed helped us in every way during our stay. Bruce & Wendi have feeling for hospitality. We highly recommend staying with them.

My husband and I went to celebrate our birthdays. The Innkeepers, Wendi and Bruce were very helpful. They made our trip so relaxing. The evening wine and cheese was wonderful after a day of sight seeing at Calaveras Big Trees State Park. Also the breakfast on the patio was amazing. Great food with wonderful presentation. We enjoyed the 4th of July parade, arts and craft faire and evening bbq and concert. Was great to see Bruce and Wendi there too. They pay such attention to detail, and are so warm and friendly. Thank you so much. P.S. Loved the hot tub!

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms! All have great views.

The trees, lawn and building are beautiful and well cared for. Our room was large and comfortable and opened onto a green lawn + seating. We didn't get to use the hot tub but will next time!
Bruce and Wendi are very, very friendly and generous in all the little things. We arrived in time for a wine and cheese/charcuterie/fruit plate out on the patio and Wendi came out and poured more wine for us after we'd unwound and sat enjoying the tall trees that surround the property. If you hike you'll love the trailhead behind their place which leads down into National Forest. We went on a terrific hike after enjoying Chef Bruce's amazing breakfast...a nut coated French Toast with maple syrup and fruit on the side.
It 's an easy drive from the Black Bear Inn to Calaveras Big Trees State Park which was the reason we came. It's also an easy drive down to Murphys for wine tasting.
A romantic getaway!

My husband and I were fortunate to stay at the Arnold Black Bear Inn for 5 nights. Our hosts, Wendi and Bruce, were personable and professional. We would definitely come back and encourage our friends and family to experience this wonderful Inn!

The Calaveras Room...
We stayed in the Calaveras room which is at the end of the hallway and the largest room in the bed and breakfast. The room was tastefully decorated and comfortable during our stay. The bed had a tempurpedic top with plush pillows in which we would watch shows on the flat screen tucked in the corner of the room. The bathroom was amazing! The walk in shower was huge it could fit a dozen people! The french doors next to the bed opened up to the manicured grounds. The room was clean and the service to clean and provide supplies to the room was excellent.

The food...
The breakfasts were made from scratch and were scrumptious. The french toasts and pancakes had natural flavoring that you did not need syrup. The breakfasts were so great that you did not want to add anything to them for taste. The portions were large and kept us full past lunch time. We were fortunate to have dinner at the Inn and my husband and I could not describe how delicious, wonderful, and artistic the food was. We had a customized menu with our names that outlined the appetizer, main entree, and dessert served for dinner.

The area, shops, and services...
The Inn is in close proximity to restaurants, gas stations, parks. Bruce was extremely helpful in providing us fishing locations and tips through his own personal experience and by calling up the local sporting goods (Ebbett's Pass Sporting Goods) for current fishing conditions. Also, Bruce and Wendi provided recommendations on places to eat for lunch and dinner. I even got a referral to a massage therapist who was able to relieve my aches and pains since I am over 5 months pregnant. The massage therapist had a small office that was in walking distance from the Inn and could even come to your room if you wished. We even walked across the street to the stained glass and wood shop which had incredible pieces of artwork. We bought several items from this high quality establishment.

Fishing...
There is fishing nearby at the White Pines Lake and at the North Stanislaus river. There are other fishing 15-30 minutes away at other towns such as Angel's Creek. We were able to catch beautiful trout, however, it took us a while since the waters were running high and fast. Visit Ebbett's Sporting Goods for the best places to fish.

We loved our stay at the Arnold Black Bear Inn. Wendi and Bruce were so sweet and their B&B is adorable! And, the wine/cheese and breakfast they serve is delicious. The only thing we were sad about is that we didn't schedule to have dinner there. We will definitely be planning another trip to the Black Bear Inn soon.
