I have friends living in the area, and two favorite wineries, so The Carlton is where I always stay because I am so well cared for. The staff is fantastic. The hotel itself is very quiet and peaceful. The rooms are luxurious, wonderfully clean, and well appointed. The bed (I was in Room 325) is the most comfortable I've ever found anywhere (and I have travelled extensively on business). The rooms have an LAN connection for much faster internet access.

Don't be disappointed when you first walk in - as the entry to the hotel is less than luxurious, but the rooms are great. Perfectly comfortable beds with nice linens, and great, large luxury bathrooms with high-end Turkish cotton towels. Perfectly nice for a one-night stayover. Kind of strange that the bath amenities were all different brands - different soap than shampoo, than conditioner and lotion, etc. Almost as if they were using whatever they could find! Didn't see the continental breakfast that was on the website either upon checkout - but we were in a rush and there was only 1 person at the desk so we headed down the road to find breakfast since the restaurant in the hotel is now closed and "available for lease." No pool, no extras - but nice rooms and easy access to the 101. Staff could use a little training with "class" issues. Front desk personnel should be dressed professionally for $250 per night charges, and either give guests a couple of bottles of water to drink or don't -- but handtyped stickers taped to Fiji water bottles saying "$4 per bottle" seemed a little tacky. Would stay again if in the area and unable to find a cute B&B.

Room Tip: Request a room on the 2nd floor that opens up to the nice outside tables on the roof where you can e...

This is in an old building downtown in Atascadero built in 1928. The room was large and comfortable. The bed was good. Bathroom was large. The restaurant was not open when we were there. We were looking for a drink in the evening, but there is a nice wine bar next door.

My only complaint was that we had no wifi reception in the room. We were probably far from the source. I could only get 2 bars on my cell service, so I could not establish a good hotspot.

Great for a short stay! Very clean and love the historic feel. Does not feel old or have the old smell just the great feel. Loved the fact that you can walk anywhere. It is located right in between SLO and Paso so if you need to go to both its perfect. Shower and whirlpool bath in the standard room. Under new ownership and has been impeccably restored and I would stay there again anytime.

Room Tip: Inner rooms are quiet but the view on outer are better.

We just returned home from a trip to Atascadero and the Paso Robles area and spent five nights at the Carlton Hotel. This historic and impeccably restored hotel is the pride of Atascadero, as is its newly renovated, domed city hall.

NOTHING else in town comes close to preserving what must have been a grand property in its heyday. This is the anchor property to what is a nice, little town trying to grow up and mirror the successful downtown redevelopments that have occurred in Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo.

The front desk was very ably staffed at all times. More than helpful and friendly. Given the apparent full occupancy over the weekend the Carlton Hotel is a good choice for many other travelers also. All of the assistance and advice we sought out were provided in a friendly and professional manner and everything was exactly as advertised.

Our room was larger than average, reasonably priced and nicely appointed.

My only regret was that the highly touted restaurant on site has closed and its glorious space is awaiting someone to step in and re-open.

We were able to walk around the entire downtown area safely and confidently day and night and there is a budding revitalization in progress in the downtown core that should only enhance both the Carlton and Atascadero itself in the future.

Not as hip and gentrified as Paso Robles or SLO, but a very nice, comfortable place to spend some time after taking in the area's main draw which is the vineyards.

There are some good "eating" options nearby and we found the location ideal for exploring the entire area. I say "eating" not as an indictment, but as a compliment to the city's decent and tasty restaurants that aren't trying to be the next "hipster, foodie" haven. They just serve good food with plenty of variety to those who live and visit there without all the pretension and expense of others in the area.

Atascadero is just 20 minutes to the coast and Morro Bay. It was pretty hot a few days and we actually took a break and went to the coast a couple of times during our stay.

Beds and pillows were very comfortable. Large rooms and large & nice bathroom. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Gave good restaurant advice, and sights to see in the area.

Good location for day visits to Hearst Castle, Paso Robles, and everything in the area.
