“Can't wait to return”
Reviewed 2 July 2008

My husband and I chose to visit Catalina for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. The Hotel Vista del Mar was not our first choice, however, they were the only ones who had a vacancy on the dates we needed. We booked a room with a courtyard view, which I was disappointed with at the time because I wanted an ocean view. When we arrived, we were very pleasantly suprised. We were greeted as though we were old friends by the desk staff. The open air lobby offered a spectacular view of all of Catalina, and the courtyard is indescribable with hanging flowers and plants, large potted plants and trees lined the walkway, and wicker chairs throughout to lend a place of rest. Our room was immaculate, and a complimentary bottle of champagne was waiting for us in our room. The bed was plush and comfortable, the fireplace was the perfect touch, and the wicker chair and loveseat were perfect for relaxing after a long day of sightseeing and shopping. Each evening they served warm cookies and milk in the lobby. On the evening that we celebrated our anniversary, (in the restaurant just below the lobby called Steve's Steakhouse - the place to go for a wonderful elegant meal) we knew that we would not be back in time to enjoy the cookies and milk so we asked if they could place some in our room for us to enjoy later in the evening, and sure enough, when we returned to our room, there they were, warm and delicious. We arrived several hours prior to check in and on our day of departure our boat left hours after check out and they graciously offered to keep our bags secured in a locked room until we needed them. If you choose to book this hotel and they say they only have a couryard view, don't hesitate because, although, it isn't an ocean view, it is just gorgeous. The staff was kind and courteous, always ready to offer their assitance. I would say that the ONLY drawback to this hotel is that they are on the third floor with no elevator. But this would be the drawback at many of the hotels on the island because we visited several while we were there to find we had to climb flights of stairs every where we went. In visiting some of the other hotels, my husband and I have decided that Hotel Vista del Mar will be our choice for future visits. Thank you for helping us to celebrate our 25th Anniversary with memories to cherish for years to come.

  • Liked — The wonderful rooms and the fabulous view. Location is central to everything.

Avalon, Catalina, California
Vista del Mar - June 2008
This is 6th time we have stayed at the Vista del Mar in the heart of Avalon. It is a small, cozy B&B just overlooking the Green Pier in Avalon Harbor with a view of the famous Casino. This hotel has the best location in town. It is on the 3rd floor of the building and the open air "lobby" overlooks the harbor. You can walk to and from everything there is to do and see in town. It is a 10 minute walk from the dock where the ferry leaves you if you arrive by boat. One of the island's best restaurants, Steve's Steakhouse is on the second floor below the hotel.

The rooms are all off of a inner hallway that is lit by skylights. Lovely plants line the hallway. The rooms are cozy and large enough for a bed and couch and chairs. Most have a fireplace. They are well appointed and have a wet bar and small refrigerator. The bath tub is a jacuzzi tub. There are two small suites in the front of the hotel with balconies overlooking the boardwalk and the harbor. We stayed in one once and the only problem with those rooms is that the noise from the street can be very loud, especially at night.

The staff is very friendly. The breakfast is very carb-loaded--just bagels, cereal, some sweets, juice and coffee. But there are lots of great small cafes nearby, including several waffle and pancake places.

The only thing you really need to know about the Vista del Mar is that is up 2 steep, narrow staircases and they have no elevator. We had to lug our own suitcases up to our rooms. Be warned if you are not able to life them yourself.

But it is really nice to sit on the open air balcony and watch the boats come and go. Avalon is a great substitute for a trip to the Italian or French coasts. There's lots to do and see, including kayaking, biking, horseback riding, environmental tours and many boating tours. There are some great restaurants, including Steve's, the Villa Portofino and the Catalina Country Club, which is open to all.

I'm sure we will be back a 7th time and more.

We could not of asked for a better place to celebrate our anniversary. The hotel is located in the middle of everything.
The staff was courteous, friendly and helpful with making reservations for dinner and activities.
The room was immaculate; we enjoyed the in-room hot tub and the fireplace but mostly the private balcony and the amazing view.
We would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a short but very special stay and we plan on going back ourselves in the future.

My husband and I just stayed here for our anniversary and had a wonderful time. The location was perfect, the room clean and nice and the staff knowledgeable and friendly. There were a few flies in the outdoor hallway, but really, there are flies all over the island. It's just apart of being outdoors. The outdoor hallway is very unique and beautiful, and the continental breakfast is an added bonus providing a nice snack before heading to get a big breakfast in a restaurant. The provided breakfast is enjoyable, but there are so many amazing places to get breakfast that you shouldn't miss out on, like Antonio's (get the macadamian nut and coconut syrup french toast -wow!) besides in my world everything is about breakfast so I can eat is all day anyway. The other thing I would mention is the fresh bakes cookies and milk they provide before bed, totally cool:)

I recently attended a wedding in Orange County, CA and had a couple of extra days to check out Santa Catalina Island just 22 miles off the coast of LA. Based primarily on comments on TripAdvisor, my wife and I settled on staying at the Hotel Vista Del Mar. Once I received confirmation we were scheduled to stay in Room 103, I was a bit worried based on a customer review on TripAdvisor in March 2006. Hopeful that the problem had since been addressed, we decided to stay at the hotel and it was an enjoyable visit.
Centrally located to restaurants and shops on the island, the hotel boasted a great view only steps from the beach. The room was well appointed with a king sized bed (quite comfortable bedding), a small bar area with mini-fridge stocked with snacks, and a nice gas fireplace to set the mood. The bathroom amenities (lotion, soap, shampoo, etc.) were of nice quality and 2 bath robes were provided. The room was spacious and very quiet despite being 10 steps from the main desk. A small continental breakfast and evening cookies and milk were offered, but busy with enjoying the island we passed on both. Though only there 2 days and 1 night, the stay was an enjoyable one, very comfortable.
To be slightly critical about a few items, the lobby and guestrooms of the hotel are located on the third floor of the building with only 2 sets of spanish tiled stairs for access and egress. Not a problem for us, but older visitors or travelers with heavy baggage might find access inconvenient. Also, upon arrival, the hotel may have been under-staffed as we had to wait some time (10-15 min) for a front desk attendant to check us in. Granted we arrived several hours before scheduled check in, but it was a little inconvenient. We we allowed to store our luggage securely, however, while our room was being serviced from a previous guest. Continuing with the room, it was well appointed and very clean though the bathroom was a bit dated. Also, for the price of the hotel stay, the towels could have been of higher quality to match the excellent bedding.
To end on a good note though, the staff was cordial, the room very comfortable, the location was perfect, and the view was spectacular. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend this hotel to other visitors.

The Hotel Vista del Mar is conveniently located right on Catalina's Avalon shoreline, about 5 minutes from where the Express ferry drops off passengers. From its third floor balcony it has a gorgeous view of Avalon harbor. However, a swarm of flies continuously make themselves at home during the sunlight hours right in the middle of the lobby mitigating the pleasure of hanging out there. There are a limited number of rooms available and we stayed at a Deluxe Room. It was cozy and comfortable and not enough can be said about the luxuriousness of having a fireplace operated with the flick of a switch right at the foot of the bed. On the slightly chilly first day we arrived, it was a godsend for getting the toasty back into our feet! Everything is extremely clean including the bathroom. However, the bathroom is very small and tight for two people to use at the same time and it is also somewhat old-fashioned. The great free toiletries offered are not only nicely proportioned to last a good week but they are from Gilchrist & Soames, a great plus! The front desk was not staffed very well during ordinary operating hours which made checking in and out and asking for information somewhat frustrating. Overall a nice stay but they could improve on some counts.

  • Liked — The fireplace in the room which turns on at the flick of a swicth
  • Disliked — The swarm of flies constantly hovering around the middle of the lobby
