We wound up staying at the Hotel Catalina because the hotel we usually stay at while in Catalina was booked for the dates we were planning to visit. We needed to make a very last minute change to our reservation and the hotel was very accommodating. But that was really the last good thing I can write about here.
This is an old hotel on the island and it certainly shows its age. While understanding and accepting that hotels on Catalina are not expected to be the Ritz Carlton, my family and I certainly expect a certain level of cleanliness and service.
To begin, we rented a Cottage (Cottage D to be specific) and it was pretty small. The Room has a double bed and a pull out futon. Do not fool yourself if you are looking at the floorplans on their website, this cottage is really small and the futon is not suitable for sleeping. I had to sleep on the futon because a double is not big enough for my wife and I and my back is still reminding me about it. Daughter & wife slept in the double bed. After checking in, we discovered we had no running cold water (hot only) and had to request maintenance service. While they did restore the cold water, the toilet never stopped running so the only way to stop listening to it continuously filling the bowl was to turn off the water at night. The room had obvious cleanliness issues (see pictures) and I was glad we were only there one night. Hair dryer is in the closet. TV had nothing but fuzzy pictures on all channels (I just try to keep up on the news/sports in the morning). Electrical box is protruding from the wall in the closet for dryer plug. That isn't safe and is likely some type of code violation. The huge cat fight in the pool area in the middle of the night was the icing on the cake. (Literally cats fighting, the island is loaded with feral cats.)
Not recommended at all. There are many other options. We have stayed at the Metropole and Pavilion and if either are available, those are highly recommended. The old saying is you get what you pay for and I'm sorry to say you don't get much value here. You can save a few bucks here but the added costs (taxi to boat dock, etc) not to mention the cleanliness issues don't make this a real value. I would not stay here again.
The staff is not exactly friendly. We requested the hotel shuttle back to the boat dock only to find out the shuttle drivers take lunch at that time (really?). What kind of service is that?
