Hotel Catalina

We wound up staying at the Hotel Catalina because the hotel we usually stay at while in Catalina was booked for the dates we were planning to visit. We needed to make a very last minute change to our reservation and the hotel was very accommodating. But that was really the last good thing I can write about here.

This is an old hotel on the island and it certainly shows its age. While understanding and accepting that hotels on Catalina are not expected to be the Ritz Carlton, my family and I certainly expect a certain level of cleanliness and service.

To begin, we rented a Cottage (Cottage D to be specific) and it was pretty small. The Room has a double bed and a pull out futon. Do not fool yourself if you are looking at the floorplans on their website, this cottage is really small and the futon is not suitable for sleeping. I had to sleep on the futon because a double is not big enough for my wife and I and my back is still reminding me about it. Daughter & wife slept in the double bed. After checking in, we discovered we had no running cold water (hot only) and had to request maintenance service. While they did restore the cold water, the toilet never stopped running so the only way to stop listening to it continuously filling the bowl was to turn off the water at night. The room had obvious cleanliness issues (see pictures) and I was glad we were only there one night. Hair dryer is in the closet. TV had nothing but fuzzy pictures on all channels (I just try to keep up on the news/sports in the morning). Electrical box is protruding from the wall in the closet for dryer plug. That isn't safe and is likely some type of code violation. The huge cat fight in the pool area in the middle of the night was the icing on the cake. (Literally cats fighting, the island is loaded with feral cats.)

Not recommended at all. There are many other options. We have stayed at the Metropole and Pavilion and if either are available, those are highly recommended. The old saying is you get what you pay for and I'm sorry to say you don't get much value here. You can save a few bucks here but the added costs (taxi to boat dock, etc) not to mention the cleanliness issues don't make this a real value. I would not stay here again.

The staff is not exactly friendly. We requested the hotel shuttle back to the boat dock only to find out the shuttle drivers take lunch at that time (really?). What kind of service is that?

We just spent 3 nights at the Hotel Catalina for the Fourth of July weekend 2014.

PROs
Hotel is conveniently located directly off of Front Street and you are minutes away from the beach, harbor and all the restaurants on Front Street. Our room was cleaned on a timely basis and fresh towels were provided on a daily basis. Housekeeping is very honest! We left a tip for the housekeeping and found the money still on the night stand when we came back. Hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. Currently, they are running a promotion by providing a discount on the Catalina Express if you make reservations at the Hotel Catalina.

CONs
Since the moment of our arrival, we all noticed that our room had a very weird smell. The odor was very strong in our room and no amount of airing out could get rid of it. It seemed like it was a combination of Raid insecticide and old building (?). We had a room on the first floor and since it was Fourth of July weekend, all the rooms were booked and we couldn't switch. The pervasive odor made it hard to relax in this room. This is a very basic hotel for the budget conscious. It is a very old building and our room was small. It looked tired and dilapidated. The carpet felt old and dirty and should be replaced. The bathroom, although clean, was microscopic! I haven't seen a bathroom this small since I've been in Europe. For a family of four (2 adults & 2 small children), the bathroom was a tight squeeze. The breakfast consisted of donuts, watered down guava juice and weak coffee.

If you like bright, modern, spacious and clean hotels, this place is not for you. You are better off spending more money on another hotel. I tend to be extremely selective when it comes to hotels which is why my husband booked this place without my consultation.

The Hotel Catalina is a well-run, well-maintained hotel in the heart of Avalon. The original hotel building provides a more quaint classic island experience with smaller rooms and older furnishings and fixtures. The 'Courtyard Annex' building a couple doors down the street provides a more varied selection of more spacious rooms including three upscale suites that have panoramic views of the harbor. Traveling with family we took one of the ocean view annex suites plus a regular room in the main hotel for overflow so had a taste of both facilities. The suite was fabulous with full kitchen, recently redone bathrooms and lots of room to spread out, relax and enjoy the view. Staff was courteous, helpful and unobtrusive.

Room Tip: Annex rooms are updated and more spacious while main hotel building rooms offer a more quaint atmosp...

This was one of the last hotels with a room available at a decent price. Although rooms are extremely tiny and outdated it was quite quaint. Within walking distance to nearly everything is was very convenient. The only downside was the hallways were always filled with clutter from the rooms being serviced. There was always a vacuum and at least one bag of trash right outside out door the entire stay. My husband and I went to use the hot tub and it was not very hot at all. It was actually colder than the air temperature was on a chilly night. If you are looking for a bargain, this is the place to stay. If you are looking for a more upscale or nicer hotel I would recommend looking at another location.

Room Tip: The rooms on the east side have a great view of sunrise if you are in a room south of the staircase.

Hotel Catalina is one of the most amazing little getaway one could ever ask for. The friendly staff that were helping us ( Nancy and Hilda ) were always smiling, professional and very informative. We were greeted every morning with hot coffee and fresh pastries. The hotel gives you a very calm and homely feeling. The room was immaculate and very well maintained. This was obvious by its owner's own personal touch. At night, you can enjoy a fabulous ocean view under the stars with a glass of your favorite wine by sitting out on their very spacious and comfortable balcony. Thanks for a wonderful stay, we will be back again soon...!!!!!! Dean and Zeppy

Room Tip: all rooms are well decorated and very clean.
