My boyfriend surprised me for my birthday by planning a trip to Catalina. This was my first time there and have to say it was an awesome experience. After reading the reviews on here we were a little worried but were extremely pleased by this great hotel. We stayed in the Capri Suite and LOVED it. There is a beautiful marble bathroom with a steeping tub and glass shower. The fireplace in the room made it extra cozy. The staff was very friendly. The continental breakfast was bit limited but other than that we'd stay here again! Oh...the view from our balcony was amazing too!

We stayed for 2 nights and had 2 suites (which were big w/ balconies) and 2 rooms, which were average. The hotel is located way over on the Westside of town, a good walk from the ferries. If you are planning on staying you better have a good pair of legs, as there are lots of stairs to climb. Especially if you want to use the balcony/porch area, which has tables and chairs as well as several confortable chaise lounges.
As for the room, it is a regular type of room, with a small sleeping area taken up by mostly a queen size bed. Unfortunately, the room I stayed in, #207, had a little of the mold smell, especially after a shower was taken. We kept the fan on for some time after and it wasn't too bad.
Hotel is within easy walking distance of Descanso Beach, as well as all the bars and restaurants of Avalon.

My husband, 10 yr old son and I go to Catalina each year for a weekend to visit our daughter at Sea Camp. This year I was not on the ball and forgot to book our room quickly enough. Called every nice hotel in town to discover they were all full. Got stuck with a $250 a night motel room at the HVP. It was a little dark cave right off the main enterance (courtyard?) with a view of the stairwell and the managers bike. EVERYONE had to pass by our room. It was loud at all hours of the day. Especially between 10 and 11pm when all the drunks were returning after dinner out.

The beds were like slabs of stone with flat, dead hard pillows. My son decided to sleep on the small couch instead of the bed. He said it was more comfortable. Bathroom was tiny. All in all this room should have been less than a $100, even by Avalon standards.

Do not stay in one of the SMALL rooms if you book this hotel. We had no choice and would have gladly spent double just to get a roomier, quiet room.

Next year I WILL book another hotel room somewhere else.

I stayed here for one night on May 10th. We went to Catalina to get engaged. We reserved the Miramare suite. The room was large by Catalina standards. The bathroom was clean and done in beautiful marble. We had an amazing view from our balcony of the harbor. The staff was wonderful; when they found out that we just got engaged, we returned to find a bottle of champagne and a congratulatory card in our room. I have stayed at many other places in Catalina, and I love this place. The only noise we heard at night was when our neighbors returned and sat on their balcony. You should expect some noise though; you cannot stay that close to the beach, where all the bars are located, and not here some noise. However, if you put on the a/c or heat, you don't hear a thing. I highly recommend the Villa Portofino if you are looking for a nice, romantic place to stay.

When we first checked into the hotel, we couldn't say enough about the excellent location, cute decor, charming courtyards and fantastic view from the sun deck. The flattery ended once we tried to get some rest. The walls are paper thin. You can hear conversations, TVs, walking around and pretty much any other type of noise from the rooms on each side and above & below. That certainly is the down-fall of this hotel.

Overall a decent stay but we'll probably try another hotel on our next visit.

First, the negatives... it is true that the rooms aren't large (even the suites), the sheets and towels aren't very soft, and the noise is an issue. However, if you put yourself in a European frame of mind you'll find that it doesn't really matter. My husband & I loved the charm of the place. The decor is nice, the views beautiful, and I loved the fact that you didn't have to go through a hotel lobby to get to your room. And that they use real keys! The staff was pleasant, the restaurant quaint... We definitely enjoyed our stay and had a romantic weekend here.

We stayed at this hotel for our Honeymoon from Oct.18-Oct.21. I should've listened to the previous review about how loud this place is. We had the suite up front, it had a great view and was overall pretty comfortable, BUT...the trash trucks arrive at 6:30am not 9am(not kidding), every day. We're early risers, but that was ridiculous. The hotel is located on the "truck route", which they don't mention(of course, why would they)and the golf carts start going up the hill shortly after the trash comes at 6:30am. Understandably, this is a seaport town, they rise early and shut down early- but the hotel should've mentioned that. It is true that the staff is very non-chalante about the noise, they SHOULD pass out ear plugs! The room was pretty clean, the bathroom was probably the high point. And the balconys were nice but they are not private. Overall, our stay was average, there are many issues that need to be addressed, especially about the trash truck; and the staff needs to be more responsive to their guests.
