If you fly into Airport in the Sky as we did or take the bus up there to eat and see the interior, get yourself a snack and a drink at the DC-3. We were the only people there while we waited for the bus....and a Piper Seneca doesn't carry too many. The folks there (and up in the control tower were very friendly. Aside from some coffee and some snacks for the kids, you can also get some good souvenirs. It can be cold in the morning, so a polar is nice and they have some cool t-shirts.
While you are there, you can walk out and see the soapstone quarry down the hill ( some of the half carved soapstone bowls are still visible - they were valuable because you could cook in them and they wouldn't break....) The folks at the cafe pointed this out to us and said they wouldn't let the bus leave without us! You can also walk down to the west end of the runway and look down toward Shark Bay, a great view.
By the way, the cookies are really good. When we came back up for our flight back to Cali, our pilot said the reason there was a chopper with its blade turning was that one of the crew members was picking up a box of cookies.
The ride up and back is worth it. Some people ride up to the airport on the bus and then walk down to Avalon (10 miles of widing road down hill and you will surely see a buffalo over by the lake and picnic area....)
