We had the opportunity to experience touring Catalina Island on a 1952 vintage bus. Although it was a bit dicey at the beginning of the tour going up the steep inclines, narrow and winding roads, the 3 hour tour was fun tand he sights were breathtaking. Our guide/driver, Freddie, was constantly talking for the entire tour with most of the conversation being puns and one-liners. We stopped and saw bald eagles, bison, and the airport at the top of the summit was a single building with an airstrip. This is where we stopped for a quick snack and bathroom break. This tour is long, but interesting. We think it was the best way to see all the sights on the island.

Freddie was very knowledgeable about the island's history and he was quite entertaining.

This was a good tour, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're only on the island for the day. There is a lot of driving, although you are rewarded with some great views and close-ups of the island's bison. We also saw one of the native island foxes. One of the drivers apparently feeds this one, and he was just sitting by a tree and was not bothered by our bus stopping. The driver was informative and I would recommend this if you are there for a few days.
However, a BIG negative was the supposed food stop at the airport. We were told at the ticket booth that we would have half an hour to eat, that this was plenty of time, and they recommended the burgers. When we arrived, there was a long line already. There was a "bus tour" menu posted that didn't include burgers or anything grilled. Then, to top it off, they announced that they couldn't serve our group any food (no explanation). Very disappointing, as we hadn't had lunch before getting on the bus:(

This was a looong bus ride. Although our guide was very informative and tried to crack jokes along the way, my interest was lost after 30 minutes. It would have been a nice tour for the very elderly or those families with very young babies because not much walking was required. But, for others, one may find it too boring to just sit inside a bus and listen to the guide while the scenery passes you. We made two stops. One to see a tiny caged area with bald eagle/hawks that were injured and rescued (cool idea but in reality kind of sad looking). Another was the Airport in the Sky (a bathroom stop for us).

It's hard to really appreciate the beauty of Catalina from inside the bus...wished that they would allow more meaningful stops along the way.

We had the pleasure of going on the Inland Expedition with Cindy Lowe as our guide. She was very knowledgeable about the island as well as very funny. Her interaction with the group was great and made the 3 1/2 hour trip so much more enjoyable. We got to see at least 4 bison and then the herd up on the mountain. The Eagles were great. The airport and winery were lovely as was many of the fabulous views we had as the day we went was an incredibly beautiful day. We highly recommend taking the tour and hopefully you will be lucky and get Cindy as your tour guide!

We booked this 3-hour tour because we wanted to see the 31 miles of Catalina's rugged interior.

Our bus driver/tour guide was great and very informative in providing lots of information on the island's history, living and working conditions and overall economics of the island.

We did make stops along the way at Middle Ranch, where they have a Native Plant Nursery, and the Catalina Island Fox habitat, although we were not able to see any. Our journey then took us to the the beautiful windward backside of the Island for a view of Catalina's rugged, unspoiled Pacific shoreline. Also included was the Airport in the Sky, which is an amazing little airport. Be sure to check out the gift shop/cafe, where they sell delicious monster cookies.

It was a very nice tour and I would definitely recommend it to others.
